 Campoli and Regin avoid Arbitration

Senators blanksensrulethenhl writes "The Senators announced they have signed Peter Regin to a 2 year, 2 million dollar contract and also signed Chris Campoli to a 1 year 1.4 million dollar contract. Both players were set to go to arbitration and got a deal done before their hearings. With now Ottawa needed a defensive defenseman, who will they go after? Will they trust Cowen with the job? Will they still bring back Sutton? Who will be traded....Kuba? We will have to see! Lets look into what could happen."

GONCHAR SIGNS THREE-YEAR CONTRACT WITH SENATORS

Senators blank

Veteran defenceman Sergei Gonchar  has signed a three-year contract with the Ottawa Senators worth $5.5 million per year.

The contract also includes a no-trade clause.

Sens GM Bryan Murray had been said to be looking for a puck-moving blueliner and he did so in acquiring the Russian powerplay quarterback.

Spezza wants to stay with Sens

Senators blankSenators forward Jason Spezza has dismissed speculation he wants to leave the NHL team, telling reporters Thursday he's happy in Ottawa.

Rumours of the 26-year-old's discontent have swirled around Ottawa since the Pittsburgh Penguins knocked the Senators from the first round of the playoffs in April. Spezza , who drew fire from fans for his performance in the post-season, has a no-trade clause that kicks in July 1.

"I don't have a no-trade now, so if they trade you, then you get traded," Spezza said. "Obviously, I've signed there, so I'm happy to be there. And we're looking forward to the future."

Trade Rumors: Will Spezza follow Heatley out of capital?

Senators blank

Does Jason Spezza want to be traded?

That was the question posed to the Ottawa Senators forward on Thursday after reports had surfaced that he was unhappy with his current hockey team. Spezza , who was booed by Ottawa fans at the end of this season, has five more years remaining on a $7 million US annual contract.

But the 26-year-old said the decision is not up to him.

Sources: Volchenkov not in Caps' plans

Senators blank

Contrary to a report out of Canada late last month that suggested the Caps are going to target pending unrestricted free agent Anton Volchenkov this summer, two sources have told me that the team does not, in fact, plan to pursue the Ottawa blue liner.

Trade Rumors: Is spezza unhappy in Ottawa?

Senators blank
In the next three weeks Bryan Murray will have a very important conversation with Jason Spezza , to see if his star centre is still happy in Ottawa.

At their season-ending meeting in April, Spezza expressed some frustration to the Senators general manager with the way his season ended. He was booed by his home fans in Ottawa during the club's first-round playoff loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

"He was a little unhappy at the end of the year. I took it as being somewhat emotional more than anything. I haven't talked to him in the last few weeks. I hope before July 1st to have that conversation with him," said Murray on Wednesday afternoon.

Murray did not confirm that Spezza asked for a trade during that meeting in late April. He simply said his star player felt like he was being unfairly targeted by the fans and media.

 Volchenkov out, Cowen in

Senators blanksensrulethenhl writes "When I look at the Volchenkov situation, I see a great shot blocking defenseman leaving, but when you look down the road, you see a guy standing there that is kid ready to come in and play in the NHL. His name is Jared Cowen. People said this was the guy that should of been 3rd overall in the 2009 draft. Were they right? It seems this season we will find out as he will push for a spot on the 2010-2011 Ottawa Senators lineup. "

Ottawa Senators: Senators' Kovalev untradeable: NHL execs

Senators blank
Senators fans aren’t likely to get their wish when it comes to Alex Kovalev this summer.

While the winger took it on the chin in last Sunday’s Ottawa Sun You Be The Boss poll in which 71% of respondents wanted the Russian dealt, three NHL executives doubt it’s going to happen.

After all, having a one-year, $5-million (all terms US) contract, being 37 years old and coming off surgery for a torn ACL and being generally inconsistent in 2009-10 ... there just aren’t going to be too many suitors.

“I don’t think anybody is going to want him,” a league executive said Saturday. “Sure, they could try to see if anybody wants to take him, but he’s a high-risk, low-reward player. There’s not a big market for those types of players.”

HTR Feature Article: Melnyk: Sens to 'tinker' with roster

Senators blank
Next season starts next week for the Senators.

Owner Eugene Melnyk told QMI Agency in an end-of-season interview Friday that he’ll sit down with GM Bryan Murray to discuss changes after the club’s first-round playoff exit in six games.

While Melnyk gave both Murray and coach Cory Clouston a vote of confidence in getting the Senators to the post-season under “difficult cir*****stances,” the boss does want improvements.

 Busy summer for Sens?

Senators blank

Nobody will be calling for Eugene Melnyk to “blow up” the Senators this summer.

But GM Bryan Murray is going to have to do some bridge building over a couple of big holes that will be left on defence.

Unlike Heatley or Yashin , Senators centre can take good with bad in nation’s capital

Dany Heatley wanted out because his feelings were hurt.

Partly by a coach who “diminished” his role, if you actually bought that, but also by the valid criticisms being written and said of him.

With about $49 million committed to salaries next season, there will be changes

The Senators will do some spring cleaning Monday at Scotiabank Place — about eight weeks before they had hoped.

While they’ll meet with Senators GM Bryan Murray and coach Cory Clouston before going their separate ways following a 4-3 overtime defeat to the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 6 Saturday, some players will be saying goodbye for the final time.
