Malkin, Thomas, Ribeiro, Niedermayer and Perry join the All-Star game.

These additions come due to the injuries to Crosby, Stastny and Zubov and the pulling out of the game by Brodeur and Zetterberg.

What do you think of the choices?

I like the choices, except it seems slightly unfair to other Western defensemen that Niedermayer can come in late and make it. Then again, when Mario announced his return from retirement in December 2000 he went to the game too (and was also a Hart finalist). And Niedermayer is one of the NHL’s elite defesemen, so it makes sense.

Zubov is out with a foot injury, and Stastny is sidelined after having his appendix removed last week. Zetterberg probably doesn’t want to risk a groin injury, and I’m unsure why Brodeur pulled out other than wanting to rest himself.

The result is that both Luongo and Brodeur, both voted in by the fans as the starting goaltenders, will not make appearances. So much for that anticipated battle (after Luongo destroyed Brodeur in their only NHL game this year).

I am surprised that Daniel Sedin didn’t get selected to play with his brother. Should be interesting to see what, if any, chemistry Henrik can provide with totally new linemates. Could be a good opportunity for the Canucks to scout out the future.

I’m also surprpised Kristian Huselius got left out again, and also Shane Doan who has been playing spirited hockey of late.

Malkin, now tied for 9th in NHL scoring and 7th in the East, was the obvious choice to be a replacement once Crosby went down. Interestingly, Malkin has been playing his best hockey in the NHL since that injury. He leads the League in goals this year (not season), as well, just edging out Ovechkin.

Corey Perry has been fantastic alongside Getzlaf, and is 34th in the NHL and 15th in the West in points. An interesting selection but one I personally like.

Tim Thomas, some calling a surprise choice, has the numbers to validate that choice. Good for him.

I’m especially glad the NHL finally recognized Mike Ribeiro.

As for Niedermayer, I think he is an All-Star, but it seems ‘unfair’ to other Western defensemen. Oh well. He is still pimp.

Note: I conceded that Luongo pulling out of the game isn’t selfish, so please don’t go off on me about not chastising Brodeur or Zetterberg. You guys won, let’s leave it at that.
