Leafs Untouchables

Well, obviously Sundin and Raycroft are not packing up and leaving any time soon, no matter how much some impatient people want them to but lets talk about a few more of their untouchable players..

No matter how much leafymcleaf wants sundin and rayzor to leave its just not gonna happen, and i know that will dissapoint some people. But why? it is unessacery to trade them right now so:

Untouchables:
Sundin
Tucker
Kaberle
Raycroft
McCabe
Kubina

It is rather unfortunate the fact that McCabe and Kubina are untouchables but that was JFJ’s msitake, I guess we will just have to live with it, but atleast he got us some good things like Tuckers 3 year deal and he did well with Deveraux.

Out of Toronto:
O’NIEL!!
Aubin
Peca
Pearrault
Antropov
Battaglia

Have a good day :)

i agree getting rid of all the players you chose to get rid of other than antropov… i like the way he used his size along the boards…i say we keep him but definalty not on the 1st line, 3rd at best.

  2. DJTOKid says:

I agree with all of that, if they could trade antropov for something decent, then do it. Otherwise sign him for a million and put him on the 2nd or 3rd line. But the real issue is going to be getting Mats some help. I figure if they pick up Mats option resign Antropov and Deveroux. They would be left with probly 10 to 11 million to spend. There is no excuse to not aquire one of the marquee free agents or two. I would really like to see who ever the Leafs gm is to sign Bertuzzi and Shanahan to one year contracts. Maybe 3million for Bert and 4million for shanny? I think its reasonable. Then you have a nice first line and only one year commitments, which would put you right back into a buyers seat come next offseason. This would also leave the Leafs with 3 to 4 mil to use at the trade deadline, if in a position that they need to aquire some one. They would actually need to use about a million or less to sign a backup goalie, which could be anybody, so they would have 2 to 3 million for the trade deadline or trades during the season. Which is still a very nice position to be in.

Shanny          Sundin           Bertuzzi (How could this line not be dominant)
    Steen            Welly             Tucker
    Antropov        Stajan            Poni
    Kilger             Pohl              Devs

we all know the defencem that ain't gonna change.

And another year of jekyll and hyde Andrew Raycroft

  3. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

    Keep Antropov

  4. I-BE-LEAF says:

How could that line not be dominant?

1 or 2 things will happen:  either Beretuzzi will only play part of the season with various nagging injuries holding him back or he'll be too slow trying to skate while lugging around all his baggage.  The only way I would want to see Bertuzzi playing in a Leafs jersey is if he takes a serious pay cut worth around 1 mil which will certainly not happen.  Let the Bertuzzi circus go to another town.

  5. ShadysBackRJ says:

mccabe and kubina arent untouchables…theyre actually the opposite, its just that no one wants them

theres also no point in antropov yet…he could still do good

  6. LeafyMcLeaf says:

    Kubina = untouchable.

  7. LeafyMcLeaf says:

    Correction.

    Kubina <s>=</s> untouchable.

I love the guy, but people are calling for his head.

  8. LeafyMcLeaf says:

    Apparently strike through doesn't work.

  9. Go_Leafs_14 says:

Well, yah, I guess I shouldnt have put antro as out of toronto but we could get someone good for him and thats why I put him there, and for Kubina and McCabe like hell I want them out but no one wants them so we are stuck, thanks for your comments :)

  10. BieksaForMVP says:

Bertuzzi will only make 1.0 million, because no one will want him, nevermind for 3.0 million.

  11. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

kubina could be dealt if the leafs took salary back. for example Kubina for Foote seems like a good option to me. also, I'm sure Coloado would be more thanhappy to take him for theo,

  12. leafmeister says:

I would like to correct my previous article when i said the leafs should get rid of Antropov. Blue and White is right when he says to not get rid of Antropov. That WILL COME BACK AND BITE US but anyway yeah it wouldnt cost us that much so might as well.

  13. Glucker says:

all good, but battaglia and antropov stay… antropov had his best year yet, and battaglia is such a hard working player, he adds heart to the team

  14. Glucker says:

i dont know about that…hes a big strong scoring powerforward, there is always a market for a guy like that, GMs are willing to put a risk on him, not to mention the bertuzzi circus, remember, no publicity is bad publicity, and many teams in non-traditional markets would love a newsmaker like him

btw, your team is pissing me off:S they're ruining my pool! :P… although id be happy if a canadian team made it far (by canadian i mean vancover and calgary, ottawa is something else, i doubt they are even a hockey team, seem to be more of a ref-paying-off team) but seriously, 1000$ pool… daddy wants to get himself an iPhone

  15. lukeleim says:

You should change the name of this article to "Leafs Untradables"

  16. lukeleim says:

This being said, only untouchable on the Leafs is Tomas Kaberle.

  17. mojo19 says:

You can't get someone good for him since he's a UFA. He should be resigned long term to a 2 to 4 year deal. I liked Antropov's clutch goals this year and he scored 19 times despite missing almost 30 games.

I believe if he plays on the top line and the leafs get a legit top liner to play LW with Mats and Antropov, Niky will score over 30 goals and get roughly 80 pts.

  18. mojo19 says:

You keep mentioning the Theo for Kubina thing, and the more I think about it, the more I like it. I wouldn't mind seeing him come in and split the games with Razor next year, then depending, we could maybe resign him for a couple mil and go with the tandem (depending on their performance)

  19. leafs-man says:

Keep Antrapov, trade KUBINA. and maybe give pca another chance

  20. gregpb says:

First off, the Leafs have to rid themselves of slow, awkward skaters and guys who can't play period. This catergory includes in no particular order:

Nike Antropov ( useless other than his size)
Bates Battaglia ( love his heart but he is garbage)
Mike Peca ( wish we had him 7 years ago)
Yanic Perreault ( we traded for this guy and he barely touched ice)
Boyd Devereaux (waiver pick ups are to plug injury holes, not to be a regular)

Get rid of all these players immediately and use that money on others.

The D is set with Kaberle, Kubina, McCabe, Gill, White and Coliacovo

As for our lines, this is the best we can hope for.

    Tlusty              Sundin       Zubrus
    Ponikarovsky   Wellwood   Tucker
    Hartnell            Stajan       Steen
    Kilger               Pohl          Williams

Sad. Zubrus will add speed to Sundins wing. It's time to break in a rookie on the top line even though he isn't ready. Hartnell would flourish with Stajan and Steen in a lesser role.

As for goaltending, we are officially screwed.

Red Light Raycroft will play 65 games again.
Doesn't matter who the back up is.

  21. gregpb says:

Shanny although still effective, is an old fart. Why in the world would you want an injury prone bafoon like Bertuzzi? The Leaves need to fall off and we need to get some new buds.

On another topic, Briere and Drury won't be coming to Toronto, nor will any substantial free agent. It's time to bring up from our fantastic farm team. (Sarcasm)

  22. the_word says:

Alot of Bertuzzi talk, but the Leafs should avoid him, we already have an injuiry prone talented foward in Antropov, and we did lead the league in games lost to injuiry this year, AJ Burnett, I mean Todd Bertuzzi is not the answer.

As for the can we trade Kubina question, I think is a little premature to call this guy untradeable.  There are plenty of sucker GMs in the NHL, who are willing to take on a talented defenseman.  The best time to trade Kubina will be just after the big name UFA defensemen sign (that is after Souray gets 6.5 to 7 million), then JFJ should push Kubina to whoever lost out on the UFA defensemen market.

I know Kubina doesn't fit in with the Leafs, but he did get 7 goals with very limited PP time, and plays really well in his own end.  Its not that Kubina is a bad defensman, its that his role is obsolete on the Leafs because we already have McCabe.  If JFJ gets a little creative, Kubina is tradeable IMO.

If not, MLSE can afford to send Kubina to the minors and eat his contract.

  23. masarume says:

… You're not allowed to post here anymore.

If toronto does this, I'm leaving the city.

  24. masarume says:

If JFJ gets Big Todd, I'm gonna pee on his car.

I really hope we get one one big free agent + hartnell.

  25. masarume says:

I'd agree with everything you've said minus the Antropov thing.

I believe he still has value left and his size is perfect for the way the leafs player the cycling game.

Also, Tlusty is nowhere CLOSE to ready for the NHL. Also, we'll have about 10 million freed up in cap money this year… so why spend it on Zubrus? I'm not a fan and Mats deserves somebody better to play with.

I agree with Hartnell. If we can get him at less than 3 million and acquire another top level winger, I think I'll be happy. The top level winger, I don't want signed for more than 2 years, but I doubt that's going to happen.

  26. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

i indend it to be more of a business deal. it will cost 4 mil now (buy him out) instead of 5 mil or the next 4 seasons down the road. Kubina plays poorly without loads of ice time. He gets o PP time and is below average defensively. Toronto is a bad fit for him.

  27. Glucker says:

more holes then a guy who just got the kiss of death…

antropov had his best season yet and now you want to get rid of him =.=

battaglia out works anyone in the nhl, he doesnt have natural scoring ability, but he works so hard he even found his way onto the leafs first line for a couple of games this year…and hes not that slow at all…

peca, an excellent player, one of JFJs few good moves, he got injured and the team went to shit, probably not coming back, but definately a great player

perreault… missed alot of his season, still an allstar, just because maurice didnt play him doesnt mean hes not good, infact, hes the best faceoff man in the league and can skate like the wind

deveraux… how do you figure this guy cant skate? hes as hard working as battaglia and the fastest leaf…. do you even watch the team:S?

  28. Glucker says:

    oops submitted w/o finishing :p

ok, now… tlusty, gonna be good, but hasnt even played a full AHL season yet, not gonna be on the first line probably not even on the big team. Zubrus, this guy has talent but never uses it, his stats were blown up by ovechkin. and as for goal tending, there are lots of them becoming FAs, the only reason we played  raycroft so much was because maurice didnt like aubin after his attitude towards the marlies last year, and the other goalies we had just sucked. if we get a new guy, say backstrom(would be sweet) you would definitely see more alternation.

JFJ said he'd move 6-8 players, other then oneill, peca, and perreault, i expect all the moves will be in the AHL, maybe a new goalie too, who knows, but raycroft may just get better with more practice.

leafs would be better off scrapping the next 2 seasons to get better picks and become a real danger.

what we'll most likely see next year (i dont like, but thats just the way it is)

    steen sundin bertuzzi
    poni wellwood antropov
    deveraux stajan tucker
    kilger pohl battaglia

    D stays the same

    Raycroft
    Racine

sub par team, wont make it far, oh well trade off all our UFAs for 2008/2009 picks and make a late push for the bottom, if we can be in the bottom 5 theres a chance we get stamkos and tavares, then we'll have 4 star rookies in our line up, kulemin, tlusty, stamkos, and tavares, and who knows, by that time, brent aubin may break into the NHL, and hopefully have a season like his QMJHL one, not to mention pogge, kronwall, and stralman all up as well

  29. LEAFSLEAFSLEAFS1967 says:

I say Antropov stays and stays put on the top line, he can't produce on the 3rd line, but on the first he produces at least as well as any 2nd line guy out there and the Mats – Antro combo has great chemistry pick up a decently big scoring winner wit some heart and it would be amazing antro can produce and sundin can still have 1 top tier winger otherwise drop big Nik as much as i like the guy.

  30. LEAFSLEAFSLEAFS1967 says:

and sundin we get rid of mats at this point and we have no chance at all of going anywhere.

  31. Glucker says:

those numbers would be his career high, if even… i like antropov, but knee damage has hampered him, and leaves him vunerable to further injury, i dont think hes ever gonna have a 82 game season

  32. Glucker says:

nono, kubina fits on kaberle's wing perfectly, he just gets paid too much, he is a great defenseman, but overpaid. i think we could trade him to a rookie-rich team (to pitts for letang and a pick? :P) because he is experienced in nhl and international play, i believe he has an olympic medal(little kids love shinny stuff), and a rookie-filled team could afford to splurge abit

  33. gregpb says:

Did the Leafs make the playoffs? I am a die hard leafs fan and this team is awful offensively and in goal. Antropov is not the answer as you all seem to think. Peca and Perreault are old. Devereaux was floating around the AHL as a third liner and now he is the fastest player on the Leafs??????????????????????????????? Battaglia I bring back only if its a 2 year 1.5 million contract tops (just because of his hustle)

Glucker, I am sure you are a decent human being, but it's the fans like you that allow MLSE to put a shit product on the ice year in and year out.

  34. DJTOKid says:

Here's a fresh idea how bout dress a line up of….

    Tucker    Sundin    Wellwood
    Antropov Stajan     Poni
    Kilger     Williams   Steen
    Battes    Pohl        Deveroux
    ex:Tlusty, Newbery, Aubin

We know the Defence and goaltending.

This would leave them with ten to twelve million in cap space to sit on and wait. They could stay competitive for long enough to wait until a big name is available via trade. Just another theory to throw out there, but it might be the change of pace thats needed.

  35. masarume says:

If we get Letang for Kubina, I'm going to a Leafs game next season.

  36. mojo19 says:

Gregpb, incase you didn't watch any leafs games this year, Nik Antropov is the leafs best winger along with Tucker, and he doesn't cost us 5 mil a year. Its fans like you, who want to get rid of the teams top guys that allow MLSE to blah blah blah….
