I am thinking, maybe the Leafs can convince the Pens to swap Brandon Sutter for Lupul.

The Leafs may need to sweeten the deal a slight bit, a 2nd or 3rd round pick or something, even a prospect too, but Lupul is locked up long term, can score, and would be a nice winger fit for the Pens looking for a top 6 winger after losing Neal and Jokinen and Stempniak.

They traded for Spaling, re-signed Goc and Dupuis returns from injury. They have centre depth or guys who can fill that 3rd line role.

The Leafs, while not the deepest on the wing after JVR and Kessel, they need a 3rd line centre and Sutter is the exact centre they’d need. Good size, a strong defensive presence who can add some O.

I think its “easier” to find a replacement winger than it is for them to fill that centre slot. Whatever it may take, I’d do it.

I believe contractually, Lupul will earn more than Sutter. i think that is why i believe the Leafs would have to give up slightly more.

Maybe Biggs, a 3rd and Lupul for Sutter. Is that overpay? Maybe, but i personally think it would be worth it.

If Franson was almost traded for Gorges, and Gorges eventually went for a late 2nd round pick, i’d have to think Franson is worth similar. And it looks like he’ll probably command a salary of 2.5 mil, give or take him going to Arbitration.

Reimer, hard to see any other team who’d need him than Winnipeg. I think he’d be worth too an early enough draft pick. Much like how Lindback went for a 2nd (though he didnt amount to much despite the promise) or when the Blues moved Bishop (another late blooming goalie). Its just bc the demand is nowhere near the supply the value goes down. I am still thinking though the Leafs look at those two previous goalie deals and think, something along those lines of a return is what they’d want for Reimer.

So glad McClement, Kulemin and Gunnarson are gone. All soft useless players.

    • Gambo says:

McClement was a God in Toronto in his first season. I would’ve taken him back for 1m easy. Just play him 4th line and PK time like he was meant to. Not 20 fucking minutes. But I get it, culture change.

What are the chances Gauthier is the 4th line center next season?

      • toronto77 says:

I really hate inserting players into a role in the line up that they were not brought in to do. Gauthier with his great 2 way game will be a top 6 centre men. If he is going to be a top 6 then do not play him until he is ready to be a top 6, don’t put him on the 4th line. Players that will be nothing better then bottom 6 players should be put in that role. for example Broll will only be a bottom 6 forward and that is where he will play when he is ready.

Also, when the leafs played Rielly last season he played at worst as the 4th d-man, he was never 5th-7th.

Pretty sure this is why Gorges refused Toronto

Pretty humiliating, I never looked at Gorges the same after that fight.

    • Gambo says:

Haha I was thinking that too. His interview afterwards was the bitchiest interview I’ve ever seen. Such a whiner.

    • toronto77 says:

THANK YOU!!! I never even wanted Georges! He is a whiner, probably the biggest one in the league. I hate players that bring attention to the team off the ice. The leafs were really tough that season, hope we get it back.

From the Isles, Kulemin gets $16.75 million over four years!!!

$16 million dollars just to score less than 10 goals and play soft.

Sports is the racket to get into if you have mediocre talent and can blend in.

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

They’re overpaid but it works for NYI because they always carry so much cap anyway.

Look at the players this off season Florida, NJ, NYI, Dallas, Calgary, Edmonton, St.Louis, Vancouver, Buffalo, Colorado, Minnesota, even CBJ last year… this aren’t major markets.

These should be a problem for a league where big markets get punished all the while paying into revenue sharing.

  5. Gambo says:

So are the Islanders going to move Strome? Tavares and Grabo locked up as their top 2 centers..

Will be interesting to see how Grabo and Kuli do.

    • nordiques100 says:

there are more rumors of them trying to move Bailey for defence help. But they’re saying the price is super high.

He for all intents and purposes is a bust IMO. he is a useful player, size, speed but production is poor for a top 10 pick.

He should have never played in NHL as an 18 year old. Perhaps this is what they are doing with Strome, bringing him along slower.

Leafs apparently sign Petri Kontiola from Finland who played in KHL the last few years.

He was a teammate of Leo Komarov in the Finnish National Team

  7. TmLeafan says:

One of the Leafs biggest problems last season was that none of their forwards were good at defense. Nonis has shaken things up I like it. Couple of Fins in Komarov and Kontiola, these guys are tough to play against and good defensively. Frattin is a good skater, lays the body and a good contract. Bodie is solid in his own end and fast.

I wonder if Santorelli is any good defensively. Have a few Canucks fans say hes really good. If he plays with good offensive players he will put up numbers.
