Mike Bab***** tries to sell Nicklas Lidstrom on team having another shot at Cup

If Nicklas Lidstrom returns next season, he will be playing for a competitive club that will remain a Stanley Cup contender after making a few offseason changes. That was the recruiting pitch Detroit Red Wings coach Mike Bab***** made to his indispensable defenseman Saturday at Joe Louis Arena, as players and staff gathered for the team photo and cleaned out their lockers.
Despite losing to the San Jose Sharks in the second round of the playoffs for the second year in a row, Bab***** believes this team was much better this season and still has a positive upside. “I think if our team was no good, Nick wouldn’t even consider coming back. But I think having the kind of year he did and the kind of playoff he did and the kind of playoff our team had, it’s given me confidence he’ll be back,” Bab***** said.http://www.mlive.com/redwings/index.ssf/2011/05/nicklas_lidstrom_talks_about_h.html

    Sorry, just read your article.

Uhh Im not sure who would argue that. The Leafs are MILES ahead of the Islanders rebuild right now.

Yea, if he does return they only need to sign one UFA defencemen instead of two.  If Ehrhoff costs 6, Parise 7.5, and Pitkanen 5, they would still have cap space to sign quality role players.  Just disgusting.

While it still looks like a great lineup, losing Lidstrom and Rafalski would still be huge. Pitkanen and Ehrhoff are good defensemen, but nowhere near the level of the other two. Maybe Parise makes up for it, but I'd be unsure about it.

The way they did it was much different though. They went to OT/Shootout so many times during the season and usually won, which inflates their point total.

Ture about stepping up in the playoffs. I guess it would be hypocritical to argue that when Kelly was nowhere near as good as he is now as he was during the regular season.

Between Smith, Pitkanen, Parise and Ehroff, I don't think it would be a problem. The chemistry would be the issue for me. That's three big name players. That would be a big task to get them all working together.

That line-up would be scary. It is unlikely Detroit can sign all of Smith, Pitkanen, Parise and Erhoff, not because of money, it's just unlikely they land them all. If they somehow managed to it looks great on paper. I agree with the fact that the chemistry is always the unknown.

I'd argue it, seven more wins on a season where the Isles were at one point using an ECHL quality goalie and that horrendous losing skid put a dent in the season – they found their goaltending in Montoya and when he is healthy (which is NOT very often unfortunately) Dipietro is a gamer!

Granted the Leafs have more depth but the song remains the same six years without the song remains the same that no playoffs for either team is the marker.
