It seems as if mess wants another year after this year. He has an option on his contract….. I don’t think he will pass it up. Mess loves the game of hockey and NY. He wants one more cup.

My question is…. What are the lines?

    Rucinsky isn’t signed yet.

    So….

    Barnaby-Lindros-Bure

    Nedved-Holik-Dvorak

    Murry-Mess-MaCarthy

    Donato-Lyashanko-Oliwa

    Leetch – Kasparitis

    Malakov – Lafabev

    Poti – Chechturken

Still a lot of holes….. what to do, what to do,,,,?

  2. mikster says:

Well….he adds depth. Plus, the Rangers need a captain, and bringing Messier in is the best they can do, best captain available.

Messier scored 67 points in 82 games two seasons ago. Last season he faced an injury, who doesn’t? Messier will be a 3rd line center or even a winger. I expect him to score around 30 points.

  3. mikster says:

Well if you look at the training camp roster, the have a lot of players to look at. Rucinsky will only play if he accepts around $1.5 million a season.

You may see Mess as a LW too. I think Lundmark will definitely earn himself a spot on any forward position. You may see something like this:

    Nedved-Lindros-Bure

    Lundmark-Holik-Dovrak

    Murray-Messier-McCarthy

    Barnaby-Lyashenko-Samuelsson

    Maybe…

    Murray-Lindros-Bure

    Nedved-Holik-Dvorak

    Ekman-Messier-Lundmark

    Oliwa or Barnaby-Lyashenko-McCarthy or Samuelsson.

    Leetch-Malakhov

    Poti-Kaspar

    Kloucek-Karpa

    or…

    Leetch-Kloucek

    Malakhov-Kaspar

Poti-Bouchard/Chebaturkin/Purinton/Aufiero/Mottau/Tjutin…..who knows. There are many players for Trottier and Schoenfeld to work with. Schoenfelf has an excellent eye for defense, and i think he will put the best combo he will see.

first off i wanted ta say hi to everyone. i’ve been reading HTR for a couple months but my old comp wouldn’t allow me to register. anyways, i’d like to see line combo’s:

    McCarthy-Lindros-Bure

-McCarthy adds enormus grit to the line, and a big body to stand in front of the net, and dig in the corners. also he can keep players lookin for the big hit on Lindros honest. Last year he showed some real finesse play when he wasn’t playin with the clean-up crew.

    Nedved-Holik-Dvorak

-as much as i’d like to see a barnaby-holik-dvorak line i don’t see how the rangers could justify nedved not gettin the icetime. nedved won’t go into the corners like barnaby would which would allow dvorak to float and holik to stand in front, but talk around here is of this line goin against other teams #1, and nedved can backcheck better than barnaby.

    lundmark-messier-barnaby

-mess and barns both have incredible heart, and lundmark would gain immeasurably by being on the ice with them. while i don’t see the incredible future the rangers have in mind for lundmark i think he can become a solid winger.

    oliwa-murry-sammuelsson

-defintely questionable. sammuelsson had his moments last year, and he’s young with jump, and he looked to be tryin to impress last year. oliwa would continue the physical play that hopefully will wear down opposing defensemen, and murry is a solid 2-way forward.

    leetch-malakhov

-some of the things i’ve read on here about leetch amazes me! he’s not the leetch of ’94, but he’s still one of the best positional players in the league, and plays a wise game, and with this new mix of forwards there’s no reason he can’t be the offensive threat that he once was.

    poti-kasparitis

-the beginning of the next leetch-beukeboom tandem?? maybe not, but i think both are top 4 defensemen, on any club.

    kloucek-lefebvre

-lefebvre gotta go. and i would LOVE to see tutin crack the roster. but i think tutin could use a pro year, and kloucek could feel a little more free to throw the body with lefebvre hobbling around.

    PLAYERS THAT MUST GO!

    lefebvre

    donato (were they serious?!?)

    karpa

PLAYERS WORTH A LOOK IN CAMP:

    garth murray

    fedor tutin

    rico fata

    nils ekman

    dale purinton

  6. mikster says:

    I know what you mean…..and i agree.

    Lemieux should retire.

  7. guinsfan4life says:

Come on, for you to even put Messier in the same category as Lemieux is insulting!! Lemieux was twice the player Messier was in his prime and is just a season off of helping to lead the penguins to the Eastern Conference Finals.

Messier should have retired when Gretzky did. The only thing he is doing is taking a roster spot away from a younger player. Messier will be relegated to playing on the third line; Mario would be on the first line of any team in the NHL.

Mario had a miserable season last year. Hip, back you name it. If the same thing happens this year, I will agree with you, he should retire.

However, Messier has been ineffective for the past 2 years. He has to go. What is even worse is the fact the Rangers are paying him 2X what he is worth, which is typical for them.

  8. guinsfan4life says:

    Sands-

Putting Barnaby on the first line is your first mistake. Barnaby is not a first line player and no matter how strong he finished last year, he is not a first line player.

I don’t agree with putting Kaspar pairing with Leetch too. Leetch is an offensive d-man, perhaps the best in the league. He will take chances and get caught in the action. It just so happens that Kaspar often times goes for the big hit along the boards and takes himself out of the action and gives the other team a scoring chance. Put Kaspar with another solid d-man. I watched Kaspar all last year compromise his position to make a big hit and the penguins paid for it by allowing a goal.

I’d also put Holik with Bure. Bure is more offensive and Holik defensive. That may open more opportunities for Holik to get bure the puck.

Let me know what you think.

  9. 5forboarding says:

When mario has 6 cups, then talk to me! Mess first major injury at 40! When they say best captain in hockey, past and present,I here names like Mess,Stevie Y,Sakic,Bourque, but I dont here Marios name! There is more to hockey, than scoring goals!!!

  10. mikster says:

Well, if Barnaby builds good chemistry with the Lindros line and it becomes one of the best lines in the league, who cares.

Holik and Bure could work out ok, but with Bure, Holik might get involved too much offensively. Dvorak can basically match Bure’s speed and is better defensively, so he goes well with Holik.

Kaspar and Leetch is a wild idea, but i think Kaspar has just enetered his prime. He has to mature his minds and make better decisions. Schoenfeld is a BIG HELP for any defenseman and i think Kaspar is a perfect 3rd defenseman. Cehck out my lines that i had too, i like them.

  11. mikster says:

I just did that to tease you.

Messier scored 67 points two seasons ago, i think that is great for a 40 year old player.

    Let me ask you this…

Would you rather not have a real true captain on the team that fits perfectly as a 3rd line player, or not have a 20 year old trying to make the NHL as a 3rd line player?

If you go for not having a young player, then don’t even bother replying to this!

Messier has been somewhat effective the past two seasons. He scored 67 points in his first season, playing all of 82 games. The second season the Rangers were the top team in the East, and when he was injured, they went downhill.

He does put an effect on this team. When you have Lindros, Bure, Holik, Kaspar, Nedved, and some youngsters….you need that captain who stands up in the middle of the locker room and everyone looks up to listen to him. Messier will welcome Kaspar and Holik well, and he makes a difference for Leetch. Leetch scored 79 points when Messier came back, and in the first half last season, Leetch was doing so very well with Malakhov.

I don’t think Messier is worth $1.5 million. Look at Stevens, he is getting an average of $7 million a season for the next three years. Do you think Stevens is worth that? That guy is slower than Messier and he is just a stay at home defenseman. But, he is their captain.

  12. Ari says:

got his money not for what he can do, but for what he has done for the team.

Stevens is a great player. He is a force and a feared player.

  13. guinsfan4life says:

The only reason why Messier has 6 cups is cause he played on a team with a guy named Gretzky. If Gretz. wasn’t on that team, you think he’d have six cups? I highly doubt it.

Bottom line. Mario carried the penguins on his back practically to win those 2 cups. Messier couldn’t–.

  14. guinsfan4life says:

I’d rather have the 20 yr. old actually and here’s why.

With Messier you know what you are going to get-maybe 30-40 points this season and if he plays next season you have a little drop off.

However with the younger kid you might get 10-20 pts., you know, after a few seasons he is going to develop into a solid NHL player that you will have some growing pains with, but you know he’ll be around and the production will be there night after night and you won’t have to pay him 3 mil. plus incentives to lace up his skates.

With all the character you have on that team Mick, if you are going to tell me you need ANOTHER captain on the third line, that doesn’t say much about what you currently have–I thought Lindros is a born leader, what about Holik? Kaspar is a leader I know. So tell me, what is going to happen to the Rangers when Messier retires if they soooo badly need a leader on the THIRD line now? If Lindros won’t stand up and take control of that lockerroom and show some balls, then why is he making the money he is?

Stevens is an altogether different topic-For a different day. My fingers are sore.

#5 and #6 were without the Great One. Would the Great One win 4 without Messier? NO!!! History proves he could not win one without Messier. If Messier were on the Kings… LA would not have lost every game in overtime like they did against Montreal in the Stanley Cup Finals! If Gretz is on the Rangers in 1994 insted of Messier… NJ Devils win the Stanley Cup that year! They call Gretz “The Great One”… They call Messier “The Captain!” If the Flyers signed Messier in 1996-1997 insted of Vancover… Today we would be talking about a Flyers dynasty!
