Completely agree someone is going to over pay Lombardi. He's a decent 2nd line guy and should be 3-4 million over a 3-4 year term.

The trade at the draft was Kaberle Kulemin for Perry and a 2nd but Burke didn't want to give up Kaberle and Kulemin for 1 player.  This way Anaheim gets Neal to replace Perry and they get a good defenseman in Beauchemin. And Burke gets a forward and a 1st.

Leafs shouldn't bother with him.  Use the money elsewhere – he's not going to sign anywhere on a 1 year contract.  Leafs are better off going with Bozak/Kadri as 1-2 centres.  The UFA centres next year are a much better crop (Thornton, Bergeron, Richards).  Lombardi had a career year this year and he got 53 points (Stajan's beaten that total twice), before that a couple years at 46 points.  Leafs would be better off keeping Grabovski at those numbers.  And looking at size alone, with similar statures of Bozak, Kadri, and Grabovski – there's no pressing need to bring in Lombardi at the same size.

Yes, Lombardi is much better defensively, but if you sign him based on that – then what do you do next year when some serious top-line centres are available?  You'd have Lombardi/Bozak/Kadri/Grabovski (baring trades).

If they trade Grabovski, and if they don't think Kadri will make the team or they expect him to play wing, then Lombardi could be decent.  But best case scenario is that you'll be using his defensive skills as a third line centre next year, so the salary should reflect that.

I just made a list of a roster I'd like to see that isn't an impossibility IMO.

Dido's injury will be the telling tale in whether or not he can ever hit his stride again(no pun intended) look a Kurtis Foster he's had the same injury and he's never been the same since his. So for a player like Dido who depended on his speed so heavily to have it now sapped from his game i don't know if he can overcome that. That being the case the trade would go down as KV for VS and BS for PP with Dido as a "throw in". God I hope this doesn't come back to bite our tails
