This I hope is when more then if. However, unless a team wants to over pay now my guess is the Leafs hold onto him until the deadline hoping that a hard shooting RHD dman gets more in a bidding war so to speak. The return will be much larger then some on this site think it will be!!
i could see marc bergevin trading for franson at the deadline
i think we have some picks and prospects to give the leafs or a veteran dman and a pick i.e. emelin and something if not he’ll wait to sign franson a ufa in the summer
I actually like Emelin from what I’ve seen of him, what are the strengths/flaws of his game? Can he shut down?
his strenghts are he cna move the puck…is very solid postionally can block shots his flaws are he doesn’t hit like he did before his kneee injury he used to make opposing forwards scared to cross the blueline because he would hit like a tank but not so much anymore he gets caught out of postion lots is incosistant from game to game …one game he’ll look very good and other games you wonder what he’s doing he can be a shut down guy butdoesn’t do it consistantly like he did
Haha well considering you said his strength is he is very solid positionally and his weakness is he gets caught out of position lots I’ll go with the inconsistent part.
I was just thinking if Dion gets moved Emelin wouldn’t be a bad pickup for the bottom pairing if he still is as physical as he used to, can shut people down and PK.
i’ll tell you this if we traded emelin for franson and you got rid of emelin emelin would fit in your top 3 not your bottom pairing he’d upgrade your defnce
Leafs should have absolutely zero interest in Emelin. He’s peaked and is very questionable. If Franson get’s moved it will be for a solid prospect or a 1st rounder.
you won’t get a 1st rd pick for franson he’s a ufa no team will give that up for him i think if you could get emelin from us you shuld take it he’d upgrade your defence
Rielly looked really good today..
If the plan really is to trade Dion then is there anyone on board with re-signing Franson?
Clearly this year is bust but there’s no way the plan going forward is a scorched earth rebuild.
Franson can hopefully come in at 5x ~5.5m with a D-core sans Dion at what is a reasonable rate for a top 4 defenseman in 2015.
Don’t hate the number but don’t love it. The other possibility would be to trade for an asset and hope to resign, like the Blues and Tkachuk. However as it has also been pointed out Franson will get more money and term as a UFA, This is where he probably could’ve been had for 4yrs 12mil, two contracts ago.
Hopefully, the Leafs acquire Mike Cammaleri and Elias…
Maybe trade our next 2 first rounders, Nylander, Gauthier, Leivo, Brown could get it done?
Lol, what’s Kiprusoff doing?
Do not joke, Blaze would love that!
Yes he would look good out there with your boys D’amigo and Colbourne on the top line. You’re all prospect squad will suck ass for a few years but it’s ok we’ll trade every drafted player as soon as they want ‘big money’.
Ya know in case a superstar (Stamkos) makes it to FA, cause that happens so frequently.
Too bad none of the players you want to keep were ‘drafted’ by the Leafs…And all the players you like have barely had any success in there careers.
I never said D’Amigo was a star, and I’m pretty sure Calgary likes Colborne’s development.
Kadri deserves a re-sign in my books.
Do I give a shit that Toronto did not draft JvR? How does that have any effect on his play as Leaf?
Everyone deserves a re-sign in your books, it does not matter they have 0 success, but since they play for the Leafs, they must be a solid player.
It does not. But you said a young team would suck ass…But what’s the difference between that team and this current squad? Not to mention, one of those squads is at the cap ceiling.
So Kadri should walk?
He’s a 27 year old defensemen entering his prime years….
So you plan on putting nothing but your young defensemen out there? Seems like a solid plan to ruin Reilly.
If we trade Phaneuf and we also trade Gardiner we almost have no choice but to resign Franson. I would be concerned about paying him over 5 mil
Cody was basically not even an NHLer by the end of last year, the Leafs have to stop taking on these gamble that he’ll be great for having a pulse for half a season.
Completely agree. The time to move Franson is now.
Disagree he’s been adding more defensive responsibility each season, his fancy stats aren’t bad. Franson a legitimate top 4 defensemen.
Yeah but he’s gonna want big money. Don’t we already have too many big contracts? It’s not like we’re winning the cup soon. And Franson is too up and down to make a big money commitment IMO.
It’s not big money though, it’s market value. This is assuming Dion is traded and Franson would have the biggest contract on the back end.
I know everyone likes to bitch about contract value but let’s be real here. To pay someone you have to have a chance to pay them. Name one player or move in the last decade Toronto had the chance to make but couldn’t because of cap restraint.
You won’t find any.
If Toronto had 20 mil to spend this off season what in the sweet hell would you spend it on?? You couldn’t find guys to waste it on.
Every team in the NHL is in the hunt for top 4 dmen and top 6 forwards.
But why? The last thing we need right now is more contracts. These contracts are stalling the Leafs rebuild, and you wanna add MORE contracts?
Under the assumption that contracts are subtracted yes. Contracts have not prevented Toronto from doing anything.
Having 4-5 dman being fresh AHL graduates is Edmonton Oilers esque
Unbelievable what’s happening to this team. I for one didn’t expect the Leafs to suck this bad after Carlyle got fired. It’s a humbling experience.
Corsi doesn’t exist anymore now that the Leafs are decent at it.
You are a good team through corsi…
Unfortunately, the Leafs do not have the talent to win.
The talent? What a vague and non sensical comment. No JvR and Kessel are talentless hacks that can’t score JvR had what 8 shots against NJ?
They have talent, but does the franchise have the talent to win games and be a successful franchise?
And all I need to know, is that Kessel/Phaneuf have been here 6 seasons…Only 1 playoff appearance, in a lockout-shortened season, so let’s put an asterisk there.
Not to mention 5/6 seasons have some of the worst collapses all time by a franchise in a playoff position.
Everyone blamed coaching, they fired the coach…The team does not look better.
So, guess what gets changed next? The core. If not, this team is staying in this position for the next 5 years atleast as a bubble team.
Kessel and JVR. And what else? Exactly. Not much there. Morgan Rielly and William Nylander will be dandies, but as for the rest, well let’s just say a rebuild is long overdue.
Will they be dandies? Like Schenn and Kadri? Kadri tore up the OHL.
What’s the NHL record for most coaches fired by one team in one season? If Hornachek gets fired before the season ends, that would really be something.
Horachek will take off his mask at the end of the season to reveal himself as Nick Beverly.
How is 5’6, 86 lbs Mitch Marner ranked ahead of 6’2, 177 lbs Dylan Strome?
In who’s rankings? Just saw Bob Mckenzie’s mid ranking and Strome is 4th, Marner 5th. Followed by Crouse, Zacha, Werenski Raantanen.
I would love if the Leafs could get either Hanifin or Strome but likely are looking at the second tier of prospects, lots of promosing guys there with some size which we need desperately.
If you are looking at Craig Button’s rankings those are always so off base. Had Zach Fucale 8th overall a few years ago.
bust, bust, bust and bust.
Assuming Toronto drafts one of them anyways.
Remember when Brayden Schenn was the top prospect in the world not playing in the NHL.
So, if they’re all busts…What’s the difference between them and your dream current squad?
I rather take a risk, then continue rooting a squad that is full of losers.
If calling this my dream squad is the best you have give up, you lost, you can’t make a credible point.
There are some really good prospects there and if you add one of them to Nylander, Kadri, Rielly, Kessel, JVR, Holland and whatever we get for Phaneuf/Franson the future doesn’t look too bad.
Hanifin would probably be a number 1 pick in another draft, he has just got Mcdavid and Eichel ahead of him this year
Maybe, Ryan Strome is lighting the world on fire, I’ve seen Dylan play and he’s looks great out there.
Maybe not bust but probably not a that home run piece we collectively crave.
However Strome makes a nice trade piece if the Leafs are looking to trade up in next year’s draft.
Ryan Strome isn’t light the world on fire…

You both have valid points and opinions. everyone can’t be traded at once, IMO. I agree change needs to be made as this group isn’t getting it done. However if you trade Franson and Phanuef I think you keep Kessel. Personally I prefer to keep him, if we get a good young centre Kessel helps open space for him. His increased output could also increase his confidence quickly.
