Maple Leafs Sign Chris Harrington

Before you all say “who!?!”, here is some info on him.

He was the captain of the University of Minnesota Golden Gopher (NCAA).

Harrington, a 23-year-old native of St. Cloud, Minnesota, played in 40 games for the Golden Gophers this past season, and earned a career-high 36 points (three goals, 33 assists). Harrington was Minnesota’s team captain in his fourth and final season at the school.

Harrington won a national championship with the Golden Gophers and was a WCHA All-Rookie selection in the 2002-03 season. In 129 career games at Minnesota, Harrington earned 109 points (14 goals, 95 assists) along with 264 career penalty minutes.

Harrington’s father, John, played on the 1980 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team, which won the gold medal.

He is by all rights a solid defenceman, and since he is being signed and not drafted, there is really no downside to this deal.

  3. Marky2Fresh says:

I’m not sure. he’s 23 and out of the NCAA so I guess he’ll have to play for the Marlies.

  4. Aetherial says:

Someone is going to have to since, I see a number of marlies being up with Maurice full time this year.

i never heard of this guy, but if you watched him play, what kind of defencemen in the NHL does he remind you of?

They’re doing a good job by signing the college kids. I can’t afford to play a high level of hockey, and I’ve always hoped to join a good college team and make it that way, however unlikely.

Anyways, Mike Illitch once said he told the GM to go sign the top ten college players in the country, and one of them turned out to be future hall of famer Adam Oates, so not a bad signing at all.

And I’ve actually heard of John Harrington.

Martin St.Louis, Manny Legace and Mike Johnson, all examples of the possiblity of finding a diamond in the rough in the college system.
