Montreal Lands kaberle

The Montreal Canadiens acquired defenceman Tomas Kaberle from the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday in exchange for defenceman Jaroslav Spacek.

This season, Kaberle has nine assists in 29 games with the Hurricanes, including four points in his last two games. With Andrei Markov on injured reserve after undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery, Kaberle may be called upon to help out with the power play.

Upon hearing of the trade Friday morning, Kaberle said he was shocked to hear the news but welcomed a trade back to a Canadian city where hockey is the #1 sport.

After a lengthy career with the Toronto Maple Leafs, Kaberle was dealt to Boston last season and helped the Bruins win a Stanley Cup.

     "helped" the Bruins

Holy goalie depth in Minny. Backstrom, Harding and now this Hackett kid. Not a bad situation there.

  3. LeafsNation4Ever says:

Kaberle is being sent to all the teams I hate.

    All of them.
  4. TheLeafNation91 says:

Even the word "helped" was exaggerated in this article.

Montreal has to deal with the worst contracts in the league.

    7 million= Gomez
    5 million= Markov
    4 million= Cole
    4 million= Kaberle
    6 million= Cammalleri
    5 million= Gionta

That is 31 million dollars to players that could be making less.

    What they should be paid?

    Gomez= 3 million
Markov= 3.5 million (based on injury)
    Cole=3.5 million
    Kaberle= 3 million
    Cammalleri= 5 million
    Gionta= 4.5 million

That is 22.5 million= Nearly 9 million dollars in savings.

You can get a significant player or two for that.

this could turn into a good trade for montreal. Kabby isnt the most confident guy around though and with everythings thats happened to him he could have a very tough time getting back to his game. Then again maybe he can use it as fuel to spark a fire under him. I think he can turn things around eventually… hope so at least.

I get home from work today and hear that the habs made a trade ………..excitedly or disaappointedly i checked to see who they acquired and i found out it's kaberle.the only thing i could think of is this trades reecks of despareation and gauthier is trying to save his job, kaberle will help the p.p. with him dishing it to subbanif this moves helps the p.p move up from 26th into the top 15 it will be a good deal and we'll make the playoffs, but with kaberle now locked in i guess you can say good bye to josh gorges!but i guess i will wait to see how this works for us before i really comment on it!

question to leafsnation or reinjosh ,or other leafs fans
how is kaberle passing ability on the p.p?.and will cammalleri benefit from kaberle'spassing ability because of cammy's 1 timer from the half wall?

  8. LeafsNation4Ever says:

All you will see is Kaberle passing.

  9. Boston_Bruins says:

    Don't get your hopes up.

  10. leafmeister says:

I dislike the deal mainly because of the length of Kaberle's term. For a team with such bad contracts, they need to spend what they have left well, and Kaberle just isn't money well spent any more.

As for his play; he is an excellent passer, and a smooth skater. His effectiveness on the PP is limited at best these days since he really doesn't have that great a shot. Will he vault the power play 10+ spots? No. He may not even help at all, teams figured out Kabby's powerplay formula pretty fast. He will help with the transition game, and will contribute offense occasionally, but he is a shadow of his former self. Also, he is a defensive liability and half, make no mistake about that. Price will have to be on edge whenever he is on the ice.

It is a pretty stupid trade if you ask me.

  11. MystifoLeafs says:

Kaberle actually has one of the most accurate shots in the league he just never uses it. As for passing he is an amazing passer but they will know where the puck is going so really he might as well be ineffective. Not the same as he used to be.

  12. TheLeafNation91 says:

You know what? Last year I would have agreed with you, especially about teaming him with Subban; however, while thinking of the PP benefits he could bring to Montreal I remembered somethig.

I looked at Phaneuf's play. He was not an effective player on the PP until Kaberle left. Now that he's paired with Liles or when he was paired with Gunner, he has been much better on the PP since.

Then I looked at Chara. He did not help Boston at all, especially when Chara's the biggest threat on the PP right now in the league. Especially when Boston did not score one PP goal in the finals.

I came to the conclusion that he is more liable then a positive contribution to a team. His defence sucks, he's pretty soft, and since he's one-dimensional on the PP…It is not worth it. Look how bad Carolina is now.

  13. TheLeafNation91 says:

Yeah, if I were you, I would not argue that whole "shot accuracy" thing.

If you have a good shot in this league, you use it.

  14. JoelLeafs says:

    Yup, you got the joke.

  15. senators_choke says:

It seems every year, Montreal's defense has more injuries than the German army.

It's known Kabby is over the hill but this is a desperation move. When you're at a party and wanna sleep with someone, you'll even take the ugliest chick around.

  16. THENOTORIOUS says:

Gauthier really hurt the Habs this time and why isn't Molson doing anything to stop this??? Even if Kaberle racks up 60 pts, it's still a bad trade for Montreal, Spacek was going to free up some needed cap space for next year so we could attempt to resign some key players but now its pretty much impossible even if Gomez was abducted by aliens it still wouldn't free enough cap space to resign Kostitsyn, Gorges, Subban and Price!

Price alone will get at least 7mil/year, do the habs trade Subban, or let go Gorges and Kostitsyn so we could get a one dimensional players that pretty much can only play on the PP in Kaberle.

Since day one Gauthier has been hurting this team and so does Martin, Geoff Molson wake the Fack-up and do something!!!

The worst is I bet Montreal will just miss the playoffs and will be stuck with yet another bad selection at this year draft.

But yet Molson, Gauthier and Martin always act as if everything is OK, the habs are now one of the weakest and softest team in NHL, I feel so bad for Carey Price.

  17. THENOTORIOUS says:

Hey Lafleur! Anyway you look at it, that move really hurts the Habs, Of course Kaberle is much better than Spacek but Spacek was turning UFA after this season, now we are stuck with Kaberle for 2 more years!

Man I really hate Gauthier and Martin, they are such of incompetent douche bags, I would take back Houle and Tremblay if it meant the end of Gauthier and Martin!

  18. THENOTORIOUS says:

Gomez worth 3 millions, who are u kidding, Gomez isn't worth 500K, let alone 3 millions.

I think that will all the taxes in Quebec that Gionta and Cole aren't overpaid.

As for Cammalleri I think he's only worth around 4 mil/year.

What i don't understand is why does people keep complaining about Andrei Kostitsyn when u have guys like Gomez, Cammy, Kaby ect.. making that kind of money and doing half of what AK brings to this team.

  19. Steven_Leafs says:

Quote: Even if Kaberle racks up 60 pts, it's still a bad trade for Montreal,

really? If a defenseman making 4M gets 60 points you still think Montreal would have lost the deal? Even if this trade didn't happen and Montreal had the cap space to sign another defenseman at free agency, they would love a player who can get 60 points, knowing full well one wont be available for 4M.

Obviously Kaberle will not get 60 points a season but still, if he produces anywhere near that then this trade will be a HUGE win.

  20. THENOTORIOUS says:

I also remember the Habs(Gauthier) not wanting to resign Hamrlik cause he wanted a 2 year deal at 3.5 mil/year , Gauthier is either really bad at Math or he's just a retard, the odds are he's a retard!

  21. lafleur10 says:

HEY THE NOTORIUS! how are you man i really hate martin with a passion ,i never liked him from the start i hope this move fail and we miss the playoffs and gauthier and martin get fired

  22. mojo19 says:

I know it sucks. Goes to show even further that this was a Paul Maurice signing, more so than Jim Rutherford. Kaberle was a beast for Maurice, logging huge minutes, putting up 60+ pts. But they couldn't rekindle that.

Still Kaberle actually looked really good in his first game for the Habs. Hopefully we see more of the Kaberle who wasn't performing well in Carolina and Boston. Sorry Tomas.
  23. mojo19 says:

I don't think he has a job next season. They'll probably let him ride out most of this year but if Montreal is not in a playoff spot late in the season, then I think they have to fire Gauthier. Just too many high priced veterans on long term deals, any way you slice it, its too much.

  24. lafleur10 says:

i agree gauthier is a retard and he needs to go! NOTORIOUS who would you like to see us hire as g.m.? i have a name that i think would be a very good g.m. julien brisebois what do you think?

  25. TheLeafNation91 says:

I would suggest going after Nonis…But I think Burke would axe murder

  26. lafleur10 says:

LN91 i would like to see nonis get a chance in mtl but if the rumors are right about the candidates having to speak french then he won't get a sniff unfortunately ,neither would jim nill in detroit who i think would and will be the next great g.m. in the league. if the criteria is speaking fench then our options are very limited so that's where julien brisebois comes in(who was with us before he left he was our capollogist) to go to tampa bay with yzerman to become the lightning's assistant g.m.

  27. THENOTORIOUS says:

a win at what cost? Gorges, Price, Kostitsyn or Subban, no thanks keep Kaberle and his 60 pts. I was tryimg to show that no matter what the Habs are Facked financialy.

  28. THENOTORIOUS says:

I'm French and i hate that the Habs always have to have a french GM or Coach, what kind of bullsh!t is that, is it because the medias in Montreal are too retarded to translate an after game conference, it must be?? The only french guy I would like to see in Montreal is Patrick Roy but he'll never accept a position there, not as long as the habs carry contracts like Gomez, Cammalleri and markov!

  29. JoelLeafs says:

Who would replace him? Any bilingual coaches on the market?

  30. TheLeafNation91 says:

    Patrick Roy

  31. JoelLeafs says:

Possible, I suppose. Although the last time he was hired as head coach he was already the owner and GM of the team…

  32. TheLeafNation91 says:

Only French-Canadian coach I could think of that is available right now.

  33. Steven_Leafs says:

I see your point, they definitely wont be able to afford all of Gorges, Price, Kostitsyn, Subban, Gill now with Kaberle. But I'd give up Gorges and Gill for a 60 point producer anyday. lol.

Although to be honest, I think they will just buyout Gomez. He is making 5.5M and 4.5M in his last 2 years of his contract reducing the cap amount by half for the next 2 years and only adds 1.667M in cap 2 years after that. Although considering the lower salary amount and high cap hit he might make a good pickup on waivers for a cap-floor team.

Highly doubtful he ever gets picked up on waivers but come to think of it he probably would  on re-entry waivers, the cap hit would be the same the first season, and even less on season 2 while giving a cap floor team a 3.7M contract paying only 2.75M/2.25M in cash. Not too bad.

  34. lafleur10 says:

    marc crawford,bob hartley

  35. lafleur10 says:

I TOTALLY AGREE i think that being gm of the canadiens should matter if you speak french or not it should come down to the best man available for the jobregardless of language he speaks like it used to be! roy however would be a great choice as well, but he won't go there unless he has full atonomy to make the changes he wants, however i think like i said we'll probably see julien brisebois as the next g.m. of the habs

  36. HABSSTAR says:

What I want to know is why the HELL is Gomez still in Montreal and not sitting on a bench in Hamilton?

  37. THENOTORIOUS says:

Who knows??? He's not scoring, he's not passing, he plays terrible in defense, he doesn't win that many draws, why isn't he in Hamilton yet is beyond me??? I guess he's good without the puck and great in the dressing room???

They should get rid of Gomez and hire me, In my beer league I'm also great without the puck and probably one of the best guy in the dressing room and i would only ask for .500k/season!
