The Toronto Maple Leafs acquired centre David Steckel from the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday.

New Jersey will receive Toronto’s fourth-round draft pick in the 2012 NHL Entry Draft in exchange for the 29-year-old forward.

Steckel won 62.3 per cent of his faceoffs in 2010-11, leading all NHL players.

  1. KingCanada says:

Was this what all the "Burke trading for a forward" hype was about??  Rather surprised..but it makes sense.  Too many of our centers are injured and Mike Zigomanis (who was superb in the faceoff dot) did not make the team.

  2. Leafs_Wallace says:

If he becomes the next Peter Zezel then this is a steal.

  3. blaze says:

This isn't the end, might be a few weeks until the next move but Bozak is expendable now.

  4. JoelLeafs says:

Could work out in the medium term. With our centers dropping like flies, this gives us some more depth and we didn't have to give up too much.

One does have to wounder about some of the other centers future now, though.
  5. alpalstewart says:

Could the Leafs and the Oilers be the answer to each others problems, I think so. heres my proposal.

    hemsky,chorney and a 2nd for gunnarson,franson and a aulie
  6. alpalstewart says:

i think that brule off waivers is a better option than steckel, but i know why it never happened, its a little thing call 1.8 milion reasons lol

  7. KingCanada says:

Just because we have extra defencemen doesnt mean we should trade 3 of them.  But I agree Leafs/Oilers could help each other out..

I dont think Hemsky is the answer, Id prefer picks/prospect coming back for Gunnarsson.  Take our extra assets and trade them for someone less injury prone who can play in the top 6.

  8. KingCanada says:

There is a 750k difference in their salaries but thats not the reason.  Burke doesnt want Brule because he will not make the top 6 and he cannot PK.  Steckel can and is the sole reason he was brought in, that and face offs obviously.

  9. KingCanada says:

I hope your right..this Turris stuff seems to be catching some steam..but if Doan comes as well Im liking it!  At what cost tho..  Bozak, Gunnarsson and what?

  10. JoelLeafs says:

Why do people think these kids have that much trading power?I like em', especially Gunnason, but they won't fetch Turris and Doan – even if you throw in a mid pick.

Whatever, I guess anyone's guess is equally valid.
  11. Kessel_Leafs48 says:

this trade is very exciting… steckel is a very good and usefull 4th liner but thats not why im excited… as we seen in the past, burke will usually make 2 trades back to back, seen that with the phaneuf-giguere trades and the kaberle-beauchimen trades.. so ya we aquired steckel but this just has me excited for me running to the computer every 3 minutes tomorrow and seeing if hes made another trade… something to keep me occupied before the season kicks off thursday!

PS. wow connolly injured.. proves me wrong for hoping he wouldnt miss a game this season.. first game = injured
  12. assman says:

finally a move, burke stold this guy. Steckel is awesome i heard. great move. going forward

  13. toronto77 says:

it's actually a smart move. PK was our biggest disapointment in the pre-season, and burke went out and got a PK specialist. this should further avoid us from getting into an eight game slide to start the season.

  14. Leafs_Wallace says:

Gunnerson is already better than what the majority of  1st round draft picks ever become.

  15. JoelLeafs says:

Leafs must be hella dumb, because he won't be starting.

  16. toronto77 says:

i must say i do not like the leafs opening schedule. they play montreal then two nights later play ottawa, but then their off for a whole week before they play calgary. like who the hell gets a full week off, even if they get off to a great start in the first two games, it will take them out of the rythm. the flames play two very good teams to prepare for the leafs, while the leafs are just sitting around and practising, which isn't bad, especially if they lose the first two games than they can work on some stuff. you might say that the leafs get to refresh but it's the same scenerio when a team wins a playoff series 4-0 then loses the next series to a team that won their previous series 4-3. i guess it depends on how the leafs prepare.

  17. TheLeafNation91 says:

So you're getting 3 good young defencemen for a second, a guy that has not played 82 games combined in the last two seasons and an already injured defencemen whose probably worse then Komisarek (which is already hard to actually beat)

  18. alpalstewart says:

how bout trading a bad contract for a bad contract,

    horcoff for komi.
now before you say horcoff is 1.5 mil more per year, i'll say horcoff is a much better player than komi and if i'm not mistaken the leafs arent very deep at the center position and a few hurt going into the season.
just a thought as an Oilers guy i'll do it and let lander play 3rd line.
  19. reinjosh says:

No thanks. Horcoff is more expensive, for longer term for a guy that has been just as bad as Komisarek on a relative scale. Horcoff would just add another potential (at this point he isn't even a top 6 center) top 6 center when what we really need is a top line center or winger.

How about Komisarek for Ryan Jones.
  20. reinjosh says:

He's going to be playing with Phaneuf…

  21. reinjosh says:

Haha, Elliote Friedman is awesome. He's called himself out for an idiotic comment on the Malone headshot thing (not sure what he said but he said it was idiotic). But that's not the great part. His exact words as to why he may have made an idiotic comment?

"Maybe it was because PJ was nearby and I became an airhead by osmosis"
  22. reinjosh says:

Interestingly, Avery's demotion might make Dallas go under the cap floor.

  23. mojo19 says:

    haha, that's hilarious.

  24. mojo19 says:

Ya Gunner will be playing with Dion. And ya, Gunner is what 24 years old? This is what you're hoping draft picks turn into (well, you hope for superstars) but realistically if you can get a legitimate top 4 d-man you're doing well.

Like I've said, I'm not big on trading Gunner, but in a trade for an impact forward it could make sense.

  25. mojo19 says:

Steckel is the big 6'5" centerman we were lacking. I hated the size of our forwards. I think this move and adding a big winger would go a long way and translate into some wins this year.

  26. reinjosh says:

Exactly. Trading him just to free up a spot on the team or for picks/prospects makes little sense.

If we're all just a little patient, things will work themselves out and we won't have to worry about having to many dman.
  27. mojo19 says:

Scott Hartnell comes to mind. But I think with the dirty trick Philly is playing with Schenn (1 game in the AHL and they don't have to pay him $1+ million in bonuses) they might not need to make any other moves.

Brendan Morrow isn't too tall, but he would be ideal as an impact power forward, but the cost to get him, if he's even available could be a ton, including Kadri, Gunnarsson and maybe a pick.

Ben Eager in Edmonton could be a possibility since they're looking for a d-man back, but he's hardly an upgrade on Rosehill and doesn't add enough to the roster to make it worthwhile. Other Oilers include Smyth, or Horcoff but they're expensive contracts (and lengthy in the case of Horcoff) make them tough to trade for. I would go for Smyth for a year, but the Oilers just brought him back and probably wanna keep him. He could be a deadline rental though when Edmonton is out of it.

Shane Doan is on an expiring contract on a team that has Mike Smith/Labarbera in goal. They could be hard pressed to make the playoffs and could deal their long time captain at some point this season, probably closer to the deadline.

LA just signed Trent Hunter, 1 year $600K. This guy would've been ideal. He's consistantly in the 30-40 point range is a really solid grinder. We're paying Armstrong 5x that amount and he's not that much better. Those two coulda been a good line. But I digress…

If Wojtek Wolski, who was shopped all summer, is still up for grabs, he could be a great fit. He's big, can score, and would cost us a d-man that the NYR sorely need. Wolski could play anywhere from the Kessel/Connolly line, down to a Bozak/Armstrong line and fit in. Another Ranger is Center Brian Boyle, at 6'7" he would be a presence. Not the most skilled guy but drive to the net and score some garbage, should be good for 15-20 goals.

Ryan Malone could probably still be had, but the only way I would want him would be for Komisarek, because I wouldn't want to pick up that Malone contract. Can't imagine the bolts would want Komi with Brewer, Hedman, Ohlund, Kubina, Clark, Bergeron, Gervais and Gilroy, they have a pretty solid and deep blueline.

Mike Knuble is a guy I like in Washington. We'll see if he slips off the top two lines this year in favour of this 6: Ovechkin, Backstrom, Semin, Laich, Chimera, and young gun Johanssen. They also have Joel Ward who could play that support role on a 2nd line. Knuble could be a nice bandaid, 1 year contract. Don't think he's available but I don't think you'd have to pry too hard to get him.

  28. mojo19 says:

Just wanna point out, from a NJ standpoint this made sense because they're trying to get Sykora under contract after he had a terrific camp. Even though they had the cap space they didn't have the actual dollars to sign a new player to a contract so they had to move someone out.

  29. reinjosh says:

Brett MacLean is on waivers. That's a shocking move. Apparently something's gone bad with the organization and he told Phoenix to put him on waivers if they couldn't or wouldn't find a trade.

He's a big scoring left wing, at least at the AHL level.
He's almost exactly what we need. He just hasn't had the most successful transition to the NHL level yet but really hasn't been given a chance.
Grab him (if we even have the contract limit availability)?
  30. mojo19 says:

33 year old center who is only 5'9" and whose career high for points is 40 a few years back with the Avs.

This guy would not be an upgrade on Dupuis in my opinion.

  31. reinjosh says:

MacLean is 6 foot 2 and 22 years old.

In his final year in the OHL he put up 61 goals in 61 games, in the AHL last year he put up a PPG and 30 goals. Guy know hows to score and has developed pretty well. He just hasn't been given a shot in the NHL.
  32. blaze says:

Couldn't hurt, I'm sure he'd be an upgrade over someone on the Marlies. I don't know if 6-1/6-2, 200 is really that big, it's still decent though. Why not? It's hard to overlook any potential talent at this point.

  33. leafmeister says:

Marc Staal out for longer than expected. The Rangers are not gonna wanna risk a slow start on what is supposed to be a big season; maybe they step up on Gunnarsson.

  34. mojo19 says:

I guess its not the same Brett MacLean I'm thinkin of

  35. mojo19 says:

oh, this is Mac, I'm thinking of Mc

  36. mojo19 says:

Ya couldn't hurt. I mean, we just Caputi clear waivers, they're similar age, size, and upside, but it woudnt hurt to add another. More organizational depth I guess.

  37. mojo19 says:

Gunnarsson for Wolski and a 3rd.

Gunnarsson and Bozak for Boyle, Wolski and a 4th.

  38. alpalstewart says:

with the future looking very weak on the flames. you might want to throw Rene Bourque on your list. bourque for gunnerson, colborne and a 3rd. gives a top 6 power foward with size. another name to throw out is R.J Umberger, i dont really know much of the situation in columbus but i cant imagine the price for him would be huge, and he's in my mind the same type with the same size as bourque

  39. alpalstewart says:

both of those guys are $4mil plus, so i'm sure you guys will have komi coming back for either of them lol

  40. KingCanada says:

When I read the aforementioned post I KNEW someone would pick Maclean before the Leafs got the chance…  The Jets finished 5 pts lower in the standings then us last year so they got to claim before the Leafs.
