Leetch to Oilers?

Rumor has it the Rangers are thinking of renting out Leetch to a team with playoff potential. At the same time, Kevin Lowe has mentioned he is considering renting a player for the playoffs. Coincidence? I think not.The statement made by Kevin Lowe was reported in the Edmonton Journal. In it, he said that he was not adverse to the idea of renting players. For example, a few years ago the Oilers dealt Boris Mironov for a fourth-round draft pick. They wouldn’t mind being on the recieving end of such a deal.

On the other hand, rumors are circulating that once Leetch is healthy, he will be traded to a contender for … you guessed it… draft picks. He is an unrestricted free agent at the end of this year, and it assumed that he at the end of the season he would then re-sign back with the Rangers.

And we know that the Rangers and Oilers are avid trading partners. A deal is definitely in the mix.

I think it’s a bit unlikely to happen, however, i would not be surprised at all.

I doubt it will only be draft picks and that’s what makes the rumor create doubts. A player in return at the very least. Sather probably wants a player that he drafted as an Oiler. Edmonton has enough depth in their youth system to trade. I’d say Leetch (who has $3._M left on his salary) for Chimera and a 4th, or Leetch for Horcoff and a 2nd.

Sather should start by trading that Mush-head Lindros to the Oilers for a box of doughnuts and some old TV guides.

Seriously though, I think that Leetch will cost more than draft picks. I agree with the statement that he will want players that he drafted and feels he can develop.

How likely is Leetch to re-sign with the Rangers after the deal him? Considering they are going nowhere for the next few years. Why wouldn’t Leetch go to a contender. I could see him going to the Red Wings in a New York minute. After all the Wings have been looking for an experienced defenseman. Seems like Leetch to Detroit is a good fit.

  3. Stogie7 says:

    Probably won’t happen.

By the way Mirinov was traded four players, including Moreau, and Cleary. and it wasn’t a rent aplayer deal.

    Coincidence? Yes

Why? Because its Edmonton. Unless they suddenly found a chest full of gold they cant afford to add a Brian Leetch.

When Lowe says he’d rent a player he means a cheap 2nd/3rd line guy to add depth, not Brian Leetch.

A deal is not in the mix, anyone believing that is as dumb as you for suggesting it.

And where did you get Edmonton trading Mironov to Chcago for a 4th? The trade was Mironov, some no name prospect named Jonas Elofson and McAmmond for Cleary, Moreau, Kilger, Laflamme.

not bad for renting a player, and Chicago got him for almost 4 years

  6. Leaf_Expert says:

We might have something here… But I don’t think we will ever see Leetch don another teams jersey….

If Sather would even think about trading away one of the longest serving Rangers in Ranger history, then we wouldn’t have seen him commited to aging Messier who was re-signed for 3million…..

But it doesn’t mean the Oilers wouldn’t go after a guy like Tverdavsky…….Who is a more likely pick for the Oilers to aquire defensivly,

  7. beckfan says:

Hey, can Leetch at least prctice with the team first before we make asumptions that hes gonna get dealt?

GET OVER IT!!! Former Flyer. Ever since he left the Flyers haven’t made the Finals.

I say Leetch to Wings as well. Leetchy and Chelios? Like the US Team.

  9. mikster says:

Messier should have never left the Rangers, but Neil Smith insisted so after a season without Messier, he signed Fleury, Lefebvre, Kamensky, Quintal, and Kirk McLean.

Messier was Sather’s player, Leetch wasn’t. Messier signed for $3M, and Leetch would want at lwast $6M. Big difference.

    Sather would actually trade Leetch.

I’d rather have Leetch than a whiney complainer in Oleg Tverdovsky.

    Yeah really….

He looked fine during practice though.,

Ah, that was fun. Good one

  12. mikster says:

    Hehhe good one.

  13. Nemix says:

True , Chicago’s Christian laflamme, and edmonton’s Dean Mcammond were also a part in this deal.

  14. Nemix says:

Yes, i belive mironovs contract was up that year as well.however mcammond was thrown inthe deal. if u remember mironov at the time of this deal..he was a quality pointman,,just a salary issue

  15. bsfan1914 says:

oh and the rangers last made the playoffs…..4 years ago was it

    just messin with ya buddy

  16. mikster says:

At least their they still have loyal fans selling out games.

    Hehehe, messing back wit ya!

  17. Sands says:

Ok I was convinsed the team should dump the team and start over tonight… But i looked at the standings…… They are 4 point sout and all the teams in front and around them are loseing…. but if they need to trade Leetch by the deadline then……..

I rather grab a top second round pick and a guy like Merchment. That or a 1st round and a 4th round pick. Leetch is worth every cent. And I would then Re-sign him. If he agrees to resign With the Rangers then i would trade him. Leetch would give Edmonton a push they need.

  18. Bodster says:

    you must be on drugs

  19. MossRocks says:

While it is interesting that Lowe has thrown his hat into the ring, he certainly never implyed that Leetch is an option and it would be a gargantuan stretch of logic to assume so. Leetch will not be an Edmonton Oiler. (Well…. he might be for a couple of days this offseason like Richter)

I find it unlikely that Lowe will actually add a rental player. Marchant is his rental player. Any moves made will be either peripheral (role players for role players) or moves with legitimate long-term vision. Lowe thinks outside of the box, but the Oilers can’t afford to play games with their assets.
