M-A Bergeron traded to the Isles

According to Hockeybuzz, defensemen Marc-André Bergeron has been traded to the Islanders in exchange of d-men Denis Grebeshkov.
Are the Oilers ready to become sellers? I think so.

This is form tsn.ca:

Grebeshkov was a first-round draft pick in 2002 and has played 33 NHL games, but is spending this season with Yaroslavl Lokomotiv in the Russian league.

The 23-year-old is expected to remain in Russia this season. He’ll be a restricted free agent this summer.

“We see the upside in the player we’re acquiring,” Oilers GM Kevin Lowe said. “We see this as a long-term upgrade.”

Bergeron had spent his entire NHL career in Edmonton. He had 33 goals and 88 points in 189 games.

they could just be clearing room to re-sign smyth

  2. PaulK123 says:

I think this does make the Oilers sellers, here are some of my proposed deals:

    1.To Detroit:
    Ryan Smyth
Conditional Draft Pick (if Detroit does not re-sign Smyth it is 4th round pick, if they do it is no pick)

    To Edmonton:
    Johan Franzen
    Jiri Hudler
    1st round draft pick

    2.To Tampa Bay:
    Dwayne Roloson

    To Edmonton:
    Marc Denis
    Ruslan Fedetenko

    3.To Toronto:
    Peter Sykora

    To Edmonton:
    Brendan Bell
    2nd round draft pick

    4.To Atlanta:
    Peter Nedved

    To Edmonton:
    Niko Kapanen

    5.To San Jose:
    Brian Smith

    To Edmonton:
    Marc-Edouard Vlasic
    Milan Michalek
    2nd round pick

This is all speculation but it is all possible.

First off, who is 'Bryan Smith'??? Are you thinking of Jason Smith???

Second, Ryan Smyth won't be dealt, and is about to sign a new long-term contract. Anybody who actually thinks he'll be moved is frickin crazy!!!

Third, I think the rest of the trades you've mentioned are pretty good, so I'll stop here.

I would be very surprised if Ryan Smyth is moved………but everyone else you've mentioned could very well be moved.

    GO OILERS GO!!!

Sorry, I am very tired………..my comments are a reply to PaulK123's comments.

  5. PaulK123 says:

ya i screwed up on that, i meant jason smith

  6. PaulK123 says:

I meant Jason Smith, Not Brian LOL

    MAB ($969,000) Grebeshkov ($0)

Could this be the precursor to a Derek Morris Trade with Horcoff and a pick going the other way?

Denis Grebeshkov looks to be on par with MAB as far as offensive talent, which means the Oilers simply traded their best offensive defenceman for another offensive defence prospect.

Best of luck to MAB, I thought he was looking better, but the Oilers system is stifling to creative offensive talents.

i really like this move for the isles, they needed the D man right now and im actually impressed with how snow has been operating the team so far, this is much better then milbury had ever done for the isles.

The move helps there defense which is very thin right now due to another injury to gervais, and helps there terrible powerplay.

They still need more scoring as always has been the case with the isles, i dont see him doing nething big, just mb though he will go get a player like smolinski from chicago or something add a lil more skill to the team.

The isles are only a move or 2 away from being able really solidify a playoff spot in east.  Teams been playing good see what they can do on the playoff push…

  9. muckies says:

Kinda useless trade for Lowe, I say Snow wins this one.

    WHAT'S WITH K-LOWE??

    SIGN FRIGGIN'  RYAN SMYTH ALREADY

You five 4 miliion to Hemsky, 3.6 to Horcoff and Rolo, 3 to Sykora but you won't give one of the best playeers in the NHL  $5 million.

I would give Ryan Smyth 6 million to play for my team. K-Lowe get your head out of your ARS and sign Ryan Smyth…….if not trade him to Ottawa.

    Edm:  Smith, Smyth
Ott:    Lee (9th overall selection), Eaves, Corvo.

  10. leaferdude2 says:

    haha.keep dreaming.everybody should because smyth'll re-sign no matter what.

  11. Oil-Life says:

you know ive been one of the edmonton gys all over bergeron this year on how he wasnt playing good and all that, but im really going to mis him now so best of luck to bergy over in long island! not nessicaraly liking the trade from the oilers point of view however just we could hae done better like packaged bergeron and a couple others for a decent defencemen. oh well best of luck to MAB in long island and all the best man!

as for ryan smyth i really hope we sign him to like we are talking about the face of the franchise and it would suck to let him go.  i would give him 6 million dollers he deserves it!  have faith oil fans it will come.

  12. baltic_thunder says:

This so means that the Oilers are packing it in. Just as well – it was getting painful. Roloson so needed help on the blueline and up front they just didn't have the 'pop'. This also means that Ryan Smith is available. This will be painful for their fans because he bled oil and was pretty much their persona. Time to retool around the likes of Hemsky and Pouliot.

  13. senators101 says:

As a Sens Fan.. Deal! I wouldnt even care if either of the two were on our team next year.  That would give us an amazing and gritty winger to play with alfy on the 2nd line and we get another phillips like defenseman to assist us with the defensive aspect.  I think it would make the sens a contendor from the east.

  14. BieksaForMVP says:

It all made sense except the last one. If Vlasic for Souray is fair, then you can't get Vlasic for Smith (Jason), and sure as hell can't get Mihalik, and a 2nd rounder.

  15. baltic_thunder says:

What are you on? Nedved is an Oiler only because no one else wanted him. Vlasic and Michalek are awesome talents and are almost untouchable. Only Sykora for Bell was intregating and made some sense. Sorry Bud but you're just shooting blanks – luckily you didn't shoot yourself in the foot..

  16. Senatorsfan78 says:

muckies I totally agree with you I would really like to se Ryan Smyth and Jason Smith both on the Ottawa Senaotrs and if I were Kevin Lowe I would do that trade in a second the Oilers get their puck moving defencemen iand power play defdcemen in Joe Corvo and they get the next Wade Redden in Brian Lee and they get Patrick Eaves who is gritty and has alot of up side to him this trade would help out both teams and Ottawa Senators would get what they have been missing to get them over the hump and Edomon Oilers would get alot for the futer I would do that trade if I were one of those GMs!!!!!!

  17. Senatorsfan78 says:

If I were the Ottawa Senators I would make a serious pitch for Ryan Smyth and then try to sign Ryan Smyth after the season end  I would love to see Ryan Smyth in a Ottawa Senators uniform!!!!!!

  18. popkumdan says:

Well this is just plain weird.  The Oilers are talking about upgrading and they trade one of their better young players for someone that isn't even playing in the NHL right now.
MAB could've ben used to bait a GM to part with a better defenceman like Brewer or Aucoin. As a life long Oiler fan i'm getting tired of seeing coaches who can't get a talented team to win or a GM who is continously trading "for the future"

Let's make our future this playoff! GO OILERS GO

  19. edmontonrules says:

The problem with the Oilers is that they always trade for younger players. Sooner or later they’re going to need to trade for experience that will help them on a run. If Lowe doesn’t pull off an amazing trade or give Smyth a sweet deal before the end of the trade deadline I’m going to be pissed. They basically gave Bergeron away. I know it doesn’t look like they’re going to make the playoffs this year but still…. you can’t throw in the towel when you’re a Canadian team.

  20. Bleeds_Oil says:

This is pretty much the end the season for the Oilers, with 3 strsit losses on the road on a road trip they pretty much needed to dominate, the trade does not surprise me at all with a million dollar price tag and time left on his contract M-A.B was a great 5-6 man with 8 goals on the season and an average of 14-16 mins a game he is a nice addition to long island. Now the ? is who is next. Jason Smith,Petr Sykora,Steve Staios,Petr Nedved,Raffi Torres who know but i dont see anyones jobs safe exept for Hempsky, Lupul, Horcoff, Pisani, Roloson and Smid. Maybe a huge salary dump?.K-lowe knows what he needs to do this off season and will try to get a pair of defenceman and another goal scoring forward this free-agentcy.

  21. Nemix says:

Im no leaf fan by any stretch of the imagination, however in retrospect.. The Kaberle/Stajan/prospect for pronger deal is probably looking awful sweet right about now

  22. TheFish12 says:

This trade is pretty much a write off for both teams.  The Islanders get a Chris Campoli clone who pretty much is a power play specialist, playing behind Sean Hill, Tom Poti and the afformentioned Campoli, whom all get the prime power play time on the Island.  The Oilers get an highly skilled russian who has yet to spend a year in the NHL and is on his 3rd team already…usually top defensive prospects arent traded this much.

The only reason I see for this trade is Lowe shedding some salary to re-sign Smyth or to make a move.  Does this mean that Edmonton will be sellers… possibly, does it mean they will trade their entire roster and rebuild… absolutely not.

  23. TheDonkey says:

This seals the deal.  Oilers will be sellers.  For a team as thin on defense as the Oilers are to go and trade a guy who can play for a guy who won't…  well let's just say that this proves that Lowe knows the Oilers season is over.

Move Sykora.  Play more young guys.  Let's see what they can do in the big leagues.  This year is over for Oiler fans.  Spend your playoff ticket money on wrestling tix.
  24. 92-93 says:

if Ryan Smyth is not resigned by the Oilers, Lowe – who is a great GM – should be fired just for that.

and if he knows he cannot resign Smyth, he better get something in return. but i think you are right, Smyth isn't going anywhere.

from what i saw last night, the Oilers are in need of a lot of things. but trading Smyth doesn't make sense at all and Lowe probably knows that.

  25. Hoondog2 says:

Did you enjoy the Leafs-Oilers game?

    Go Leafs

  26. bleedingblu says:

    I did!!

    Go Leafs

  27. bleedingblu says:

I'm sure glad Fergie didn't fall for that trade. One of his few smart moves.

  28. SabresFan220 says:

Here's a shocker, Garth Snow ripped off Kevin Lowe in a trade, ouch. I really liked Bergeron, he would've fit great with the Sabres' style of play. He's a small guy though, doesn't provide the muscle the team really needs, but he's got a great shot and skates well. The Sabres don't really need another powerplay pointman, but Bergeron would've been hard to say no to if the offer were on the table.
