Well the signing of Kontiola gives them someone to compete with Holland for potentially the 3rd line.

That’s not to suggest though they won’t look for an alternative 3rd line centre.

Some of those centre options include:

Chris Kelly – a salary dump option for the Bruins, he could be had for nothing, but, if he has a NTC, he could be like Gorges, doesn’t want to go to Toronto maybe due to the rivalry factor.

Brandon Sutter – A RFA for the Pens, I think he could be had for a good price because they will have Dupuis back, Goc re-signed and Spaling is a option too at centre whom they acquired in the Neal trade. They have depth, the Leafs have potentially scoring winger to make available.

Brooks Laich – could be another salary dump option for the Caps if they’re insisting they’re keeping Mike Green on D. He is more a winger, but can play centre. He is a little bit injury prone though.

Mike Richards – a longshot, but he could still be available but probably at a high price since the Kings have found a way to keep him and slot his salary within the cap.

As for Free agents, its got to be between Ott or Legwand.

My guess on Ott is he wants 2nd line money still for a 4th line role. unless he brings that price down, forget about it.

Legwand, apparently he was made an offer and the Leafs were rumored to be one of those teams who did. If a short term 2 year offer, i am ok with that.

There’s TJ Galiardi who can play centre as well, but better suited as a winger.

Its pretty thin options other than Sutter and the longshot Richards and quite frankly both are longshots.

And there it is. Mike Santorelli your newest Leaf.

A likely short term fix until Gauthier or some of the other young centres can emerge.

I think we signed him to play wing. I like him better on the wing and we still probably have around 3.5-5 million approx to sign on FA then have to sign gardiner franson and reimer. We have 13.8 mill left according to cap geek. So we sign ott for 3 million per and then it will help in negotiations with gardiner franson and reimer.

I think he’ll end up at centre. But there is an option on the wing as well.

        JVR-Bozak-Kessel is the top line

        Lupul-Kadri- are 2/3rds of the 2nd line

Holland and Kontiola are likely going to battle for the 3rd line spot. Now Santorelli is there

Wing options for the 2nd-4th lines are Komarov, Clarkson, Frattin, Ashton, Leivo, Nylander. Santorelli could end up in this group too as you said.

Orr, McLaren are also options as are deep depth guys McKegg, Carrick, Kozun and Broll.

For now, this is a very small forward group if you ask me. But it could be fairly fast and skilled depending who they put in there or not in there (Orr, McLaren)

I still see at least one more player being signed for the leafs. I dont think our roster is quite filled out just yet. I think frattin is really going to have a break out year. Just a feeling i guess.

Santorelli might have been Vancouver’s best player before he was injured last season. Waaaay rather have him at 1.5m than Bolland anywhere near 5m

Here’s the team as of today with the RFA’s in there:

    VanReimsdyk – Bozak – Kessel
    Lupul – Kadri – Clarkson
    Komarov – Kontiola – Santorelli
    Bodie – Holland – Frattin

    Phaneuf – Robidas
    Rielly – Polak
    Gardiner – Franson

    • Gambo says:

There’s definitely some moves happening. No way Frattin and Holland are on the 4th line, no way Franson is on the roster and no way Toronto keeps 5 million+ in cap space. Should be interesting.

Ps. so stoked for Kontiola’s interviews.

Actually will be refreshing to see two lines in the bottom six capable of playing 12+ minutes a night. Really in forward group the line that looks the weakest is the second. Pushing Clarkson down with a true top 6 talent would go a long ways.

Lots of cap space and quiet low risk moves. Is there any way Franson and Reimer and whatever the Jets want for Kane can happen.

LN91 why so much hate for the leafs roster? i see our d an improvement from lasst year and whats the big difference from our playoff year? that same year its not like grabovski played that well to put us over the top.

  6. leafy says:

There’s a huge blockbuster trade coming.

  7. LN91 says:

Wow, once again, the fact Legwand signed with Ottawa should suggest how other players in the league currently view the Leafs team. Not appealing, although some here disagree.

Michael Del Zotto is still a free agent, what do you guys think about trading Franson for a draft pick and signing Del Zotto to take his place.
