Leafys Rumor Roundup

I’ve got the latest on everything going on in the league.

Toronto Maple Leaf fans have been trying to figure out how we can dump Pavel Kubina. I’d like to note to these guys that Pavel Kubina has a no trade clause, and makes $5 million a year, which will pretty much keep him in Toronto for the next five years.

Speaking of the Maple Leafs, does anyone else think John Leclair could be a solid winger for Sundin? There have been no rumors about it, reports say the Flyers, Islanders, Dallas, and Canadiens are interested.

According to Spectors, Sheldon Souray could be heading back to New Jersey, which makes me wonder what would go back, considering the Devils cap space. Could Scott Gomez be leaving the swamp after years of speculation?

Plenty of speculation that the Avs will move a defenseman. Sounds like Liles to me, he’s the only one who can bring in a decent forward, the other tradeable defenseman really can’t bring in anything.

And I’ve just checked TSN and they’re reporting Andre Roy has been picked up off waivers by the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Sadly, there are few more rumors, I’ll be back with more as soon as possible.

Also I thought it was 4 years, I maybe wrong though

    here a rumor i heard

    Flo:  Gerber, draft pick
    Ott:  Roberts,  Belfour

The Flyers are sitting in last place in their division and have been building a younger, faster team for a couple of years now.  What benefit would they get from picking up LeClair for a little less than 750,000 for the rest of this season?  He's not the goal scorer or offensive player he used to be, hes had injury troubles, and its not like the flyers need his veteran presence, they still have forsberg, knuble, gagne, hatcher, rathje, sanderson, and kapanen.   He's not going to push them into the playoffs, so there is not reason to sign him.

Hey I also heard about a deal involving Souray and Gomez. It doesnt make any sense to me though. I also heard some datsyuk (sp?) rumors. Datsyuk/Kovalev/Samsonov may be a good line.

I wonder whats the chances of Briere signing in Montreal this offseason?

  7. 92-93 says:

oh geesh. leafy you really like the vets dont you (belfour, domi, etc.)?

no, the leafs are not interested in Leclair and no he wouldnt be good on his wing.

dumping Kubina is not an option until maybe the 4th or 5th year of his contract. no one wants him. its also too early to judge him considering that he is just coming back from injury and just getting the minutes he used to get.

but i wonder who said getting Kubina would be a dumb thing to do considering his redundancy and poor play last year … hmmmmmmm … i wonder who …. ??

  8. 92-93 says:

no he doesnt have a no-trade clause. … but his term and his salary, he might as well have.

  9. 92-93 says:

terrible for the Sens. i know they need some vets and some grit … but can they not do better than this?

  10. mojo19 says:

that would be a great trade for the senators considering Gerber with his salary would easily clear waivers. I imagine it would be a fairly high draft pick for Florida to make this kind of deal, plus Florida would be stuck with Gerber for the next few years, where as Roberts and Belfour would be retiring probably after this year.

  11. mojo19 says:

Leclair would be such a pointless player to pick up, I'd rather bring Czerkawski back in the league and play him before picking up John Leclair.

  12. LeafyMcLeaf says:

I said Kubina was a mistake!

  13. mojo19 says:

So 27 games into a 4 year deal 92-93 and Leafy are already down on a big solid defensman who for the last 5 of the last seven years has consistantly scored around 10 goals per season or higher.

I'll give you overpaid, and I do think it was a mistake, but he's a good player and thats the market for a big defensman like Pavel Kubina. Sorry guys.

  14. passionch says:

Yeah, I'm not sure if Souray would want to be back with his old team when he wants to be closer to the West coast.

  15. Monsieur_no says:

I also heard about datsyuk for souray

but just forget Briere in Montreal sabres will keep him

  16. wingerxxx says:

LeClair is not the answer for the Leafs.  If you have watched him play at all this year, you'd agree.  His wheels are totally gone, and he's had a hard time keeping pace with his teammates.  He would be a step backward for Toronto.  If I were the GM of any of those teams 'rumored' to be after him, I wouldn't pick him up.

Liles is not going to be traded.  If the Avs move a defender, it's going to be Vaananen.  Liles and Skrastins cannot be traded, not as long as the Avs have a chance at the playoffs.

  17. TheFish12 says:

good deal for sens, however, I doubt it will happen… last season, the panthers committed to build a winner and not rebuild the team, trading these players would ssem like they were heading into a rebuilding stage, and their goaltending is not bad enough yet to trade for Gerber.

As much as I would love to see Roberts in a sens uni, I don't think this would go down

  18. LeafyMcLeaf says:

Kubina has never been worth half of 5 million, and he's playing like shit. He has Bryan McCabe syndrome, thinking he's a forward. I see him get caught trying to play too far up all the time.

  19. Uncleben says:

I like the idea, but not Roberts

  20. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

    you've messed up Kubina's contract a lot.

It is a one way 20 million dollar contract, over 4 years (evenly split, 5 million per) and he does NOT have a no trade clause

  21. 92-93 says:

well maybe you didnt read the comment i made too well because i did say it was too early to tell.

that being said, i'll always stand by my position that Gill and Kubina were overpaid and might be untradebale because of it.

you mention the goals scored (which are not many for an 'offensive D-guy') but you conveniently ignore his other stats (his +/- for example).

it was a mistake because the leafs have loads of two-way defencemen like Coliacovo, WHite, Bell, … even kids in the future like Harrington and Stralman.

They needed a stay-at-home guy and got Gill instead. and they only needed ONE defenseman IMO – even with all the injuries we've seen this year.

  22. mojo19 says:

you're right. They only one the needed to sign was Gill. But Kubina is a good player, and hopefully will turn around and start to produce.

And as far as thinking he's a forward goes. I think he plays better when he moves up a bit and gets into the action, atleast hes part of the game when he does that and is effective.

Anyway's hopefully they can trade him for like Cullimore or something. Chicago has the capspace, don't know if they'd want Kubina, but Jassen Cullimore isn't anything special so it would be a salary dump basically, maybe they could get a player like that from a team that struggles to attract high profile free agents.

  23. shakrmakr says:

Kubina is a great dman, doesn't need to be moved.

  24. andyem says:

He is a Dman with a great shot from the point. Why isnt he used more often on PP1? Maurice needs to give others a shot at top spot on the PP. Kaberle AGAIN has stopped shooting so now our PP has tanked. Its so obvious he will pass from the point because his body isnt even in a position to shoot. BRUTALLLL

  25. Sundinrocks13 says:

He gets 5 mill a year and takes a chunk of our salary.

  26. justin_6 says:

trade kubina he's nothing anyways all we need is better defence and  1 amazine forward

  27. leafsrule1967 says:

The habs have the same chance in geting briere as the leafs have in geting mike modano lol keep dreaming lmao briere in montreal

  28. JuiceBox says:

Kubina is staying put for a while…..I think that McCabe needs to go, take him off the power play and he is one of the worst D-Man in the league…..
