Morrow should be Canes’ free-agent target

As the next generation of would-be Carolina Hurricanes goes through the July ritual of development camp, the current generation still needs some help. While the Hurricanes continue to sniff around free-agent defenseman Ron Hainsey, there’s another player who may fill a bigger need.

There is one free agent still out there who was a teammate of Hurricanes coach Kirk Muller with the Dallas Stars, a 34-year-old left wing who scored 12 goals in 44 games last season, although his contributions here would go far beyond production.

Brenden Morrow is still out there.

Morrow’s agent, Brad Devine, confirmed via email Wednesday that he talked with the Hurricanes earlier this summer and expected to talk with them again. Meanwhile, doors appear to be closing at other more likely destinations, like Montreal and Detroit.

Whether the Hurricanes could even afford him remains uncertain. The Hurricanes have almost $5 million in cap space, but they’re up against their internal budget with a payroll of $59.3 million. They could maybe add another million and change, but they would likely have to move a contract to add Morrow, just as they would to add Hainsey, a rumored target.

Hainsey would be a fantastic addition to the Hurricanes’ defense, but unless they’re moving Joni Pitkanen to make room,

It will be interesting to see where Morrow ends up and for how much.

Philly is still the team to watch going forward.IMO
Do they just let Pronger go on LTIR and squeak under the cap? They would still have 8 D and could send down a guy like Gervais to clear a little more room. They have big cap hits coming off the books next year with Timonen and Mezaros being UFA. I doubt they re-sign Timonen who turns 39 at end of season unless he is willing to take a huge paycut. So, do the stand pat?
Do they try and make a deal for a quality player while trying to move a high priced D? The most sense would seem to be to try and package Simmonds and Mezaros. Simmonds is at $3.975 mil and Mezaros at $4mil for this season. The 2 may get a decent return.
Philly needs a top pairing 4 D who is a PP guy with grit. Streit was a nice addition, but is 35. As mentioned Timonen is 38 and there isn’t much coming up in the Flyer organization. I could see Phaneuf being a target of Holmgren’s, especially if he reaches UFA.

I would like to see the Leafs move Liles for a 5th to the Islanders or something to put them in a position to take advantage of a team in cap trouble if there is a player they could use involved.
