Lightning buying out Vinny Prospal's contract

ERIK ERLENDSSON | The Tampa Tribune

TAMPA – The Tampa Bay Lightning on Tuesday informed left wing Vinny Prospal that the team is buying out the remaining three years of his contract.Tampa Bay general manager Brian Lawton sent a letter of intent to Prospal and his agent informing them of the team’s decision. Prospal has 24 hours to request not to be placed on waivers, otherwise he automatically goes through waivers and any team that picks him up would be responsible for the remaining $10.5 million on his contract. If he elects not to be placed on waivers, Prospal would receive the buyout and become an unrestricted free agent.

Prospal, who was reacquired from the Philadelphia Flyers before last season, signed a four-year contract worth $14 million last June. He has $10.5 million remaining on his deal.

Under the terms of the buyout, Prospal would receive two-thirds the remaining value of the contract spread out over twice the length of the remaining contract, which equates to $7 million over six years. By buying out the contract, the Lightning will take a salary cap hit of $1.167 for the next six seasons.

Apparently they didn't get the message. The thing about Prospal is that he goes good year, bad year, good year, bad year, etc.

    Observe his stats:

    2002 – 55 pts
    2003 – 79 pts
    2004 – 54 pts
    2006 – 80 pts
    2007 – 55 pts
    2008 – 71 pts
    2009 – 45 pts

By my estimations, Prospal is due for no less than 70 points next season.

  2. UWSensFan says:

Wouldn't it be funny if he takes the buyout and then another team signs him to a cheap 2.5M one year deal and he does get 70+ points?  It'd also be a giant kick in the pants to the Lightning, so 2 birds with one stone!

  3. pezzz123 says:

    hahaha it's so true!

  4. pezzz123 says:

I wouldn't mind him on the Flames at all. 1 year, 2.5 millions. Or 2 years, 4 millions.

    Bourque – Langkow – Iginla
    Prospal – Jokinen – Dawes
    Glencross – Conroy – Moss
    Nystrom – Boyd – Sjostrom
    Prust, McGrattan

    Bouwmeester – Phaneuf
    Regehr – Sarich
    Pardy – Giordano

That would be a sick team.

Columbus, Dallas, Anaheim, Minessota…some good places for him. If Anaheim can another scoring threat like Prospal…then they could be a threat in the NHL next year. The problem last years was scoring because they only had one line…but next year they have two.

and then you can form a decent theird line with Prospal

I'd put Dawes on the forth line as an energy guy Moss on the 2nd and Sjostrom on the 3rd line but other than that I agree it would be a pretty solid opening roster.

  9. RealisticNick says:

I honestly think Perry, Getzlaf and Ryan is one of the best lines/lines with potential in the NHL.  They can go around you with speed, dangle or absolutely run you over.  They are 24, 24 and 22 if I am correct?  Absolutely ridiculous.

  10. paulieplatypus says:

Make sure not too many people are watching… Because people who live in glass houses, should'nt try to kill two birds with one stone.

  11. mojo19 says:

I agree. I'm a big fan of Moss as well, I almost took a chance on him in my pool last season, might take him next year.

And ya, Prospal would be good with Calgary.

  12. mojo19 says:

I agree. And every team has to deal with injuries. Prospal would be another guy who could fit in with those forwards.

Another good thing about Vinny Prospal is that he is a natural centre, played a little bit of centre with Philly and Ottawa back in the day, but mostly plays LW now, so you have the option of moving him to the middle if you need.

  13. leafy says:

Mike Krushelnyski was a little like that. One season he'd look like an all-star, and then the next season he looked like a complete stiff.  Another guy that comes to mind is Pierre Mondou.

  14. leafy says:

I'd take Prospal on my team any day. An ideal guy for your second line.

  15. paulieplatypus says:

Do you mean Sjostrom as an energy guy instead of Dawes?  Because Sjostrom is a good defensive player/penalty killer with great speed, but has absolutly no offensive game what so ever.  He's the energy guy/penalty killer your talking about who's perfect for the fourth line.

Dawes on the other hand; Is not fast, Is very small, Does not check, Is not very good defensivly, but might one day possibly ??? become a goal scorer if put in the right situation with the right players on the 2nd line.  If Dawes aint scoring goals, his time in the NHL will be very brief.

  16. pezzz123 says:

I like Moss a lot, but he's a sooo good fit on the 3rd line with Glencross and Conroy (amazing chemistry) that I don't wanna move him. He'll provide scoring depth on the 3rd.

Dawes could put up decent numbers on the 2nd with big bodies like Jokinen and Bourque to make room.

  17. paulieplatypus says:

Paul Holmgren (the not so great GM of the Flyers) must be kicking himself for messing up his teams salary cap situation as badly as he has.  Not only did he did not leave enough $$$ cap room to sign a first string goalie, but now there is absolutly no way he can go out and sign Prospal… Who's clearly the most perfect player available to play along side Daniel Briere.  The only time Briere has not struggled in Philadelphia is the time when he briefly played with Prospal after he was aquired two seasons ago at the trade deadline.

  18. mojo19 says:

I know Mike Krushelnyski but who is Mondou?

  19. mojo19 says:

i have a confession. I love Prospal. He's been one of my favourite players for years.

  20. leafy says:

Mondou played for the Habs from the mid 70's to mid 80s.  He was a very skilled player, but also a bit of an enigma.

His career was cut short after being blinded in one eye by a careless high stick from Ulf Samuelson.  Actually Mondou scored on the play despite getting the stick to the eye.  This story is yet another reason why people hate Samuelson.

  21. pezzz123 says:

he's gonna waive Randy Jones and sign Prospal. Watch it.

  22. paulieplatypus says:

If the Flyers are able to sign Prospal, they would arguably have three #1 lines.

  23. pezzz123 says:

and they would be damn scary.

Gagne – Richards – Van Remsdyk
    Hartnell – Carter – Giroux
    Prospal – Briere – Laperriere
    Carcillo – Powe – Asham

    Timonen – Parent
    Pronger – Coburn
    Carle – Tollefsen

    aouchhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. welcome the Stanley Cup.

  24. mojo19 says:

Good looking team. I like that 4th line centre, I'm giving him the nickname "Boom Boom Powe"
