LOOKING FOR A DEAL

Mojo 640 in Toronto is reporting that the Toronto Maple Leafs have made a substancial offer to Detroit forward Henrik Zetterberg.

Zetterberg is a restricted free agent so detroit will now have the opportunity to match toronto’s offer, however in doing so it is said that Detroit will then be over the salary cap! This would mean they would have no money to sign second RFA Pavol Datsuk! Detroit just may be handcuffed in this situation!

Note: This is not confirmed and is only a rumor at this point

Being a fan doesn’t mean you have to sit around and fiddle while Rome burns. It means you DO get frustrated and annoyed at the BS that has gone on so far and watching every other team manouever to get better… and the Leafs qualify all their 4th-line-at-best guys and blow 4.6 million of a tight cap on an over the hill goalie.

  2. Aetherial says:

Yes, we should just basically throw in the towel for as long as it takes for us to get a buttload of HUGE future talent… like Pittsburgh did.

    Nice.

  3. FoppaFlyers21 says:

Well, whatever works i guess. However, that is why Detroit, NewJersey, and Colorado can safely be called superpowers. They don’t need to take the cowardly approach just to HOPEFULLY be a contender in a few years.

  4. Tradedude says:

what are you TRYING to prove?

  5. BruinsGM says:

Of all the retarded things I have heard… this has to be up there…

Toronto would be foolish, to say the least, to sign a high profile player like Zetterberg (lets face it… he’s gotten a lot of attention and hype to not be high profile) and give up all fo the compensatory draft picks…

In the era of the new CBA… it is going to become SO important to bring up prospects from within… much more important than in years passed

Good prospects = good players who are cheap to sign

Of course this is coming out of Toronto though… it seems there is a new report of who Toronto or Montreal “might get” every half hour

Or maybe I’m just going through withdrawal from the Bruins’ pure laziness

  6. Aetherial says:

Detroit Colorado and New Jersey are right up there with the Leafs as the *has beens* in the league.

I doubt you will see them remain superpowers.

I was being facetious about Pittsburgh. I hate any system that rewards a team for purposely tanking over and over again.

  7. LeafBasher_BEATER says:

This actually makes a lot of sense considering how the leafs have been relatively silent with UFAs.

Infact, this would be a bloody brilliant move that would set the stage for a younger + better leaf team.

    Zetterberg, come to papa!

    GO LEAFS GO!!!

  8. Stuv_Dogg says:

    Dude, you’re just dumb.

A’ight, I’ll agree that maybe it wasn’t such a good job by JFJ to qualify everybody under the sun. Get rid of Antropov, you can only be a prospect for so long. Get rid of Perrott and Berg, there has to be some better alternative. Christ, I’ll strap on the pads if I need to, I think I’d be an upgrade on either of those guys.

But calling Belfour over the hill? Hello? Watch sports lately? Sure, ol’ Eddie has celebrated his 40th birthday, but he had 34 wins (good for third in the league) and a 2.13 GAA with 13 shut outs. Hell, if I can still get out of bed in the morning without falling apart when I reach 40 I’ll be happy. Let’s give the man his credit, he’s kept in great shape and on top of his game, has adapted from a pure reflex goalie to a sound positional guy and it works.

Look around. Chris Chelios is 43 and still produces. Roger Clemens is 10-4 with a 1.45 ERA (are you kidding me?) and is 43 years old, also. This is the day of super-athletes, man, athletes who understand how to stay in shape and are committed to rigorous training programs.

Give ol’ Eddie a break. Let him breakdown in front of the world and post subpar numbers before you make a dumb comment like calling him over the hill.

    Sheesh.

  9. LeafBasher_BEATER says:

    what?

If he signs young guys like Zetterberg, your argument is void.

Hey, me again. This time I’m with you.

People, you want to read about things that are guaranteed? Go to http://www.nhl.com. They post news in relatively quick fashion and they’re pretty accurate in their reports.

Wanna talk about what could/might/won’t/unlikely/should/shouldn’t/can’t/better not happen? Welcome to http://www.hockeytraderumors.com.

Yeah, this site might be overrun with Leaf fans but so what? Want equal representation then speak up or get your friends to join up and make it a (insert your team name here) Nation. Until then, live with it, Toronto is a hockey town, this is a damn good website and we’re here to stay.

This just in: The Leafs have acquired Sidney Crosby, Sergei Gonchar and cash for a 14th rounder in 2031. Take that!

  11. Stuv_Dogg says:

That was so goddam funny. Did you write it yourself or did mommy help you?

You got a mirror in your house? Have a look in it. Sick of stories about the Leafs getting every free agent? Yeah, well I’m pretty sick of the ol’ sarcastic “Leafs are gonna sign everybody line”, sorta like the one in your post.

You in tight with JFJ are you? How about some other GM in the league? You best friends with some of these players agents? In other words, can you say for sure the Leafs aren’t negotiating with Lindros, Allison, Palffy, Kariya et al? No, didn’t think so.

I bet you were one of those guys who posted “The Leafs are NOT going to trade for Brian Leetch, he’s staying in New York”. How about “The Leafs are NOT going to trade for Owen Nolan”. Yet when these trades happened, you and all of your dumb buddies were eerily quiet.

Anyway, I’ve probably wasted more bytes than you’re worth so I’m outty. But really, you’re sick of dumb Leaf comments? We’re sick of dumb anti-Leaf comments. We’ll stop if you stop.

    Sucker.

  12. Stuv_Dogg says:

I don’t think they tanked on purpose. I just think they didn’t have the money to do anything under the old system.

I actually like the system, although I’d like to see the draft follow the NBA draft where the bottom team doesn’t necessarily get the top pick. This would discourage teams from purposely tanking figuring that they’d just give it a shot the next year with the top pick in hand. But if the good teams have just as good a shot at the top picks as the crap teams, then there’s no real point to trying to get good, once you’re bad you may as well just fold the franchise.

So, what would you suggest for a new system, one that doesn’t reward teams for purposeful tanking?

  13. Serdy says:

When I wrote that post, I was being somewhat sarcastic, and was afraid that people would think that I want them to tank. That is something I do not want, I wouldnt want to shame the organization. I dont think they should sign overpaid, underperforming players anymore, and instead build from within. Unfortunately we havnt been as successful as Detroit when it comes to buying players. I just want the team to get younger already…

  14. p0k3 says:

The Leafs have used 28,566,600 of 39,000,000 on 9 players. So, that leaves them about 10 mil to sign 14 more players. THINK ABOUT IT. The Leafs have a few over priced players. So the REASON the leafs have not done anything (aquire big free agents) is because they can’t afford to! I’m surprised they didn’t buy out Belfour or even Sundin! Why would they sign Zetterberg for more than he’s worth? It doesn’t make any sense, Zetterberg doesn’t want to go to the Leafs so the only thing that would bring him there is MONEY. Finacially it doesn’t work, sorry Leaf people.

  15. The_Coach says:

Well after months of only reading comments and not posting any I have finally decided to rejoin HTR.

First of all, it is nice to see that things haven’t changed around here. Titans and Burns are still morons and now we have a new clown who is trying to become their clone. What is even funnier is that this new puppet calls himself Kings_for_cup or some crap like that. This guy insults Leaf fans yet lives in some fantasy land that has the Kings even challenging for a cup.

Also, most Flyer fans on here are still clowns as well; although with Clarkes recent moves I guess that they have a reason to gloat. Let me say one thing about the Flyer signings though, why in the hell would he tie up a banged up, best days are behind him, wrecked knee, slow as the dirt defender Hatcher for 4 years???????

As for my poor Leafs, this whole Zetterburg thing is just a rumour like everything else on this site is, what in the hell is big deal. What a minute, how about we adopt a new approach, let’s wait until deals happen then report them. Ohhhhhh shoot, that doesn’t make sense, this is Hockey Trade Rumors.

Now, while everyone here is joking at the Leafs lets put something into perspective. While all these teams are stocking up on some very good veterans, they are definitely signing to them to very long contracts for players their age. We all knew that the Leafs were not going to be good this year because of JFJ’s earlier contract mistakes so why the surprise at their lack of activity now. Also, of all the teams in the NHL, the Leafs ownership is probably better placed to handle a cap then most teams because of their experience with the NBA and the Raptors. Maybe JFJ is just positioning the Leafs for next year when they will only have 11 million in cap money tied up and the crop of UFA’s will be younger and better.

Anyhow, time will time for my poor Leafs, but for now can we all please chill out and just read rumors for what they are. For the record, fans of other teams have made some pretty lame-ass posts as well.

  16. leafscrushsensintomush says:

You call me dumb. A guy that could barely play because of his back, sat out a month, is 40 years old, and makes a 4.5 million now for a guy who will be only with the leafs for one more year. Tell me I am dumb now. I am not disrespecting his skills from before, but there are goalies out there who could do just as good as him now who are younger and cheaper. His contract should of been bought out. Plain and simple. And actually yes I have been watching hockey, and probably longer than you, have you even been to a live game??? Fantasy hockey maybe. And your reference to Roger Clemens means absolutely nothing. Wrong sport, wrong type of athlete and wrong type of physical conditioning. No similarities at all. So to close who is the one with the dumb comment????

Thanks for your lack of insight. Do you watch hockey???

First of all, to the The Coach – I couldn’t have said it better myself. In addition to what you said – to all the Leafs fans – we have to learn to ignore these numbskulls who come in here trash-talking any and every comment made by us. Remember – odds are you (the Leafs fan) have been a hockey fan all of your life. You know the game, you live and breathe the game. With the exception of some fans from the Original 6 cities, the majority of those doing the trash-talking JUST DON’T GET IT – YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN…So don’t stoop to their level with the “you suck” garbage. We’re Leafs fans – and I’ve never met a fan of any team in any sport more proud to support their team (I live in Toronto but I have lived in Montreal, Calgary, NY, LA, Chicago & Minneapolis (North Stars was so much better than just Stars) so it’s not like I haven’t seen other cities’ fans). Trust me, if you stop responding to them, they will eventually shut up or maybe, just maybe, they’ll actually contribute something substantial to a thread. Now a comment on all this talk about how JFJ is an idiot…

Yes, it’s true the Leafs have a lot of money committed to a small number of players and cap space is dwindling, however, don’t forget the ability to make trades. Not dumping everyone has its merits. Who says those players who were retained aren’t trade material? Once things slow down and other teams start to realize what holes need to be filled, perhaps many of those pieces will be TML property, giving a negotiating advantage to JFJ. Maybe that’s his plan. Maybe this is JFJ’s hockey version of slow-playing your opponent. Maybe what I just said is complete BS but hey, the season is a long way away and, well, you can’t prove me wrong, can you?

    re: last two posts …

finally, some maturity displayed by two individuals who understand the purpose of HTR and of being a DIEHARD Leaf fan (or diehard fan of any team).l

LIke I have posted elsewhere, there are numeorus opportunities to make fun of other fans (especially Philly fans) but we don’t do it – or, at least, we don’t do it as much as other fans do since we don’t need to concern ourselves with non-Leaf matters.

The Leafs are hockey’s version of the Red Sox (the fans, the tradition, etc. – and, I guess, the Blackhawks are the Cubs and White Sox of hockey – hey they are all from Chicago!). so that means, someday soon, our Cupless streak will end.

  20. KingstoCup says:

I’d just like to congratulate the leafs in acquiring Brian Leetch and Owen Nolan, it did them wonders. If you were trying to brag about them signing the two of them, you might want to try again. The traded Alyn Mcauley for Nolan, i’m sure they’d die to have that trade back, and Leetch was useless. BRAVO, talk to me when the leafs have a cup

  21. TML_Fan_Since_1974 says:

Damn straight 92-93 (btw, can we get Dougie and Wendel outta retirement? Betcha they’d play for cheap) – hopefully, this will quash the trash-talking and we can get back to living out our wildest dream signings and deals through speculation – even if some of them will always just be dreams…

  22. nelsog says:

Oh my god your all back, and looking to deal Antropov once again.

FORGET IT!!! YOU ARE NOT GETTING ZETTERBERG.
