By Jim Matheson,

Raffi Torres was a healthy scratch late for the Buffalo Sabres in their series with the Boston Bruins. He didn’t score in the 18 games after the Sabres got him from the Columbus Blue Jackets. He had just seven assists, hammering home Raffi’s nagging inconsistency. He has always been a streak scorer with a penchant for hitting hard that keeps opponents wary, but he had only 28 shots and just 14 penalty minutes in his time with the Sabres. He’s going to have a tough time getting a nice payday as an unrestricted free agent on July 1.

The Nashville Predators will come up with the money to re-sign Patrick Hornqvist , but they don’t have enough for unrestricted free agent defenceman Dan Hamhuis , who’s probably a $4-million US guy, not a $2.2-million man. Hamhuis is exactly what the Minnesota Wild need — a solid shutdown guy.

Here’s something I can definitely see happening: Coyotes unrestricted free-agent defenceman Zbynek Michalek signing with the Ottawa Senators to play with his winger brother, Milan . They were teammates on the Czech Olympic team. but they could easily be NHL roomies as well.

The Capitals will be overhauled this summer: they’ll let goalie Jose Theodore walk away, going with Semyon Varlamov as their No. 1 guy. Second-line centre Brendan Morrison and defenceman Shaone Morrisonn are likely in the same boat as unrestricted free agents. They’ll have to decide whether to trade forward Tomas Fleischman , who had a solid season with 51 points, but was scratched in the biggest game of the season Wednesday against Montreal, which is never a good sign for long-term employment.

Considering the low price tag and the style of game he plays i can see Brian Burke going after a guy like Raffi Torres….. at worst he can be a 3rd line physical presence with the potential to fill in the 2nd line role in emergency.

also could this give the Leafs an oppertunity to swap Tomas Kaberle with Washington?…. considering they will be overhauling the roster. Kaberle is just their type of guy. High scoring and don't be taken away by hi +/-. consider all the high + guys on Capitals such as Mike Green. that stat gets inflated when ur team is the highest scoring compared to what kaberle had last season in Toronto…… Kaberle/Green duo would be deadly. imagine the PP
