As we head towards the NHL trade freeze that kicks in Friday at 3pm et, you’ve got a number of teams – not that many – but there are some teams that want to sell.

The Carolina Hurricanes are one of them. They could have had a deal done for Ray Whitney with the L.A. Kings but that didn’t work because of contract issues. Matt Cullen is a guy who could be gone. Same for, Aaron Ward, Stephane Yelle, Erik Cole, Andrew Alberts; the list goes on and on for Jim Rutherford and the Hurricanes. It would not surprise me if one of those bodies was moved before the deadline.

Update: The Hurricanes traded Matt Cullen to the Ottawa Senators for defenceman Alexandre Picard and a second round pick.

Alex Ponikarovsky of the Maple Leafs is most definitely in play. If you get a second-round pick for Dominic Moore, what do you get for Ponikarovsky? Probably the same, a second-round pick, and there’s lots of talk that he could be on the move by 3pm as well.

Andreas Lilja is a player who is conditioning right now in Grand Rapids. The Detroit Red Wings need a roster spot, and they need some cap space for him. As a result, the Red Wings are likely to either trade or waive somebody. Lilja is a big body and they think he can help even though he’s been out for a year with concussion problems since a fight with Shea Weber last year, but he may be a big part of the puzzle on the blue line for Detroit going forward.
