McCabe deal in Limbo

According to a Newspaper in TO, the following was printed in todays papers…..Comments, Thoughts.

Nearly a week has gone by since the Maple Leafs and defenceman Bryan McCabe apparently agreed on a five-year contract, but no official announcement has been made by the club.

Why not? Usually, when a story of this magnitude breaks, there’s confirmation in the following 24 hours.

There are a couple of points of speculation relating to the delay of the announcement. One is the contract is being held up at the board level at Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment Ltd., with members trying to decide whether giving McCabe a five-year pact with a no-movement clause is a good idea. MLSEL president Richard Peddie, however, said yesterday, “There are no board issues at all with the contract.”

The other possible reason for the delay could involve McCabe’s wife, Roberta, who might not be comfortable in committing to another five years in Toronto. The couple has a daughter, Stevie, who was born last September, and a home in Long Island, N.Y., where Roberta’s family lives. The thinking is Roberta McCabe would like to be closer to her New York ties.

One source said the club was set to announce the deal, with McCabe, at a news conference, last Thursday.

The deal calls for McCabe, who turns 31 in two days, to be paid approximately $28.75 million US. He is coming off his best season when he was third among defencemen with 68 points (19 goals and 49 assists) in 73 games. Previously, McCabe’s top campaign was 2003-04, when he had 16 goals and 37 assists.

Neither McCabe nor his agent, Jeff Solomon, returned messages yesterday. Leafs general manager John Ferguson could not be reached for comment.

again, McKee and Dempsey sounds pretty good to me.

    i dunno,

i just want to see Dempsey back – i know he is not amazing but he was solid and he’d be good beside guys like – well McKee – or even Harrison or White.

k, no one cares what you’d do cause you can’t play hockey at the pro level.

  5. LeafsLeafsLeafs says:

neither can you so what exactly is your point? just sniffing around to bust someone’s balls i guess eh?

No, I don’t think its cool to rag on McCabe’s wife, when you don’t know the situation nor is it your business. Apparently you think you know the deal and have provide a solution for the family, good for you. How dare I question you’re blog (bowing sarcastically).

  7. 92-93 says:

  8. LeafsLeafsLeafs says:

Ok once again you haven’t noticed that I didnt write the article……the article talks about mccabe’s wife, that is the subject matter in the article what should i make a comment about? Your testicles?

  9. the_word says:

Did the article call McCabe’s wife a puckbunny? Or say that she should just commit to whatever you think McCabe wants? No that was you, and how about we keep this discussion on hockey, rather than my anatomy, I know you really want to talk about it, but try to contain yourself, its embrassing.

Good chance of that- McCabe is actually LeafyMcLeaf.

  11. 92-93 says:

    good news –

detroit is letting go of Legace according to

lets hope the leafs get him if they cannot get someone better

  12. Ozhockey says:

Good. There’s no way McCabe’s worth that sort of money, nor that time commitment. Toronto’s got a lot of young defence talent coming up that could easily replace McCabe well before his potential 5 year contract would run out, making the no-trade clause utterly ridiculous.

  13. Ozhockey says:

Agreed. Legace would be a good fit for the Leafs right now. They don’t need a Marque goalie at the moment, just someone to help fill the void before Rask or Pogge can step up.
