Leafs Repeat As Rookie Champs
First round draft pick Jiri Tlusty had the winner as the Leafs defeated the Canadiens 3-2 in the rookie tournament final at Ricoh Coliseum. Justin Pogge made 34 saves for the win. The Maple Leafs main training camp opens on Friday. Earlier on Tuesday, in the 3rd vs. 4th game, Florida defeated York University 9-1.

Also this year Reykjavik, Iceland hosted to the International Ice Hockey Federation Division Three World Championships.
Iceland put up a perfect 4-0-0 against Turkey, Armenia, Ireland and Luxembourg to earn a berth in the 2007 IIHF Division Two World Championships, where they will face perennial powerhouses Ukraine, Bulgaria and Mexico.

That’s sad. Very sad. Celebrating a Leafs Rookie Tournament Victory, with only 4 teams in it, and 1 of them was a University Team? Man it doesn’t take much to entertain a leafs fan does it? I guess it’s to be expected when ur team hasn’t done jack sh*t in close to 40 years. Leafs win the tourny! Leafs win the tourny! Time to party like its 1967!

The scary part is, its possible. Who knows what will happen as long as Wang is an owner. Bettman should be scared, as this guy could cost him his job.

As far as Tlusty; the decision being made is whether or not he plays in junior or the AHL. I serioulsy doubt there is much chance at all of playing in the NHL this season, except as a call up for a couple games if the Leafs fall out of it.
He is too young and new to North America. One thing the Leafs are NOT guilty of anymore is rushing their young guys into the lineup.
theres going to be a lot of non-leaf fans crapping on this because it seems so needless and obscure but they have to understand one thing:
any news concerning our young players is big news for leaf fans, who really havent been able to receive any good prospect-news for the last decade thanks to their drafting strategy (which didnt exist).
considering the moves JFJ is making at the NHL level, at least his organizational moves are panning out. this tourney was just a positive reminder that the leafs have some good young players and that is it. nothing more.
also, its a good reflection of how meticulous and dedicated some leaf fans are in terms of following this tourney so closely.
Tlusty looks ready for the AHL, not just the OHL. this kid played with men last year and will probably do fine this year with the Marlies. Pogge looked good considering the size of the nets in this tourney were increased. both of these guys will be invited to the Leafs’ camp.
John Mitchell looked good too, dont know too much about this kid though.
Right now, the Marlies look like a patchwork of a couple of potential NHL stars, followed by a bunch of 3rd and 4th line forwards and 3rd pairing defencemen. the good news about that is that the two stars are at positions where the club needs them – goaltending and on the wing. also, its good that the leafs have a lot of depth in terms of 3rd and 4th liners. but more drafting is needed, more finds in the late rounds are needed, and the leafs MUST make a deal in the next year or so that sees a star young player come to toronto – which will inevitably see some of their young guys go the other way.
In terms of who is most likely to join the team in the next couple of seasons:

Williams
Suglobov
Westrum (as a depth player)
Earl
Sagat
Pogge

If anything, the past year they’ve been guilty of wasting the talent they have in the system and not bringing them up due to the signgings they make in the summer.
Look at Boyes now, McCauley (okay he played for the big team for a season), et al.
Would you not consider Suglobov as a 2nd line player? Looking at his stats he’s done fairly well in the AHL, but has limited NHL experience. (3 games if I recall)
He could be brought up sooner IF, he shows he wants it by playing every game all out, which if I recall is his most serious downfall. Poor work ethic.

i dunno. i would love for him to be that player. but he has been in the minors since 2000 (?). Maybe a playmaker like Wellwood would help him on the 2nd and third line (the difference between the two is negligible by the way with the leafs).
I see Williams’ work eithic as miles ahead of Suglobov’s, and his skill not far behind.
Time will tell.
on a different subject altogehter, a lot of people doubt Toronto’s offense this year (i guess they ignore the leafs’ top 4 potentially consisting of offensive D-guys like Coliacovo, McCabe, Kaberle, and Kubina). Last year the Leafs scored 257 and allowed 270 goals.
I predict the Leafs will put up close to the same amount of offense as last year and will allow just as many goals. the upgrades on D are not that great and I am not too confident in Raycroft just yet. However, their forward lines should be tougher to play against thanks to Peca and thanks to the deletion of Allison.
in any case, these are my predictions for the Leafs’ scorers this year (based on Mirtle’s blog; also, a HUGE disclaimer here – this is assuming these players are healthy all year long, which aint going to happen):
FORWARDS
Sundin – 40 goals, 85 points (more ice time, more points, regardless of who plays beside him)
Tucker – 25 goals, 50 pts
Wellwood – 20 goals, 60 pts
Steen – 25 goals, 55 pts
O’Neill – 25 goals, 50 pts (O’Neill will rebound, if only slightly and if only he is healthy)
Stajan – 15-20 goals, 40-50 pts
Poni – 15 goals, 35 pts
Antropov – 15 goals, 35 pts
Peca – 10 goals, 30 pts
Kilger – 10-15 goals, 25 pts
[2 more forwards, which could include Pohl, Westrum, Suglobov, Williams]
DEFENCE
Kaberle – 10 goals, 60 assists, 70 pts
McCabe – 15 goals, 40 assists, 55 pts
Kubina – 10 goals, 30 assists, 40 pts
Coliacovo – 10 goals, 20 assists, 30 pts
Gill – 1 assist
Belak – 1 assist
[not including potential production from Bell, White, Kronvall, Harrison]
Just from the players noted above (and not including those players who fill the remaining spots), the Leafs can reasonably expect to put up 245-255 goals (add in the other guys and the Leafs’ scoring is not that much worse off than last year).
Of course, this does not include injuries. However, it also does not include possibly stronger performances than what is predicted above. I particularly expect guys like Stajan, Coliacovo, Steen, Wellwood, and to a lesser extent Peca, O’Neill, and Kubina to have stronger seasons than what I have predicted. I am not sold on Poni and Antropov improving any more than where they are right now. Ditto for Kilger and Tucker.

no, i’m not, I’m saying that the tournament just shows that hab prospects aren’t as top notch as hab fans like to think they are. I’ve heard people say Chipchura will be the next Canadiens Captain, and Price will be one of the best tenders in the legue. Leaf fans do the same thing with Tlusty and Pogge, but not nearly as much.
I tend to disagree about goals against. Maurice usually gets the best out of his defence (look at Irbe)(also all of the defencive callups from his marlies last season).
Kubina and Gill are better than Berg, and Khavanov. Raycroft sould do better than Belfour. And Peca is much stronger in his own zone than Allison.
The only thing Im worried about is penalty minutes. Kubina, and Gill are more than capeable of getting 100+

if by every expert you men hockeysfuture then yeah. however few “experts” hav taken a look at most prospects anyway. neither have we really. Hab fans definetly overrate their prospects.
Boyes spent a year with the St. John’s Maple Leafs (and then 3 more with San Jose and then Boston’s farm teams). McCauley played 52 games for St. John’s over 2 seasons (most in one year).
So how were either of these players “wasted away in the system”?

They really fed York to the wolves. I watched that game and it wasn’t that the York guys completely sucked (a lot of ex-OHL guys in CIS), they just weren’t in any kind of game shape. The Leaf prospects just skated around them. Looks like everybody skated right around them.
Tlusty, Mitchell, and Aubin looked good, and I even think Tlusty let off the gas a little bit when they were well on their way to a route.
Tough crowd though, I felt like the only guy in the stadium cheering for the York goalie! Poor guy got completely shelled all night!

Ever since Pogge did well in the WHL and Won a medal with Canada (which my grandma coulda done with the Defense infront of him) all i’ve heard from leaf nation is “Pogge is the next Superstar”, “Pogge for Vezina”, Pogge this, Pogge that. Not nearly as much? Lindy Ruff said it best, “That’s the definition of a joke”.
Always helps to have AHLers and players over 20 on the team.

but Pogge vs Price (and i am aware that it is early), i would pick Pogge at the most important position in the game.
defensively? the leafs have more depth there too IMO.
its on the forward lines that the Habs are loaded for the future and the Leafs are still recovering from the draft schmaft era.
but like i said, its too early too tell — even for the experts.
well – i am not sold on the defensive play of Gill or anyone else for that matter. Maurice’s system should improve their play no doubt, but then you have huge question marks in goal.
all i am saying is, dont hold your breath for a revolutionary change in terms of keeping the puck out of the net.
Defensively, Kubina and Gill are slightly better than who they replaced … offensively? Kubina is way ahead. hence how horrible their combined 7.1 million signing was (whereas you had a similar kind of mediocrity with Berg, Khavanov, Richardson for just 5.35 million).
and yes, Peca is better than Allison in his own end, which i am pretty sure i addressed. the leafs are going to be on the PK A LOT this year.

Pogge did fabulas in the WHL, and the WJC with the offensive minded Barker and Stall in front of him. but Fleury did well at WJC too and he’s not quite panned out. sure some leaf fans (not me) think he’s the savior, but i’ve heard way more garble about chipchura and Price from hab fans at work, and on tis site.
