Leafs Re-sign Staffan Kronwall

John Ferguson, vice-president and general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Thursday that the club has re-signed defenceman Staffan Kronwall to a two-year contract extension.

Kronwall, 24, began the 2006-07 season with the Maple Leafs, but was assigned to the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL) on November 14. He played 47 games for the Marlies, collecting 17 points (3 goals, 14 assists) with 32 penalty minutes. Following the conclusion of the AHL regular season he was named the Marlies ‘Best Defenceman.’

The native of Jarfalla, Sweden split the 2005-06 season between the Maple Leafs and the Marlies. Kronwall made his NHL debut with the Maple Leafs on October 29, 2005 versus the Ottawa Senators, eventually playing 34 games and registering one assist for the parent club. He was Toronto’s ninth choice, 285th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft.

McCabe, Kaberle, Kubina, Gill, Coli, White were the D core last season. It would be they're 2nd year as a complete group

  2. mojo19 says:

Joseph can't teach young goalie's anything. His style is unique to people with outstanding reflexes. He plays way too far back in his net which makes him look great on saves on the cross ice passes. But makes him look bad when a shot he gets a big piece of falls in behind him. Puck handling he's the worst, positional he's very unorathodox and old school, not the style they teach anymore at all.

  3. mojo19 says:

If we were able to get Ryan Smyth somehow that would be great:

    Smyth – Sundin – Tucker
    Poni – Wellwood – Antropov
    Stajan – Peca – Steen
    Kilger – Pohl – Devereux

If not, rearange shit and throw in Battaglia.

  4. 92-93 says:

i would give you that your top two lines are more realistic, but that's no fun, and i wouldnt say it should be preferred.

the Smyth signing – or Hartnell or Kariya for that matter – could be a long-term signing, with Smyth being captain material as well.

as for the defence, of course Preissing or Markov can only be signed (and the 2-3 million dollar range sounds fine to me) if Kubina is traded. i dont see that happening but if it does it would definitely be an upgrade and cheaper.

none of this will happen of course, but the cap space is there to have Fernandez and Smyth – if Kubina is traded.

  5. Glucker says:

    current cap hit:
    36.172
    +Peca(2.25)…38.422
    +Colaiacovo(1.5)…39.422
    +Battaglia(0.6)…40.022
    *****************************
assuming the cap goes to 48, we have ~8mill to spend
assuming the cap goes to 52(very likely), we have ~12 mill to spend

6 goes to Smyth… 6 left to spend/ or, worst case, 2 left to spend
2 goes to a reasonable back-up goalie, 4 left to spend, or none
4(possibly) goes to 1 or 2 roster fillers

and don't forget, with all these D men being signed, its looking like JFJ may be getting ready for a cap clearer… remember, JFJ did say 6-8 guys would be moved, and we didn't spend to the cap this year, we had 2 buyouts to deal with… i think we're gonna see something interesting go down this summer, i really do… DON'T MIND***** ME AGAIN JFJ!!!!!

i wonder who is gonna be moved though… McCabe? Kubina? Gill(not that big a priority)? Antro? Poni? Tucker?…. there is demand for these guys in the league, Tucker, Poni and Antro wouldn't have lasted long on the market… we may be able to get some interesting things for these guys, hopefully they stay, but, you never know… JFJ may grow a pair and do something interesting(hopefully not destructive). Not to mention, with Maurice involved in JFJ's 'plan', we have some1 who knows the feel on the bench, who knows who deserves another chance and who deserves to be cut…  I feel that whatever moves are made this summer will be good for the present team, and the future of the team.

    I was thinking more of
    Smyth Sundin Steen
    Poni Wellwood Antro
    Tucker Peca Kilger

  8. tucksfan says:

why trade gill hes a good dman

  9. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

better for the team. the Leafs offense was like 4th in the NHL last year. Keep the core together. I can see us a year from now making offers to get smyth and his massive contract out of TO

  10. toronto77 says:

Kronwall is absolutely horrible, he has more NHL games played than white, coli, harrison, wozniewsky and has less points than them. The only player Kronwall can replace is Gill cuz no way in hell is he beating out coli and white. They probably will use him as trade bait, they can probably get a 3rd or 4th round pick at most.

  11. Glucker says:

    you sir, are an idiot

    which number is the smallest?
    34, 88, 73

34 happens to be Kronwall's total for NHL games
    73 is Colaiacovo's
    88 is White's

and, out of curiosity, since when do defensemen need to put up points?

Kronwall is very solid defensively, maybe even more so then Colaiacovo or White, but as we saw, TO is not a defensive team, he would have broken into the NHL on another team, but the Leafs have focused more on all their players being 2way rather then just offensive or just defensive… one of the reasons McCabe has become so bad defensively.

  12. Glucker says:

well, a lot of the injury actually came during practices(antro, wellwood, poni), or if it was in game, it was in the defensive zone… Peca's knee on knee, Tucker's broken foot(toe?), Kaberle's concussion… i think only Sundin was injured in the offensive zone this year, lol.

  13. Glucker says:

    wait, what happened in 98?

  14. lukeleim says:

Switch Peca and Stajan around… Steen – Stajan – Devereaux played well together at the end of the year.

  15. Glucker says:

you know, i think that Raycroft has good reflexes, i think the problem lies with his mind, he seems to doubt himself when making some saves, especially with the glove hand, he snaps it up, but just short of the puck, its not that hes not fast enough with it to make the save, its that he seems to hold it back… i think he has the raw skill, he just needs sum1 to help him refine it

  16. Glucker says:

Antropov and Poni should be on the PK, IMO

  17. tucksfan says:

i like the roster but switch steen and wellwood around wellwood should be on the top line and get markenen as back up to play 25-30 games for the leafs

  18. tucksfan says:

why do you come on here if u just gonna fucjing be an idiot. the leafs did better then ur habs and will always be better then ur habs stick to the montreal blogs u piece of shit

the offense was good, and theres nothing we can do but build on the dreadful defense.

  22. BruMagnus says:

you might want to take a long break

  23. BruMagnus says:

What happened to Calder Finalist theories about Carlo???
My god those were hilarious to entertain last year.

  24. BruMagnus says:

    it's 'their' not 'there'

  25. BruMagnus says:

    give Esche a chance.

  26. BruMagnus says:

Give Esche a shot. Don't forget what he was able to do.
A goalie will always suffer on a pathetic team. But he was an Olympian and Conference Finals goalie. He could be a decent 20 game backup for Raycroft, and perhaps challenge him to start.

  27. thatleafsguy says:

I think this would be more likely if Smyth is signed.

  28. BruMagnus says:

I just realized that Penssuck IS archion!!
Penssuck appeared but a few days AFTER Archion113 was banned. His posts to date have been mostly totally anti-Pens, ESPECIALLY whenever I (who he knows fabricated, with JuicemaN's initial attempt, his banning) make a post, especially involving the Pens, and especially involving Crosby!

Let's Keep TWO eyes on this guy…

  29. mojo19 says:

His glove is brutal. Part of the problem about Rayzor's glove is the fact that he goes down too early on long shots, giving him no chance to get it with the glove when it sails over his shoulder.

  30. mojo19 says:

Overall Kronvall is probably better than Ian White but not Carlo

  31. mojo19 says:

I always liked your idea about the Wellwood, Steen, Stajan extensions. If they'd go for it, its a great idea. We take a little extra cap hit now but in a couple years we're laughing.

And I believe with the team we had last year we could easily make the playoffs and place round 6th place.

  32. Glucker says:

the offense was good, the D wasnt bad but isnt changing much, and the goal tending sucks, and, unfortunatly, isnt changing for a few years.

since the only thing that can be changed is the offense, why not ramp it up to the max to compensate for the rest? and for the record, Smyth is a 2-way forward… he would help the defense.

  33. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

well, if healthy. Once Antropov misses 20 games, and some guys get out of the lineup, the team will end up around 7th, 8th.

  34. tucksfan says:

id sign and deal away wozniewsky

  35. the_word says:

    The correct answers are

    1. Cujo, Fernadez is too big of a gamble with 3 years left on his contract.  Signing Cujo means flexibility in the near future.
    2. Yes
    3. No, we don't need fifteen defensmen
    4. They can, but if you're gonna pay Symth 5.5-6.5 for six years, why not give the same kind of money to land someone like Giggy, Briere or Drury?
    5. Batts, who cares, Peca, No althought they should.
