Little Latvian longs for a BIG change

First of all, I feel that it is a crime that no one wrote an article about this sooner, and I am doing this because I feel it should be addressed on this website. As a goal tender myself, I must say that Arters Irbe is probably the coolest goalie in the NHL, and he is really ticked off right now. Kevin Weekes has been treated as the #1 guy in Carolina as Irbe is 0 and 3 so far this year. As many of you may know, Irbe is a workohloic and can’t stand to play less than 75 games a year.Irbe has been through this in the past. When Barrasso was in NC last year, they split duties, and when he shared the crease with Trevor Kidd, they were both the #1 guy, depending on which day it was.

If Weekes and Irbe have anything in common, it is that they are both VERY streaky. Either one of them is incapable of having one or two bad games, they both seem to go cold for long stetches.

Here are some things that Irbe said to the Raleigh News and Observer:

————————————————-

“I hate the situation,” Irbe said. “I’m not happy. I’m working my [butt] off right now any way I can to get back in the net. It hasn’t been easy. It’s been hard. I’ve dealt with this before, but it doesn’t make it any easier.”

“I have to be able to see that Kevin is doing a great job,” Irbe said. “He definitely deserves to be a No. 1 in this league. I’m happy for him, but it doesn’t help my cause. … This team has been good to me, but I don’t see how the two of us fit in the net.”

“Our hockey lives don’t run until age 60 or 70,” Irbe said. “We have to be realistic, as our bodies don’t hold that long. It doesn’t matter how many years I have left. I want to get the best out of it, the best out of my career. I want to leave my mark, achieve the most possible.”

————————————————–

Irbe went on to say that he would play this year, no matter what, and “that is all I am going to say”.

Whoaaaaa!!!!!! Am I reading between the lines here or what, is Archie thinking of heading home to Latvia, where he is considered a God? Or does he want to stay in the NHL, where he is only 82 games behind the Dominator for the record for the most NHL games played by a European goalie?

As a Canes fan, I think the Canes will not trade him unless the “Deal they can’t refuse” comes along. This is typical Carolina Hurricanes style, and Weekes will undoubtedly blow it eventually and Archie will be the big hero again.

Still it is fun to wonder what Jim Rutherford would take for Irbe.

I have always been an Irbe fan myself and I became an even bigger one in last year’s playoff. He deserves a chance for a starting job anywhere he plays. Even if he is backup to Patrick Roy there should be competition considered (of course Patrick would prevail lol).

But I dont know why he hasnt been given a chance. I saw all three games he lost and he didnt look too bad. His defense screwed him many a times, and he saved their butts 9 out of 10 of the times.

Did he have a God-awful preseason or something? What were his #’s in there? Thats the only thing I can think of…

To Atlanta: Irbe – To ‘Canes: Koslov, Hnilincka

To Rangers: ” – To ‘Canes: Petr Nedved

  3. Habs4ever says:

Irbe is such a great goalie. I hope he does break that record. If he goes back to Latvia, the NHL would be missing possibly one of the best european netminders ever, behind Tretiak and Hasek.

  4. acebailey says:

The Ranger already tried to unload Nedved on the Canes (for Primeau I believe), but on the advice of Ron Francis, who played with Nedved in Pittsburgh, the Canes stayed away from Nedved.

Nedved is death in the locker room.

I don’t have the numbers, but yeah, you are right his preseason was friggin aweful.

    WOW man, great article!!!!!

    How about this trade:

to Boston: Irbe + 2 draft picks

to Carolina: Mclarren + Tim Thomas + Mikal Groseck (or however you spell his name)

THE BEST PART: Boston then trades Grahame to Atlanta screwing Dafoe out of a job.

  7. titans says:

I’d love for the Flyers get him.

  8. titans says:

Bruins don’t need a goalie! Shields is the man!

  9. acebailey says:

Do you think that Shields is a Stanley cup winning goalie though? I don’t know if I am sold on that one yet. But a Shields/Irbe tandem could get it done I think.

  10. acebailey says:

Jim Rutherford will want proven forwards if he is gonna pull a trade. Philly has forwards, but who are they willing to part with? You can keep Keith “the human vagina” Primeau.

  11. titans says:

Shields is all they need! He’s the real deal!

My Prediction…Lord Stanleys cup visits Beantown!

  12. titans says:

Aww lay off ole “Prim’s” sure he stabbed his coach in the back then kicked him when he was down. But does that make him such a bad guy?
