Maple Leafs Sign Three

John Ferguson J. announced Wednesday that the leafs have signed Jeremy Williams and Derrik Walser to two year contracts. And Alex Foster to a one year contract.

Williams, 23, spent time last season with the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Toronto Marlies of the American Hockey League (AHL). He has the distinction of being the only player in NHL history to play in just two games and score in both. The Regina, Saskatchewan native played 23 games for the Marlies, recording 15 points (six goals, nine assists) with 27 penalty minutes. Williams was Toronto’s fifth choice, 220th overall, in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.

Foster, 22, split last season between the Marlies and the Columbia Inferno of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). In 57 games with the Marlies he collected 17 points (eight goals, nine assists) with 31 penalty minutes. He played nine games with the Inferno collecting 11 points (one goal, 11 assists) with six penalty minutes. The Bowling Green alumnus was signed as a free-agent by the Maple Leafs on March 8, 2006.

Walser, the Canadian Major Junior Defenceman of the Year in 1998, split last season between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Syracuse Crunch of the AHL. He played nine games for the Blue Jackets collecting two goals and in another 49 games with the Crunch collected 36 points (nine goals, 27 assists) with 59 penalty minutes. The native of New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, has played in 91 career NHL games collecting 29 points (eight goals, 21 assists) with 56 penalty minutes.

Walser is 1 way, i know that, but how about Foster and Williams?

  2. uniackesquare says:

Williams better make the team this season.

  3. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

Williams and Foster are 2 way contracts. so JFJ has 26 players with one way contracts. my guess is Walser, Kronwall, harrison will start the season in the minors.

  4. Glucker says:

doubt he will… unless he impresses big time at training camp… Blake & Bell forced him off the Depth chart, and if we get Peca back, he's even further off. it's too bad… he's like Lemieux… first game, first shift, first goal… just not sure if it was on his first shot. Unlike Lemieux though… 2nd game, 2nd shift, 2nd goal XD

note: I am not saying Williams is better, just kidding around

  5. Glucker says:

harrison is 2 way I believe

  6. uniackesquare says:

Leafs and Avs have agreed on a deal. More coming soon.

  7. LEAFS877 says:

You're source though? and when do u think this is gonna go down

  8. xclaimrapgame says:

This is most likely nothing. I'd love to think it's true but common.

    *Crosses Fingers*
    Common Hejduk!

  9. xclaimrapgame says:

IMO Williams @ Walser are good pickups for the Marlies. Williams will be a good future NHL player. I see second line forward later on in him.

  10. toronto77 says:

Williams is definatly ready for the big club.

  11. pennell_723 says:

hejduk for coliacovo and a late pick in 08

  12. toronto77 says:

  16. Glucker says:

    …pecafan/thesource? is that you?

  17. Glucker says:

    Antropov Sundin Ponikarovsky
    Tucker Wellwood Blake
    Steen Stajan Kilger
    Deveraux Pohl Battaglia

who leaves? I guess Battaglia and Deveraux are expendable…

  18. FarFromFreedom says:

i doubt it .. I'll believe it when i see it in sportsnet or tsn .. without any sources .. its too hard to believe.

  19. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

nope, 1 way. i know that for a fact

  20. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

    new trade rumor

apparently a deal that would include Kubina going to Chicago for Vandermeer and some picks is in the works.

  21. m4gician says:

that might work, but then again it may not. I want something to appear on hockeybuzz, the fan, sportsnet, or TSN before I believe anything because I won't believe anything from that midget retard

Steve Simmons aka THE SOURCE / AKA whoever.

  22. BLUE_AND_WHITE says:

eklund aint any more reliable. the most reliable sources are still only right about 30% of the time

  23. brianc689 says:

  25. leafs_for_life_2007 says:

isn't Vandermeer the guy that hit Peca and knocked him out last year?

and do you have a source for this?

  27. lukeleim says:

i doubt this trade will happen considering maurice said after the peca hit vandermeer was a minor league player.

trade Matt Stajan and Andy Wozniewski to Colorado for Marek Svatos

  30. leafs_for_life_2007 says:

    sources for the Vandermeer-Kubina trade?

and why does EVERYBODY have their top line as:

    Ponikarovski — Sundin — Antropov

Ponikarovski and Antropov are NOT top line players. Jason Blake was signed to play with Sundin, and expect someone like Steen, Wellwood or Tucker to be on the other side. Poni and Antropov are 3rd line players at BEST. Even putting Bell with Sundin and Blake would be a solid top line.

  31. lukeleim says:

actually maurice said in a recent interview that he had planned on playing jason blake with kyle wellwood… torontomapleleafs.com

  32. lukeleim says:

they have to go through waivers before they get sent down. I doubt JFJ will risk kronwall getting picked up, though probably would consider allowing harrison and walser free.

  33. lukeleim says:

Possible Trades and Transactions the Toronto Maple Leafs could pursue:

Carlo Colaiacovo and Nik Antropov to Carolina Hurricanes for Erik Cole

Carlo Colaiacovo to the Colorado Avalanche for Marek Svatos

Hal Gill to the ??? for 3rd or 2nd-round draft pick

    Sign Alyn McCauley
    Sign Mike Johnson
    Sign Michael Peca

Carlo Colaiacovo, Robbie Earl and Staffan Kronwall to the Colorado Avalanche for Milan Hejduk

trade Pavel Kubina, Chad Kilger and Jeremy Williams to Chicago Blackhawks for Tuomo Ruutu

  34. 92-93 says:

i dunno about the trade rumours and proposals above, but i do know that signing Jeremy Williams is a good move.

i hope he makes the team this year but at some point, eventually, he'll get called up, play more than one game and will show his talent. to me he is another Wellwood-Steen kind of player, won't be a top-line talent but a definite threat to be a solid and dangerous top-6 forward, even if no one was talking about him before he got into the NHL (re: hockeysfuture.com).

  35. lukeleim says:

Carlo Colaiacovo, Andy Wozniewski and Jeremy Williams to the Carolina Hurricanes for Erik Cole

Nik Antropov, John Pohl, Hal Gill, Robbie Earl and the Leafs' 2nd round pick of 2008 to the Chicago Blackhawks for Tuomu Ruutu and Brent Seabrook

Alexei Ponikarovsky – Mats Sundin – Erik Cole
