Maple Leafs should make another draft day splash

John Ferguson’s two trades of most consequence were on draft day, with his other trade acquisitions Ron Francis, Brian Leetch, Luke Richardson, and likely Yanic Perreault all left during the off season. Those trades of course being the acquisitions of Andrew Raycroft and Jeff O’Neill.
“Sluggo” of the Maple Leafs forums, and from his name and writing style, I believe also of Wow Hockey, suggested traded Kyle Wellwood and our first round pick to move up in the draft.

The trade would have to be the acquisition of a first round pick. With all due respect to Kyle Wellwood, we have enough future second liners. Tlusty and Kuleminen are likely second liners. The only Leafs prospect I can see with any first line potential is Jeremy Williams. We need a first liner, and one young center has dropped off enough in the draft enough for us to take a run at him.

Angelo Esposito. He was a sure fire 1st overall last year, but now the ISS rankings have him at number 11. If we can make a deal to move up in the draft do it. This kid will be good, and we’re incredibly lucky to see him drop off.
