Little Latvian longs for a BIG change

First of all, I feel that it is a crime that no one wrote an article about this sooner, and I am doing this because I feel it should be addressed on this website. As a goal tender myself, I must say that Arters Irbe is probably the coolest goalie in the NHL, and he is really ticked off right now. Kevin Weekes has been treated as the #1 guy in Carolina as Irbe is 0 and 3 so far this year. As many of you may know, Irbe is a workohloic and can’t stand to play less than 75 games a year.Irbe has been through this in the past. When Barrasso was in NC last year, they split duties, and when he shared the crease with Trevor Kidd, they were both the #1 guy, depending on which day it was.

If Weekes and Irbe have anything in common, it is that they are both VERY streaky. Either one of them is incapable of having one or two bad games, they both seem to go cold for long stetches.

Here are some things that Irbe said to the Raleigh News and Observer:

————————————————-

“I hate the situation,” Irbe said. “I’m not happy. I’m working my [butt] off right now any way I can to get back in the net. It hasn’t been easy. It’s been hard. I’ve dealt with this before, but it doesn’t make it any easier.”

“I have to be able to see that Kevin is doing a great job,” Irbe said. “He definitely deserves to be a No. 1 in this league. I’m happy for him, but it doesn’t help my cause. … This team has been good to me, but I don’t see how the two of us fit in the net.”

“Our hockey lives don’t run until age 60 or 70,” Irbe said. “We have to be realistic, as our bodies don’t hold that long. It doesn’t matter how many years I have left. I want to get the best out of it, the best out of my career. I want to leave my mark, achieve the most possible.”

————————————————–

Irbe went on to say that he would play this year, no matter what, and “that is all I am going to say”.

Whoaaaaa!!!!!! Am I reading between the lines here or what, is Archie thinking of heading home to Latvia, where he is considered a God? Or does he want to stay in the NHL, where he is only 82 games behind the Dominator for the record for the most NHL games played by a European goalie?

As a Canes fan, I think the Canes will not trade him unless the “Deal they can’t refuse” comes along. This is typical Carolina Hurricanes style, and Weekes will undoubtedly blow it eventually and Archie will be the big hero again.

Still it is fun to wonder what Jim Rutherford would take for Irbe.
