Marchant wants Buffalo?

Of course this is just a rumor, but the word around the Sabres is they very interested in signing local boy Todd Marchant. Todd Marchant mentioned Buffalo as one place he would like to go as a free agent over the summer. He’s always played well against the Sabres, and it’s been a dream of his to play as a Sabre. Marchant would provide great depth and leadership skills in a mostly young locker room. He is a possible candidate for team captain as well. Just the news of his signing with the team would sell tickets simply because he’s from Buffalo, his production would also sell alot of tickets. His role as a defensive centerman would free up Curtis Brown from his defensive role and allow him to concentrate more on offense. Marchant is also an excellent penalty killer and good faceoff man. He could garner offers up to 3 million over the summer. I would expect the Sabres to offer him a figure around that.

Well, today i have read that the Sabres, Regier and Golisano’s nod, may look to make some changes and one that was mentioned was bringing in mid-level free agents, Marchant’s group.

I think they should definitely give it a shot. Marchant is young and the Sabres will add an expert role player and they add depth as well.

Another thing i heard is that they may be willing to trade their 5th overall. With 5th overall, there is a star you draft. It may be Tomas Vanek, Michalek…who knows. But, it’s a greta pick.

Thing is, the Sabres would be looking to get a 1st round in return and a ready to play top prospect. Which tells me that i would not be so sure if i’d trade Lundmark and the 12th overall to get the 5th overall and pick Tomas Vanek. It’s a tough call.

But, i think this is where the Sabres will take advantage of their status and i don’t think they’ll be all that bad next season, not one bit. However, they should stick with their 5th overall and draft Tomas Vanek, who’ll do wonders for them.

I like what the sabres did at the trade deadline, this team will definately be in the playoffs next year. Of course i think they’ll make a run at Marchant, but so will everyone else. Be good if he ended up in Buffalo.

I really doubt that he will go to Buffalo. He’s going to stay with the Oilers. Or at least go to a place where he would have a chance at the cup. Buffalo won’t be going there anytime soon. But then again the Oilers…………… well they sadly won’t either.

i don’t see him going anywhere. however, if i were buffallo i would do that. Have satan and that rookie on the first line. with the new ownership and the possibility of a trade with philly with biron they could bring in some good young guys.

  5. mikster says:

What makes you think they’ll definitely make the playoffs?

  6. mikster says:

Problem is that Philly fans they think they will just get Biron with draft picks. In their dreams.

Should be interesting to see who he is traded to and what for if it happens. Of course they could decide that since rotating goalies worked well for Minnesota they’d one up them and do a triple rotation this year.

Personally, unless it’s for only a midround pick, I’d rather go after other goalies.

Buffalo is still many years away from a shot at the cup. They don’t have a solid core of veterans yet.Marchant is going to have offers from many teams that will have a greater shot at playing for the cup,but if Buffalo does more signing other then Marchant they they might have a shot at him.All this has to be done around taking care of their own UFA.A small market team that was bankrupt last year is not very tantalizing to most.

A dream to be a Sabre????? Geeze, this guy sure is easy to please.

  10. MossRocks says:

$3million for Marchant?!?!?!?!?! That is pure insanity. The guy is only 30, but he’ll never be anymore than a 20-goal, 50-60point man. Of course he brings a lot of other tools to the table, but not $3million worth. Do the Sabres even have $3million to throw at a grinder? Who cares if he’s from Buffalo – it doesn’t matter. I hope the Sabres don’t make any sentimental mistakes. He certainly won’t hurt the team but he might chew up resources that could be better spent. (Then again – he could have a Peca-like effect on that team, but you can’t hope for that realistically.)

The Oilers will probably not sign this guy. They would be a better team if they did, but they have Stoll and Reasoner ready to take his spot and they could spend that money better elsewhere. He won’t sign with Edmonton for $2.4million – which is all they can afford to offer.
