If Max Talbot is available, the Edmonton Oilers should take a run at him
The Edmonton Oilers absolutely should go after Philadelphia Flyers forward Max Talbot. Stanley Cup pedigree and only age 29. Has some personality, plays hard, and even if he has three years left on his deal, it’s only $1.75 million a year. As I recall, he scored two goals in the Penguins’ Stanley Cup-winning game in 2009.
– If the San Jose Sharks are trading anybody at the deadline, it’ll be big defenceman Douglas Murray, 33, who’s an unrestricted free agent. Murray pounds people, but his foot speed is a major issue in the racehorse game of today. Big centre Michal Handzus, 36, for a fourth-line role, maybe. Winger Ryane Clowe would be the most attractive piece of the puzzle, even with no goals this year, because he’s a snarly big-body, but if they’re close to the playoffs, they might keep Clowe. What would you get for that rental? Second-round pick or a good prospect.
– Should we be surprised Anaheim Ducks centre Andrew Cogliano was spitting out blood and two teeth after taking a puck in the face in SoCal a few days ago, never missing a shift? Nope. Cogliano took Rob Blake’s skate under his visor as an Oiler and never missed a game. Had his lip split open and never missed a game. Fact is, Cogliano has never missed a single game in his six NHL seasons. He’s at 441 games played and counting.
– If the Chicago Blackhawks are looking for another centre — and they are — could they take a shot on Dallas Stars rental Derek Roy? Don’t see why not. They wouldn’t give up a first-rounder for Roy in a deep draft, but a second-round pick and a prospect might do it. They’ve got lots of kids in the pipeline. I have to figure the Vancouver Canucks are sniffing around Roy, as well. Under good and bad news: Jaromir Jagr, at 41, leads Dallas with 24 points in 30 games. They aren’t trading him, and he’s an an unrestricted free agent, too. Jagr has 13 goals, and he’ll be the oldest NHL player to lead his team in goals if this keeps up.
