Lidstrom injured in Colorado game

First reports are that Lidstrom has suffered a knee sprain when hit by Colorado forward Ian Laperriere into the boards. Anyone that saw this hit saw that Lidstrom looked to have more then a knee sprain as he looked groggy trying to skate back to the bench but word is that he was tested for a cuncussion which he passed showing no signs of a head injury.

A couple of shifts later Downey took an instigator penalty to reply, fighting Laperriere (give Downey the win in this fight). Good on Downey for sticking up for his teamate as i don’t mind him taking an instigator with a good reason like this.

Wings are already without Kronwall and Rafalski on defense at the moment and with the loss of Lidstrom this leaves the Wings without a true top 4 defenseman while being on a 6 game losing streak. This leaves the Wings with a top 2 of Chelios (usually a 5th or 6th dman) and Lilja (plays a top 4 role but more of a 5th or 6th defenseman) which is scary to think about for any Wings fan. Holland might need to pull off a trade for a top 4 defenseman faster then he thought with injuries mounting for the Wings.

Wings are also without Cleary and Hasek with the only good news from these injuries being some of these players getting some rest before the playoffs and the Wings are getting a good look at their youngsters. Meech, Quincey and likely 6’5 Ericsson now will get a look at as everytime he has played for the Wings (camp and pre-season) he has been very impressive along with being the Wings best defenseman and AHL all star in Grand Rapids.

As i write this the Wings are up 4-0 on Colorado with all 4 goals being scored after the Lidstrom injury. This injury seems to have lit a fire under the Wings and has them playing with the passion that has lead the Wings to a large lead in the NHL overall standings.
