As we head towards the NHL trade freeze that kicks in Friday at 3pm et, you’ve got a number of teams – not that many – but there are some teams that want to sell.

The Carolina Hurricanes are one of them. They could have had a deal done for Ray Whitney with the L.A. Kings but that didn’t work because of contract issues. Matt Cullen is a guy who could be gone. Same for, Aaron Ward, Stephane Yelle, Erik Cole, Andrew Alberts; the list goes on and on for Jim Rutherford and the Hurricanes. It would not surprise me if one of those bodies was moved before the deadline.

Update: The Hurricanes traded Matt Cullen to the Ottawa Senators for defenceman Alexandre Picard and a second round pick.

Alex Ponikarovsky of the Maple Leafs is most definitely in play. If you get a second-round pick for Dominic Moore, what do you get for Ponikarovsky? Probably the same, a second-round pick, and there’s lots of talk that he could be on the move by 3pm as well.

Andreas Lilja is a player who is conditioning right now in Grand Rapids. The Detroit Red Wings need a roster spot, and they need some cap space for him. As a result, the Red Wings are likely to either trade or waive somebody. Lilja is a big body and they think he can help even though he’s been out for a year with concussion problems since a fight with Shea Weber last year, but he may be a big part of the puzzle on the blue line for Detroit going forward.

there is no way Burke will trade Poni for a 2nd rounder. Why? This does nothing for the team and the chances that they will get someone oh his cailber ( not to mention language skills for other players) is like 1%

If he gets traded he is worth much more than a 2nd rounder. Who predicts this stuff?

    I agree:
Ponikarovsky is in his prime & he has 1 short of 20 goals this season so far & theres still plenty of games left to play… Moore got a 2nd round pick & he has 8 goals & 9 assists this season, so definately deserves more.
I say atleast a 2nd roud pick & a prospect or roster player.

kind of surprised the hawks decided to shed cap before the offseason, but they got a very good return given the situation. good job by the wild to land barker

I like this trade for both teams as well. As you i am suprised they traded Barker now. What i wanna know is where all these posters on TSN get off talking about how bad Barker is, while Jonnson is awesome. Minn wins trade right now, Chi could depending on how Leddy develops and If kim stayed at a cheap rate allowing them to trade other high cap hits. I believe they are still in cap trouble next year, no?

Cam Barker vs. Kim Johnsson and Nick Leddy

Pretty good return for a very slow 3rd pairing offensive d-man with 14 points in 50 games.

This should put a stop to those crazy pipedreamers claiming guys like Versteeg, Byfuglien, Sharp and cie will be shipped out of town for 3rd rounders due to cap constraints.

Come on, man. Let's have this site fixed!  I've been trying to post stuff in other articles and it gets rejected.

  7. leafy says:

Don't you find you can't post anything on some articles? Some technical glitch with this site.

  8. brott says:

I'd much rather just keep him, he should also be given an "A"

  9. bbruins37 says:

ive been able to post something in every article ive tried

  10. leafy says:

I think I figured out the problem. I can't cut and paste from notepad where I do all my typing faster. I have to enter text directly otherwise it won't post it.
