Massive changes in store for the Penguins

Okay, things sucked in Toronto this season…but the tweak-build is not as terrible as it was when Burke came in.

    The Leafs have:

    – 2/3 of a very good top-line (JVR and Kessel)
    – 2 bluechip prospects on the back-end (Reilly and Gardiner)
    – A blue-chip, most likely, very good goaltender (Bernier)

    Looking at prospects:

    – None are blue-chip or high-end, but they do have great depth at all positions…A few might be second-line, but most will be capable third-line guys.

I wonder if Malkin is available? If so, use the assets you can get from Phaneuf and entice Pittsburgh to Pittsburgh…Add Malkin to JVR and Kessel and the Leafs have the easy-part of adding complimentary talent.

Also, move Bozak to the 2nd-line spot and maybe Holland or possibly Gauthier (if he impresses) to the third-line.

Obviously, the loss of Phaneuf will hurt…But the Leafs have some pieces (will take 300 games to evaluate like Carlye said) of a good D.

A tweak-build with some smart moves is very do-able, I agree. Too bad the coach is a melon head.

  2. lafleur10 says:

unless you moving one of reilly or gardiner and or bernier + other stuff, plus jvr your not getting malkin simple as that ,what you get for phaneuf won’t be good enough to entice the penguins …malkin is a franchise player and a supersatr and arguably one of top 3 players in the game and the leafs don’t have the stuff it would take to land him

    • Steven_Leafs0 says:

Unless of course if you are the Habs which means Beaulieu and Eller would get it done.

      I missed ya Lafleur.

      • lafleur10 says:

look here you goof i didn’t mention anything abut the habs and if you can’t keep it on the current topic then don’t reply he said he wondered what it would take from the leafs and i said what i felt it would take ass if you can’t comphrehend that then don’t reply period!

      • leafs_wallace93 says:

Do you think the Pens could package Malkin, Letang and Crosby for Subban’s rights?

        • lafleur10 says:

what do you think by the turd? do you think the laffs could package bozak lupul, mcclement or malkin

          • leafs_wallace93 says:

I used to think that package might land Rick Nash but he’s enjoying quit the resurgence in these semi finals.

        • Steven_Leafs0 says:

No where near enough, eat half if all of their salaries and then we have a starting point.

          • leafs_wallace93 says:

Ha, seriously though, Crosby for Price straight up? Bet he wouldn’t do it.

            • Steven_Leafs0 says:

No chance a Crosby will ever get you one of the Habs’ generational talent.

  3. lafleur10 says:

do you think the laffs could package bozak, lupul, and mclement for malkin /
that’s about the extent of the leafs fans offers!

  4. toronto77 says:

    Great performance by Bibeau!

The leafs last 3 drafts have been really impressive!

’08 there is no one left and Schenn was the last one and we traded him for JVR which wasn’t too bad

’09 and ’10 were ok but ’11 ’12 and ’13 were really good.

and I’m curious to see how those players play out

    ’11

Biggs- is developing slowly but could be a really good physical 2/3 winger
Percy- could be an excellent top 4 d-man, he has under rated skill and physicality and is very calm
Leivo – was a steal. He will be a great 2/3 power forward and brings a little bit of everything and is an important player that teams need in their bottom 6 to go far in the playoffs
Broll- looks like he could be a very good bottom 6 power forward. He could be really good on the 4th line which is an under rated line and the new NHL is starting to prove that you need a 4th line that can compete and not just fight
Sparks- Looks like an interesting goalie and could be a steal from the 7th round, will need more time to develop

    ’12

Rielly – looks like the next Niedermayer
Finn – a lot like Percy is very under rated and shows great leaderships skills with the Storm, he is starting to prove why he should have been taken in the 1st round
Connor Brown – is a steal!! an amazing OHL season! don’t know if he could play in the NHL next season, though he is extremely talented and mature I don’t think he has the size to play in the NHL yet, looks like a really good 2/3 winger
Ryan Rupert – another great bottom 6 winger! Could play on the 4th line with Broll, that would be a great pairing!

    ’13

Gauthier – is an interesting centremen, he has the size maturity and 2-way ability to be a prototypical no.1 C but his lack of skill would make him out to be a no.3 C. Still a good gamble
Verhaeghe – is really talented and could be a really could no.2 C and could replace Kadri if he doesn’t play better defensively and we choose to move him.
Bibeau – is looking like he could be a really good no.1 goalie. Bernier has the talent to be a stanley cup winning goalie and is young enough to be a no.1 goalie for the next 10- 15 years. Having said that I don’t know if Bibeau ever plays for the leafs. I guess when he is ready to make the NHL he will fight for the no.1 spot with Bernier and trade the lesser. Either way this pick was huge for the leafs!

Leafs don’t have any blue chip prospects outside of Rielly who already made the team but they have a lot of great depth and options, really under rated drafting in the last 3 years!

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

Yet all I ever read is how Toronto has a garbage farm system in lack luster prospects and how terrible our scouts are for trading the pick that became Gibson (ignoring all the other teams that past on him) to get Biggs.

Toronto is the worst farm system because…. it’s the only farm system people actually pay attention too.

    • nordiques100 says:

I’ve already mentioned it already that the majority of their prospects are just finishing their 1st year as a pro or are still in Junior.

Unfortunately not all prospects are like say Nathan MacKinnon, who will run away with the Calder trophy as an 18 year old.

Reilly was the only teen really capable of playing at the NHL level.

Not every single one of the prospects will turn out, but, they have some intriguing pieces, moreso than previous years.

      • LN91 says:

And the core forwards and some of the most prized D are young…

Toronto has great depth and role players, they ave no high-end…Which is not a glaring need with Kessel and JVR.

However, I like how Nonis/Shanahan have said they are moving from taking ‘safe’ picks (which they have) to riskier picks. The depth is their, time to take huge risks with their drafting. Not all will pan out, but a couple could be major hits!

        • kessel_leafs81 says:

like ehlers… risky but could be a star

          • LN91 says:

Something about Denmark does not really entice me.

Virtanen or Nylander are the boom/bust options.

            • nordiques100 says:

              something too about small wingers.

preferably they do take Virtanen who is big and can play centre or wing.

he isnt your typical centre, as he is more a sniper, but hey Jeff Carter is like that and he’s turned out ok.

              • LN91 says:

Virtanen is also one of the youngest players in the draft…He’s not a safe pick by any means.

                Nylander is risky as well.

  5. leafs_wallace93 says:

Anyone like Kapanen? Not sure if I’d want to go euro if Ritchie is still on the board.

Have done a complete 180 on Ritchie but my gut is saying that he is taken at 6 or 7

    • TmLeafan says:

I really doubt the Canes draft Ritchie at 7. Possibility Van takes him at 6 though. Kapanen doesn’t seem to have elite potential. Nylander is one that intrigues me for sure. Apparently up there with the top guys in terms of offensive ability.

Draft pick is a a bit of a crapshoot in the end of the day. Lot of luck involved. Everyone applauds the Blackhaws for picking Brandon Saad. They picked 3 guys before him that they obviously had them ranked higher. Hoping we strike gold at 8 huge possibility for a major piece.

Seems like there is more of an opportunity to move up this year than previous ones. Someone like Draisatl could drop out of the top 5 and drop to the Islanders they could be looking to make a deal.

      • leafs_wallace93 says:

Was thinking NYI but given their still building and they don’t have a pick next year I see them adding a top five pick.

        • leafmeister says:

They really need D, and really need to make the playoffs next year. They could offer something pretty significant for Dion at the draft. What kind of package would you be after? I’d go for Brock Nelson + the 5th.

          • leafs_wallace93 says:

Sorry HFboards has brainwashed me to believe that Phaneuf isn’t an NHL player but rather a mutant strain of influenza. A top five pick in a deep draft is the only way to contain this viral infection.

            • leafmeister says:

I don’t think he sucks. I just don’t think he is right for the team. Brock Nelson and the 5th overall pick would do much more for this team by the time they can realistically compete.

  6. LN91 says:

Okay, I believe everyone is starting to see why people dislike Montreal. All they do is whine, and pretty much do the things they whine about.

Brandon Prust and Therrien crying about Kreider…Yet, Prust ran Lundqvist in Game 2…Not to mention Weaver and Prust having questionable hits on Stepan/Brassard knocking them both out.

Think about this, Lucic only disrespected 2 franchises…Vancouver and Montreal…Because all they do is play dirty and whine when teams do it to them.

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

Lucic was the first interview after the Leafs game 7 collapse and the first thing out of his mouth was how great Toronto played throughout the series and that they were lucky to win. Class act in my book.

      • LN91 says:

I should be hating Lucic as he and Krejci were the only reason the Bruins won that series…But he played well, was respectful and it was a great series between the two.

Once again, Lucic is hated in Montreal and Vancouver…Because he went after 2 franchises that are classless and whine about opposing teams.

      • toronto77 says:

Another class act I think is Brad Marchand! You listen to this guy in interviews and he shows nothing but respect, another classy guy. He brings his tool box to work and leaves it all on the ice when the game is over and goes about his normal life.

      • lafleur10 says:

lucic is far from a class act act the guy the most gutless cowardly piece of shit around ! if you call spearing guys in the nuts classy

    • toronto77 says:

THANK YOU!!! This team is the biggest bunch of whinny babies in the league and hope they lose this series. Remember when the leafs destroyed the habs in one of the regular season games last year and it was getting a little out of hand in the end and there was a scrum and Pacioretty covered his bare hand over Grabovski’s face and wouldn’t let up and Grabo bit him. Pacioretty, Georges and Price were bitching so much after the game and didn’t want anyone to look at the embarrassing score and just trying to make the leafs the bad guys. Even Cherry said Pac shouldn’t of covered Grabo’s face, what was he supposed to do if he couldn’t breathe?

An annoying little brother that thinks they’re equals.

        • 93killer93 says:

I still remember watch that game and just laughing at the fact that Mclaren is just standing there with a big smile on his face, while Gorges is trying to punch his teeth in.

          • lafleur10 says:

and i remeber prust wanting to go with mclaren and he wouldn’t drop the gloves with him prust would’ve destroyed him ,so malrane chosen the gutless way out and took on a smaller in gorges….a real tough guy mclaren is h’es a pussy prust would’ve handed him his ass!

      • lafleur10 says:

grabovski should’ve fought pacioretty instead of biting like a sissy …but he knows pacioretty would’ve beat the living hell out of him so he had to bite like a girl!

  7. leafs_wallace93 says:

Didn’t realize this till now, TJ Brennan had 72 points in 76 games for the Marlies this year and is a pending UFA. Anyone else want to give him Paul Ranger’s million and try him in the 7 spot?

    • blaze says:

Randy already has to deal with Gardiner and Rielly another pure offensive D would give him a stroke.

Leafs offer Dion + 8th overall for Ekblad???

    Ekblad – Rielly
    Gunnersson – Gardiner
    Gleason – Franson
    Brennan, Granberg

Retool for season and chase McDavid and Eichel, rebuild complete.

    • kessel_leafs81 says:

Anybody else think dion + the 8th overal pick is a little much for ekblad? and say we do lose dion for something like ekblad that will make is better in the long run but worse next year, chase for mcdavid? i just can’t see or want this team losing next so bad that we end up with the 1st overal pick. I’d rather move next years first, keep our pick at 8th which looks like theres going to be high upside big forwards available and hope next year we get into playoffs and it end up being a late first and phaneuf. If we do give up phaneuf for ekblad I do want to see us going hard after a top 6 FA forward tho, I think it could be a very quick turn around.

      • leafs_wallace93 says:

It’s an overpayment for sure, would be just has happy to see Phaneuf moved for another top ten pick and smaller assets.

Though if Ekblad and Rielly hit there ceilings in Leafs jersey, that could be historically something special for this franchise. Love to see management swing for the fences.

        • TmLeafan says:

I agree 100 percent how about we deal Lupul for either Phoenix or Nashville 1st round picks.

Say Florida takes Ekblad Edmonton would possibly cosider moving their pick. Offer Phaneuf plus the 11th or 12 pick for number 3. Take Sam Bennett.

Then take either Ritchie, Virtanen or Nylander with our pick.

Mini rebuild but that lineup has the potential to be stacked in a few years.

  10. blaze says:

Move the pick in part of package for Evander Kane.

Defense is a priority but Kessel and JVR played 4th and 5th most minutes of any forwards last year.

Adding a real threat to anchor the second line would help take the reliance of the top line.

  11. leafy says:

    Marty St. Louis!

Hats off to Montreal though. Almost everybody wrote them off after losing Carey Price and Game one 7-2. Tonight they came within a goal post of sending this series back to Montreal tied 2-2.

  12. leafy says:

The playoffs are too friggin long. Should be about 6 weeks max. Most people lose interest after the first round anyway. Problem is there’s too many teams.

    • LN91 says:

I like it, the problem is the long breaks in between games…3 days break is quite a long wait eh?

      • leafy says:

That will only save a few days. Not really a solution. The root of the problem is there’s too many damn teams.

        • kessel_leafs81 says:

I like how many teams there are which allows for more upsets and surprises in the playoffs, If we shorten the playoffs I wouldnt mind seeing best out of 5 for the first two rounds and then 7 for the conference finals and finals.

  13. TmLeafan says:

    Tor:12th overall pick, Brandon Gormley
Phoenix: Tyler Biggs, Tor 1st pick 2015, Tor 3rd rd pick

    Tor: 3rd overall pick
Edm: 12th overall pick, Dion Phaneuf

Leafs take Bennet, Oilers take Haydyn Fleury.

Tor: Evander Kane, 2nd round pick
WPG: 8th overall pick, Cody Franson, James Reimer, Frederik Gauthier.

    Tor: Trevor Daley
    Dallas: Joffrey Lupul

Daley is legit and has a great contract. Lupul has been replaced by Kane and he has a tendency to be soft, we have enough offense.

Take Sam Bennett with 3rd overall pick. Him and Kane are 2 forwards that could be elite. That’s what you need to win a championship. Scouts are saying Bennet looks like Toews in his draft year.

  14. leafy says:

I think I’m the only one here who thinks Phaneuf has negative value. Unless we eat a significant portion of his salary, and I mean a lot, teams aren’t moving the top 3 picks in the draft for Phaneuf, even with the 8th pick, in my view.

    • leafy says:

      I hope I’m wrong.

    • LN91 says:

Does Phaneuf have negative value? Probably, as he’s an inigma.

How does he have ‘positive’ value this offseason? No other D-Men are available for trade and the best UFA’s are Matt Niskanen and Dan Boyle.

    • leafmeister says:

I am with you in that I would have rather let him walk than resign him, but at this point he probably does have some trade value. NYI, FLA, EDM, COL, SJS, WPG, could all use a big minute (although his workload is pretty overstated as far as I am concerned) defensive presence locked up for a long time and there are not many to be had. I’d be willing toe at quite a bit of his salary to get some value.

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

I think his contract will look a lot better after guys like Niskanen and Markov sign for 6+ and both get ridiculous term. Hell even Subban will get 8+ x 8 as an RFA.

      • TmLeafan says:

I think Edmonton would consider it. They are desperate to improve their defence and if Ekblad is gone maybe they are willing to make a move.

        • leafs_wallace93 says:

Wouldn’t Edmonton like both Phaneuf and Ekblad? I’d love to get their 2015 1st

          • kessel_leafs81 says:

Maybe edmonton goes after the first overal and doesnt risk ekblad being gone when it gets to them. Florida is probably eyeing a dman but I think if edm offers klefboom and their 3rd overal for 1st overal thatd be enough to entice florida to accept the deal. Then if edmonton wants to flip a forward like perron for phaneuf and finally fix the defense woes and have phaneuf – nurse
            ekblad – schultz

as a top 4 would be pretty enticing. They can definately afford giving up perron and hope yakupov has a bounce back year with the top line hall-nuge-eberle

            • Perron was one of their best forwards last year. Perhaps they might want to sell him high, but he was more valuable to them than Eberle last year. He’s a pest with a lot of skill and put up career numbers with them. I think they try to hold onto him unless dealing him in a better package.

I would get rid of Yakupov before trading Perron.

          • TmLeafan says:

It would be nice but we need to make a move sooner rather than later with Kessel in his prime.

Draft a stud this year they probably need another year in junior so we can realistically expect them to make an impact 2 years from now. Ekblad is an exception he looks like he could have played in the NHL this season, he is a manchild.

  17. leafy says:

People in San Jose and Pittsburgh want a major overhaul, but let’s take a closer look at this. They both lost to what proved to be outstanding teams. L.A. is a juggernaut and will in the Stanley Cup this year, while NY Rangers have marched right to the finals playing some great hockey. Any major purges should be done after the playoffs.
