Future Planning

On Wednesday morning’s edition of Blue Breakfast on TSN Radio 1050, NHL Insider Darren Dreger spoke about the Toronto Maple Leafs as the NHL trade deadline approaches.

While the market appears to be calm right now as selling teams wait to see if the prices go up for players, Dreger discusses what the Leafs might have to give up as they try to land a difference maker.

“If Burke is going to make an impactful deal, then he’s going to have to give away potential, and that’s Nazem Kadri, Luke Schenn, players like that,” Dreger said. “Otherwise, you’re tinkering.”http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=386040

The Liles signing gives us 7Dmen with the team, add in AUlie, Holzer(who mngmt has a hard on for), Blacker, Percy and one or two are bye bye see you…IMO…I think it is gonna be Schenn, he is the peice that could centre the biggest deal.

Niittymaki placed on waivers. Not a huge surprise. May not get claimed unless they place him on re-entry waivers. Though T-bay and the Sens could really use a decent backup. His numbers weren't terrible in his first stint with TB, but nothing to write home about. 2 mil this year, UFA next, so not a huge commitment to a team that might pick him up; less than 1mill left to pay out this year.

So for the 4 teams tied with 55 points, Toronto is the only one with more goals than goals against.  They are +4 while Washington is -1, Florida is -14, New Jersey is -7… And Ottawa is -3(had to include them).

Just throwing out some blue and white positivity!

  4. LeafsFTW17 says:

Oh and Ottawa is 3 games ahead and only ahead by 5 points.  Boys, I really think we're making the playoffs this year.  There is no doubt in my mind that the Leafs are better than the Panthers and Sens..

  5. Steven_Leafs says:

we should make it but the Leafs need to win the important games. Can you imagine if the Leafs had won that Sens game or even the Habs game a little while ago? I get the feeling the Leafs will finish 9th due to a tiebreaker. That being said, I think the Leafs should make the playoffs. Florida and Ottawa seem to be declining and we have to take advantage of that.

What do you guys think of jeff carter? At first I wasn't sold at all but I've been thinking about it a bit. He wouldn't be our first line center purely because I can't see him gelling with kessel and lupul – too much shoot first for one line. That said, I don't really see Carter as a true #1 C anyways but he's definitely a bonafied 2C or 1B. I was reading some stuff on hfboards and someone said they thought kadri could gel well with carter which I 100% agree with.

If the asking price wasn't too ridiculous what do you guys think? His stock has surely dropped a bit, but I can't see howsen moving him for much less than he got him for, just doesn't make sense.. I feel if we didn't have to move too, too much he could be a sweet addition. Still be in the hunt for the 1C but in the mean time.
    Lupul       –         Bozak      – Kessel
    Kulemin   –         Carter      – Kadri
    Macarthur – Connolly/Grabo – Armstrong
    Lombardi –         Steckel     – Brown
I'm ok with that for the time being.. Probably have to remove one of the forwards from the trade (anyone but the obvious + kulie imo), a defenceman and a prospect. Overall though that forward core is pretty deep. And who knows, maybe carter has chemistry with kessel/lupul after all.

Not sure if Burke would be into how long his contract is but I think that lineup is just a big gritty first line center away from being seriously competitive. Grit, flash and scoring on every line. Now getting the big gritty center could prove difficult, but hey maybe getzlaf hits free agency in a couple summers lol.

  8. blaze says:

From a purely player standpoint sure Carter would look great in a Leafs uni. That contract however would not, and I feelquite confident Burke feels even more strongly than myself on that issue.

  9. mapleleafsfan says:

His contract really isn't too awful… The term stinks sure, but cap wise at 5.27 million it's completely manageable. Only NTC for a couple years too, so you could always dump him if he sucks mid 30s to a team that needs to meet the cap (when he drops to 3 or 2 million). Or just bury him in the minors later.

Having another player of kessels skill on the 2nd line could be real nice. Kulie to grind, kadri to play make and Carter to finish… I like it.

Ya, were not in bad shape at all at the all-star break. Let's put it this way – it would be really heart breaking to miss the playoffs this year. I'm expecting us to make it.

Also, I was looking at that stat too (I mean that we have 3 games in hand on Ottawa and are 5 pts back), so essentially we control our own fate.
Anyone know off hand how many games we have left against the Sens? These are crucial games. Also no more 3+ game losing streaks would go a long way.
  11. NonLeafFansAreGay says:

Put Armstrong on the 4th and Lombardi on the 3rd.

  12. dumbassdoorman says:

For all those who love to slam Burke and talk about what a self centred ego maniac he is, his players love him……The first day at camp, after (general manager) Brian Burke had spoken to the team, I called my agent (Joel Resnick) and said, ‘I’d go through a wall for this guy’.” , siad Liles after signing his salary reduced extention in TO.

  13. blaze says:

Burke definitely has a players GM rep, a useful thing.

  14. dumbassdoorman says:

    YIP, I couldn't agree more….too bad Wilson didn't have the same rep….lol

  15. leafmeister says:

If we got Carter, I would like to put him on another line than Kessel and Lupul to spread out the offense, but I think that they could mesh.

I think the idea that Kessel is a pure goal scorer is a misconception. He is a shoot first player, and given his shot I wouldnt have it any other way, but the guy can also set up plays like a mother*****er. He may not have the best vision, but when he hits the blueline with speed he opens up so much room for Lupul. Throw Carter into the mix and you could have Kessel gaining the line, and if he doesnt have a shot, setting up Carter (whose shot is just as good), all while Lupul drives the net looking for a rebound or a tip.
Plus the contract is long, but seeing some of the contracts thrown around for high end goal scorers is 5.2 million really so bad?
  16. JoelLeafs says:

I dunno, big risk for what he brings and the contract. Yeah, he was good in philly, but he had all kinds of weapons around him and they played a loose run-and-gun style. I think he was over-valued and PHI was good to move him when they did. I'd be bummed out if he came to TO.

Maybe if CLB had signed him for a mil or so more per year MTL would have traded for him.

  17. JoelLeafs says:

Why the ***** is Burke so damn high on Wilson? Seriously, is he seeing something I'm not? He acts like he's the end all and be all of coaching. I'd give Wilson a C+/B- since coming to TO. Yeah, he's media savvy, but hasn't produced much in the way of improvement considering all the players that have been thrown his way. Ugh.

  18. dumbassdoorman says:

Burkes biggest problem as a GM IMO, is that he is loyal to a fault. So add that to him and Wilson being buddies, BAMMM, there is your problem. I think he is giving Wilson too many chances to succeed based on a friendship.

  19. Steven_Leafs says:

yeah if we can avoid everything you said then we will be in great shape. That is the challenge isn't it? 😛

  20. blaze says:

Probably, but I feel like Burke would be more loyal than than most GMs to any coach, unless he truly believed it was time to move on.
