IT’S NO SECRET THAT THE CAPITALS WILL MOVE GREEN,they won’t let him walk for nothing….i think the redwings will land him at or before the deadline

  2. LN91 says:

How did former Habs draft pick Brady Vail end up on the Leafs tryout team?

    • nordiques100 says:

      JVR-Bozak-Kessel
      Lupul-Kadri-Clarkson
      Booth-Santorelli-Winnik
      Komarov-Kontiola-Frattin
      Holland-Ashton

Smith, Bodie, Orr, McLaren will all have to go on waivers.

I believe Kontiola and Holland are the ones who can be sent down without clearing, but they both play centre which the leafs need.

we dont need tough guys so there to me, doesnt seem any point in keeping them.

      • LN91 says:

        Unfortunately, Holland is on a 1-way contract…

No way you can send him down, he will be picked up in a second.

One guy I would like to see given a shot (and he apparently has been) is Brandon Kozun.

    • nordiques100 says:

i also get the feeling too LN91 that perhaps Franson and a forward could be packaged together for a defenceman.

  3. leafs_wallace93 says:

Really starting to hate the Holland deal, giving up two picks for this dud? Could have easily not played so much last year and not given up that conditional 2nd round pick. Now he’s middling on a one way deal. Don’t him ever being a top fix forward let alone center.

I don’t get why so many people like this guy, he’s Joe Colbourne light.

    • toronto77 says:

Why do you hate Holland? He will be a great 2-way centre men, and has an underrated shot. Much like Biggs, players of their size who have to rely on playing a more physical game to be successful need more time to develop. Holland and even Biggs have great frames to be good 2-way forwards.

  4. leafy says:

I have a feeling the Leafs are talking trade. I see something coming down to solve the logjam at forward.

  5. leafs_wallace93 says:

2nd is ending, Nylander is looking pretty great.

  6. toronto77 says:

Nylander dropped an F bomb during his post game interview! LMFAO!!! love this kid!

    • LN91 says:

He needs to grow a bit…So one more season in the SHL will do. He reminds me of a young Giroux.

However, I like how he plays and visualizes the game…Kadri should take notes.

  7. leafs_wallace93 says:

Penalties aside, loving Polak’s jam, forgot what a physical defenseman looks like over the last few seasons.

    • LN91 says:

Loov and Nilsson looked really good as well, Toronto has done a good job drafting out of Sweden.

Bergman has to be considered a top-European scout, or Swedish scout atleast.

      • leafs_wallace93 says:

Yeah everyone bashes Toronto drafting but scouting Sweden is very Red Wings like.

Not to mention never got love for getting Kaberle (franchise leader in blueline points) in the 8th round back in the day. Lots guys coming up that can contribute to the bottom four.

  8. leafy says:

I missed the game but there’s plenty more left.

  9. leafs_wallace93 says:

Cody Franson special, short handed goal against, just put him on waivers already.

    • LN91 says:

Followed up by another Kadri brain fart…

It’s like history always repeats itself, despite how much they claim they change.

    • nordiques100 says:

you do know that the majority of Leaf nation will defend him and simply bury that kid Gibson for letting the goal in on a breakaway dont you?

      • leafs_wallace93 says:

Remember last year when we had two short handed goals against on the same power play… sickening

        • nordiques100 says:

          please don’t remind me thanks.

I know Franson shoots it hard, and is RH but i will not be a happy camper if Reilly is getting limited PP minutes. I think i much rather see Gardiner/Reilly share the point on the main PP.

i mean Kessel up high, isnt that a dangerous enough of a shooter? And you dont really want to get JVR killed with the inaccuracies of Dion and Cody at the points. There are times where you wonder, WTF are you shooting at? Oh thats right, they were aiming at Lupul to put him on IR again.

  10. kessel_leafs81 says:

Nobodys really talking about holzer but i think hes looked great. The first preseason game you could really tell he wanted to show off his two way ability and jump into the rush. Hes a guy that has shown he wants it bad and I think was torontos best defenseman in that first game. It looks like his skating has really improved and i would like for him to push for a spot.

Side note, dont think leafs should sign tallinder after training camp.. hasnt shown that hes better then the young guys that are competing for a spot. Much rather grandberg/holzer.

Last point.. I cant remember the techniqual parts to the rules but would anybody be against trying out nylander for 10 games to get him some experience before sending him to sweden if hes not ready? love watching his creativity and puck handling. I especially liked having JVR and Lupul on the same line and watching the puck possession. Nylander and kessel would be a little to soft for puck possession but sure would be exciting off the rush. I think next year the leafs could have a pretty solid top 6 if nylander makes the jump and kadri continues to improve which i think he has IMO.

    • toronto77 says:

it’s 9 games not 10 and yes I think they should keep him for those 9 then send him back. You can definitely damage his development if you play him for a full 82 game season if he’s not ready but I don’t think 9 games would hurt. He is learning a lot playing in the exhibition games and he will probably learn even more if he plays 9 regular season games, he will be more experienced for next year.

Also I think that we should send him to the marlies and not sweden, I agree with Kypreos when he says get him out of here and away from the media and the bs and just focus on his game in sweden, but the AHL is a more physical league and will better prepare him for next season and plus he will be playing with future team-mates.

I know its early, but who does everyone like in the East?

    Atlantic

    3. Montreal
    4a. Detroit
    4b. Toronto

    8. Buffalo

I know the B’s are in cap problems now, but they are still too deep and have a great core group: Rask, Chara, Bergeron, Lucic, Krejci. They also have youth coming through and contributing like Hamilton, Krug and Smith. I think they may lose a bit of depth as they’ll probably have to move a Kelly and/or McQuaid or Boychuk but they will still be very solid.

Tampa is pretty close. I like their mix. THey are bigger and harder to play against and have more depth. But all hinges on whether Stamkos and/or Bishop can stay healthy. If they get hurt again, that will hurt them.

Montreal to me is 3rd simply because of Price. They could be hard pressed to score but their speed is a difference maker. Price though is everything for them. I don’t care if they have Subban or if Tokarski was good when Price was out. Price IS the Habs and arguably a league MVP even if the voting doesnt work that way.

You see I have 3 times for 4th. It will be that close. And even those 3 teams will give Montreal a run for 3rd. Its fairly wide open.

Detroit i am hedging on their veteran leadership and great coaching to pull them through again. Howard though needs to be good because i think Gustavsson’s season was a bit of a fluke. They can’t lean on him again. The Datsyuk injury hurts and that will be the main wings downfall, not having their impact guys in the lineup due to injury. That can’t happen regularly next year. Their kids are good, but not at that high level yet to take over.

The Panthers are a whole new team practically, but all their success will be dependent on Luongo. I am not sure they can score as their additions didnt really address that all that much. I think they’re hoping Barkov, Bjugstad and Huberdeau can take it to a high MacKinnon like level. If not, Luongo will see a lot of pucks and better keep them out.

It brings me to the Leafs. A lot here is dependent on Carlyle. Can he implement a system that won’t see the Leafs break the Corsi/Fenwick records in a bad way. They have goaltending, they have high end skill guys who can break a game open, but they still have a suspect D and we don’t know how all the depth at forward fits. Its more quantity than quality. I think Carlyle is the first coach on the chopping block. I give him a dozen games. a sub .500 record and he is gone.

The Sens and Sabres bring up the rear. I think the Sens problem is scoring. And if Anderson and Lehner are just ok, they’re done. The Sabres will be competitive and harder to play against than last year, but there’s no Miller, Vanek or Pominville even to lead the team. They’re going for McDavid.

The Pens are still the class here because of Malkin, Crosby and a deep D despite losing 2 regulars. Fleury is good for the regular season and simply, the rest of their division foes are inconsistent. The key is whether Malkin and Crosby can stay healthy. Same goes with Letang. Any team will suffer losing impact guys like these.

The Caps will return to prominence i think as i think there is a motivated OV and they have a deep defence. The keys will be if Holtby can be a consistent no. 1 goalie. Jury still out on that. I think though having a team that can actually role 3 good D pairs will help him and the team overall. The forwards though have to help. Thats on OV to lead. Will the caps too have enough secondary scoring. I mean Joel Ward is their next best sniper after OV? wow thats sad.

Columbus would be no. 2…..if the Johansen situation wasnt so tenuous and Horton wasnt hurt…again. But Bobs in goal is really solid and they are a big team that plays a lot like a western conference team. The problem is if they are missing their 2 best forwards, can they score enough? I don’t think so. And this time they’re more favored unlike last year. So they won’t surprise anyone.

The Flyers are still pretty solid. But Giroux hurt again and that could mean another slow start for him. The slow start last year almost cost the Flyers a playoff spot. And their D has a lot of NHL bodies, but where are the good ones? Losing Timonen is huge. MDZ isnt a quality enough replacement for him. I think the Mason/Emery duo will get the job done and their forward depth is decent. But if Giroux isnt playing well or at all, they are in deep doo doo.

The Rags will battle. They have Lundqvist. They have star power with Nash, StLouis and McDonaugh. But they are far from being as deep as they were when they went to the finals. Stepan is hurt. Richards, Pouliot, Boyle, Stralman are gone. Their replacements are Stempniak, Lombardi, Malone, Dan Boyle. Too many former Leafs for my liking. If Nash can’t score who the heck will? King Hendrik can only do so much.

The Isles will be competitive and could surprise even leapfrogging everyone up to the Capitals. Halak is the type of goalie who can steal his way all the way. The problem is their D only has 1 pairing. after that, they are dreadful. But they have good forward depth and if Tavares returns to full health, they will be dangerous. Don’t count the Isles out. Plus they are motivated. They can’t finish bottom 5 without a top pick this year.

The Devils. My are they old. But Schnieder will keep them alive. Jagr, Cammy, Zajac they have some good skill. but their D is weak and if they can’t figure out a way to win in extra time, they will miss out again. But they are a well coached team, lots of experience and decent depth, good goaltending. They could cause a lot of teams trouble.

The Canes are going to be bad. Unless Ward/Khudobin can steal every game. But I don’t think Ward can play every game. Now Jordan Staal out. Who’s their 2nd best natural centre? Its likely Jay McClement who wasnt even good enough to remain a Leaf, a team who lacked depth. if Jordan’s brother Eric can improve either, it could be a long year. It may be a long year anyways with 3 former Leafs on D.

It will be interesting to watch how the East plays out but there are some clear cut playoff favorites and some clear bottom feeders. I think at the end of the day, if the stars all align, the Bolts will represent the East in the finals. They have the mix of depth, experience, speed, youth, goaltending plus a stud game changer. And their coaching is solid.

the habs are a very deep team and price is the best goaltender in the division we are a much more balnced team on defence and are 4 lines deep with depth , we are very fast and skilled sekac will be a solid replacement for gionta

  12. nordiques100 says:

And hey what about the Western conference?

    Central
    1. St Louis
    2. Chicago
    3. Dallas
    4. Colorado
    5. Minnesota
    6. Nashville
    7. Winnipeg

The Blues are going to be very good and very tough to beat. I think that first round loss will help them. At least it should because they know what the next level they need to reach is. They have arguably the best D and adding Stastny to the group of forwards they have is only going to help. The only question is goaltending but i really like Jake Allen. I think he will overtake Elliot and be a difference maker.

Chicago is Chicago. Deep, talented, full of skill and leadership and everything in between. I like many other though are still on the fence about Crawford. But he is decent enough. And its becoming really hard to bet against Toews

The Stars looks dangerous. Now they have 2 scoring lines. Benn and Seguin are arguably the best dynamic duo in the NHL. Now Spezza is in support. They have a lot of depth up front but if Gonchar is in your top 3 on D, you will have problems. That will be their achilles heel. But if Lehtonen stays healthy and plays like he has since he arrived in Dallas, they will be a real dark horse pick.

A few people are wondering when will Pat Roy’s act wear thin. I think they will have to keep waiting. I don’t think they will win the division again and surprise anyone, but their high end skill they have will be a handful for any team. You just wonder if they will have happen to them what happened to the Leafs if their poor analytical numbers continue.

Minnesota as the 5th seed? Hard to believe. They could vault up as much as anyone. their question is in goal. They used 3 regulars last year and still havent resolved the problem. And now Harding foolishly hurt himself and is suspended. Thats the last thing they needed. But, any team with Suter on D and their host of quick, skilled forwards will cause opponent problems. Their goaltending though is among the worst in the entire conference so that difference could cost them.

The Preds will score more. But will they be better? Rinne has to play for that to happen but he may see even more rubber than ever. Their D is young, but has Weber to lead them and are very offensively inclined which could cause opponents issues. However, their forwards I don’t think are ready to break out. They have a bright future with Forsberg, Fiala, Jarnkrok but right now they’re leaning on Roy, Jokinen and Ribiero. Ugh.

The Jets have some nice talent. 2 good scoring lines a decent 3rd line, depth on D that has led to Byfuglien to play forward full time and lots of skill everywhere. But Pavelec is awful. The worst goalie in the conference. If they address that position or Pavelec plays above and beyond the Jets otherwise have zero chance in the tough west.

    Pacific
    1. Anaheim
    2. San Jose
    3. LA
    4. Vancouver
    5. Arizona
    6. Edmonton
    7. Calgary

Like many others, I like the Ducks. They have a lot of everything. Heatley could surprise or otherwise be a no-risk cheap option for depth. The team is though revolving around Getzlaf and Perry. I like their host of young players, arguably the best in the NHL as a group coming up together. We will see though if Gibson is the real deal. By all accounts, he already is.

The Sharks will once again be a solid regular season team. Despite a bit of controversy with Thornton and Marleau, they are solid. I think they are too talented to go into a spiral. But their next 82 games that count don’t really matter. A playoff without a massive collapse or utter failure will be all that matters here.

The Kings will coast into the playoffs. They are built to dominate there. Just too big and deep and strong to handle. Road, Home doesnt matter. As long as Quick is Quick, the Kings will go far. I think Doughty will win the Norris this time around. And with Gaborik around full year hopefully, their hockey pool stats may go up for the bunch of them.

The Canucks will be competitive. But i am not sure they have enough to make it or at least guarantee a playoff spot. The Sedins have to rebound or else they will not score. Their D and specifically Edler has to be way better. Hard to say how good Miller will be. It could go either way for them. But, they’ve quickly rebuilt their farm system to respectable levels and have a decent future going forward.

The Coyotes are looking for a fresh start. But their bread and butter is defence and goaltending. IF that falters, it may lead them to a bottom 5 finish, which in turn could land them the impact forward star this team sorely needs. Right now, they will have to outwork teams to win. And lean on Mike Smith. If Smith is so so again, may be time to break out the Eichel/McDavid hopes.

The Oilers will be better…..because they simply cannot be worse. They are deeper, bigger and more experienced. But if Marc Arcobello is their 2nd line centre else a raw 18 year old is handed that responsibility, they are not going to be good enough. You have to worry if you are an Oilers fan that guys like Hall, Eberle, RNH are resided to being losers losing so much here.

The Flames will be competitive, but are severely lacking talent. It would be smart for them to send Bennett back to the OHL and let him play on a competitive team rather than the growing pains the Flames will endure. Hiller will help them give some goaltending consistency but at the end of the day, the talent is not there. They are my Eichel/McDavid pre-season favorite.

The West is brutal. The central has 5 awesome teams. I believe the Hawks will return once again to the finals winning the war out here. It won’t be easy as the Blues will be better and the Kings are not going to give up the crown easily. But I just like the Hawks because of Toews, Kane, Keith etc and their competitive nature to get back to the top. I think they will topple Tampa in the final to win their 3rd cup since 2010.

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

Dallas reminds me of Tampa some shiny star power in their top six and nothing to support it. Don’t see Bishop repeating last year. I suppose Tampa has Hedman but will continue to suffer post St.Louis.

St.Louis, great depth but any go to guys other than AP? Can easily see any of their stars going in long slumps. Stastny will struggle as this years bust UFA. He fed off a lot of great talent in Colorado (and sucked before they carried him).

Never thought I say this because they were the Sens of the West but I like SJ this year, they have a lot to prove and are deep, need a blueline upgrade to compete in the playoffs but have all the pieces for a blockbuster.

Colarado is as good as Varlamov, thin blueline, EJ and Berrie are a good enough top pairing. Another case of a deadly top six without a supporting cast. Can see them in the lottery.

Arinoza, will continue to overachieve under Tippett communist team first trapping boredom.

Hawks & LA continue to sleep walk through the regular season, the NHL’s answers to the San Antonio Spurs.

      Calgary and Edmonton gong shows

Canucks and Nashville are in a dog fight for 8th. Both made significant off season upgrades, have young talent that can make an impact and most important both have much needed new coaches.

Anaheim like SJ take that next step. Ducks/Sharks become the new Chicago/LA this season. Kesler and a maturing blueline may the difference. Ducks may need a new coach though.

      • nordiques100 says:

I agree with SJ. its hard for me to write them off too which is why i had them in 2nd. But its all about the playoffs for them. Otherwise they’ll be the Buffalo Bills of hockey. Always the runner ups. At least in the western conference.

  13. leafy says:

If there’s a huge trade, I see Franson and Reimer involved.

  14. leafy says:

I heard the Leafs wanna get Patrick Sharp. The Hawks need to clear cap space. Could be a trade brewing.

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

We need to burn assets for a another skill winger?

      • nordiques100 says:

He has played centre in the past for the Hawks. A necessity maybe for the Leafs, WHEN Tyler Bozak gets hurt.

That seems to be the best logic for this. My first wonder is where is the cap space going to come from? Some magical mystical power going to take that Clarkson contract from us in full?

        • kessel_leafs81 says:

actually reimer + franson’s contracts traded for sharps contract puts us exactly on the cap according to capgeek haha. I would deffinately not mind reimer + franson + a pick for sharp. Having a sniper on each top line would be very nice.

          JVR – Bozak – Kessel
          Lupul – kadri – Sharp

one of the best top 6s in the league IMO. Take some pressure off kessel and say its not working.. itd be way easier to trade a guy like lupul or sharp then it would be to trade reimer and franson in a package deal. If the opportunity is there then deffinately pull the trigger. Holzer has shown he can handle fransons minutes.

          • lafleur10 says:

hahaha put the crack pipe down your not getting sharp for that not a chance in hell they don’t want reimer they have crawford and raanta as theirbackup both are better than reimer and franson he would crack there top 5 start with gardiner your 1st rd pick and the blackhawks would at least listen before they ask for more

    • lafleur10 says:

it’ll cost you a ton for him plus you don’t have the capspace to land him

  16. toronto77 says:

I think Leivo is a lock to make this team! What he brings to the table is something a lot of veterans on this team don’t even bring. When they are making cuts and it comes down to either one of a veteran player or leivo then as a tie breaker I would choose Leivo just because he is younger and actually a part of our future.

  17. toronto77 says:

The leafs drafting in ’10, ’11, ’12 and ’13 has been exceptional in the 3rd-7th rounds.

Anyone can draft in the 1st and 2nd rounds and are mostly full of players that WILL make the NHL someday but you just don’t know how, 3rd-7th are full of players that could make the NHL and some that don’t play a single shift. That’s what sets you apart from other teams is when you are able to find gems in the bottom rounds:

Players that WILL make the NHL:
    2010
    3rd – McKegg
    4th – Granberg
    5th – Carrick

    2011
    3rd – Leivo
    4th – Nilsson
    6th – Broll
    7th – Sparks

    2012
    6th – Brown
    7th – Loov

    2013
    3rd – Verhaeghe
    6th – Bibeau

Too hard to tell what we got from the 2014 but Valiev looks like he could have been a steal in the 3rd. The rest of the players that the leafs drafted from 2010-2014 in the 3rd to 7th rounds may never make the NHL but that’s ok.

In terms of forwards outside of Nylander the leafs may not have any players that can play on the top line but they have a shit load that could play anywhere on the 2nd line to 4th! That’s some incredible depth.

Also, doesn’t Nylander play as a centermen/winger? if he does then would it not be beneficial to groom him as a centre men?

    • LN91 says:

They do well when they draft (lately), but they just do not do it enough.

I hate these 1-year deals the Leafs give out each year…As I really liked the play of some of the younger players and they need NHL seasoning (i.e. Brandon Kozun, who I thought was fantastic this preseason).

    • leafs_wallace93 says:

McKegg? Is he ever going to even get a call up?

Teams find service depth through late picks all the time. Kaberle in the 8th round, now that was special.

      • kessel_leafs81 says:

i love the play of carrick also.. mckegg, leivo, carrick and kozun have been exceptional and would probably have benefited hugely with steady nhl time. Next year with all the expired contracts and need for cap room i wouldnt be surprised to see them all leave.

      • LN91 says:

McKegg has grown leaps and bounds each year he has been playing hockey since junior…Plays 120% each shift.

Why doesn’t he have a future?

  18. kessel_leafs81 says:

Kind of Surprised leafs cut kontiola but 3 things came out of this move:
1)Nonis is sticking to his word that jobs are won and not earned.

    2) Kontiola deffinately has not earned a shot at the club. Just wasnt playing like he wanted it.

    3) Injuries to booth and clarkson and the demotion of kontiola very much may give room for leivo to be with the club the opening night. The guy is growing on me more and more each game and Could be a pleasant surprise this year for sure.

I agree 100% on Leivo! What a horrible game by the leafs tonight, it’s hard to evaluate the players when the entire team plays bad…except for maybe Rielly! This guy by the end of the season may be the leafs best d-man and one day could be the next captain.

I’m a big fan of Brandon Kozun…Leivo can be sent to be seasoned a bit more, but Leivo is great on the PK and just another one of those players that appear to be everywhere (despite being 5’9).

I haven’t seen too much exhibition action, but Gardiner looked really good tonight. He’s playing with confidence now.

Polak doesn’t look too bad. I thought we’d be getting a dud from St. Louis. We’d still have to see in the regular season but so far pretty good.

Agree on Leivo. He should be on the team.

The Leafs actually have some pretty decent skill level. It’s just a question of putting it all together. That’s where the coaching is key.

Yes, I’m really liking Polak too, aggressive hits on our blueline, haven’t seen that in ages.

Love that the advanced stats virgin community is already making Polak a whipping boy and still lamenting Gunnersson (Gunner was ok but time to turn the page).

Unless I’m very wrong, I see a huge trade brewing in the next 48 to 72 hours.
