As expected, the Maple Leafs captain has inked a new seven-year deal believed to be in the $49 million range.

“Dion is our team leader and has been a pillar in our building process,” general manager Dave Nonis said in a statement. “He has proven to be a very durable and reliable defenceman in all facets of the game.

“ He plays big minutes in every situation for us and we’re pleased to have him under contract for the next seven seasons.”

Phaneuf welcomed the opportunity to stay with the Leafs well into his mid-30s.

“This is a very proud day for me and my family,” said Phaneuf. “I’m very honoured to be the captain of this historic franchise and to maintain the opportunity to play and represent the Toronto Maple Leafs for many years to come.

    I don’t like it.

I accepted this deal a long time ago. He is better then most fans give him credit for. He is not nor ever will be a Norris winner, but is a top pairing dman.

I like Dion, don’t like the contract (just like Clarkson). I am not worried about the next 2-3 years…it’s about the last 3-4. I just have a feeling we will be paying a second pairing D-man $7mil and I just don’t buy into that in 4 years, second pairing D-men will be making $7mil…should I expect 3rd pairing D to be making $5mil by then? Having a hard time believing the cap hype which gives me concern.

If he’s our top defenseman to build our future championship team around (assuming that is management’s goal), I’m not optimistic at all.

But if we eventually (or develop) a bona fide No. 1, then that changes things.

too much, woulda liked to have dealt him at the deadline for a young dman and a 1st rounder. But whatever, not like Dion’s useless.

Ya would’ve been interesting to know what may or may not have been given up to get him. But he is a proven high level guy and it isn’t the worst contract in the league. Cap is going up and the team is going to get better. Who knows if the fans keep in check it may turn out better then all think?

The “C” is quite possibly the biggest reason for over criticisms of Dion. I remember there was a huge contingent of Leafs fans who never warmed up to Mats Sundin. I think there are a lot of expectations with that “C”.
