McCabe to Long Island?

Various sources are reporting that the Maple Leafs are shopping Bryan McCabe and his hefty contract. First they need to get him to waive his no-trade cause similar to the Wade Redden situation.

He is interested in returning to the Islanders, the team he was drafted to. The Islanders do have the money available, but will they take the risk and who will they give up?

Here is how there situation on defense looks:

Thought both GERVAIS and JOHNSON are the most likely to be sent down to Bridgeport if they aquire MCCABE.

What sources?  The move makes perfect sense from many angles, but I'm just curious on who's reporting this?

If the rumor is legit, such a trade can only help the Leafs.  Just wondering who the leafs will get back in return.  2nd round draft pick?  Prospects?  Roster player, i.e., Trent Hunter (I wish), Miro Satan (he's struggling too)?

I immediately thought the same thing, can you (the author) hook me up with a link?

And I think the leafs need to fill up the draft pick cupboard a bit so this would be the best thing for them to give back. However this is not the best thing for the Isles to trade away after giving up Nilson, O'marra and draft picks for Smyth last year. So….I don't know.

Dear loyal columnists and readers of HTR,

    Write this down…

If McCabe is traded or moved so that he no longer plays for the Leafs I will eat my shirt.

I will even post pictures when / if it happens.

I too will rejoice the day Bryan McCabe parts ways with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Personally, I do think he has the potential to return to his post-lockout form, although this would require significant risk and salary cap space on behalf of the New York Islanders. It seems that McCabe is in desperate need of a change of scenery (away from the demanding Toronto Maple Leafs crowd), where his play and salary will not be as highly scrutinized; New York is definitely the place to accomplish that. As well, New York has seemingly made a recent habit of acquiring controversial players and signing them to ludicrous contracts (Guerin, Comrie, DiPietro, etc.), lending some credibility to the proposed rumor.    I hope this is the case, although, unlike the last post, I believe I will most likely consume my regular dinner, with a prayer both at the beginning and end, thanking god for allowing Bryan McCabe to be moved.

I would honestly give mccabe away for free just to get rid of him and makes the fans happy.

  7. jpmac says:

I notice how pretty much all leaf fans will give McCabe away for nothing..if that is the case what makes you think any other team wants his $5.75 million dollar shot?

  8. mojo19 says:

okay, im gonna remember this so I hope you have an alternate account ready to go….

  9. mojo19 says:

believe me, someone wants it. A better question is, what team is good enough (in terms or city, calibre team, etc.) for McCabe to waive his clause for, if any?

  10. jpmac says:

Only he would know that, but I do believe that it wouldn't be a salary dump it would be one underachieving player for another….No one really wants a 6million dollar liabilty on their back end

McCabe is probably one the best offensive defencman in the league, and although his track record isnt that good, he is pretty good defensivily.   We should definetly trade him, hes to valuable to have on the second line especially when we can get guys Satan or Hunter.  If we trade McCabe we dont have enough defencman to fill his spot which is why we should make another trade.  Although Carlo Colaiacovo has a bright future, it seems that Ian White, Anton Stralman and Tomas Kaberle all look better than him.  I have heard that Nick Boynton of the Pheonix Coyotes could be on the move and with his speed, good shot and great defensively he could be a real bonus for the leafs.   Obviously there would be minor players added in each trade like 3rd rounders or average prospects.

the lineup would be set for a long time and with the extra money we could land someone big at the deadline, like Marion Hossa if the Thrasher keep struggling.

    Blake           Sundin           Steen
    Antropov      Wellwood       Ponikarovsky
    Tucker         Stajan            Hunter
    Kilger           Pohl                Bell

    Kaberle   Kubina
    Boynton  White
    Gill         Stralman

    Toskala   Raycroft   Pogge   Clemmenson

This is a very good team, great offensivily and good on defence and im sticking to it , good goaltending
