Wow… didn't see that coming!!
Ribeiro – Modano – Nagy
Not too shabby!
So………. a mid-late 1st rounder and a 4th liner.
I’ll do the job for free Gretz, just get rid of Barnett.
Gainey misses the boat!!
I kind of expected Dallas to pick up more of a goal scorer than a setup man, but I'm sure Nagy will still help. This team could be dangerous if it could consistantly put the puck in the net. They have a solid D and goalie, just need more than 2 goals every night!
I thought ESPN's headline, "High-scoring Nagy traded to Stars…" was amusing since he only has 8 goals this year!!!

Yeah, now maybe he'll start producing on my Fantasy team.
Gainey misses the boat? No he didn't. The habs entire roster is made up of set-up guys, he needs to acquire a guy that can put the puck in the back of the net.
dang!
oh well. good pick up by the Stars as this guy is just entering his prime. i dont think they are giving up too much here either. their 1st rounder will likely be in the 20-25th overall range anyways.
its likely Nagy will also be signed long term by the Stars considering the price they paid.

Anybody remember the last good trade Barnett made?
Or the last good player he drafted for that matter.
God this guy's an idiot.
could have used him too help Samsonov, Considering none of the other set-up men could.
yeah! same here.
Oh ya, right, all those set-up men! Like all of the Habs goal-scorers couldn’t use a set-up man right now? They have goal scoers i.e. Ryder, Higgins, Kovalev, so perhaps someone you knows how to get them the puck would be of use.
I was about to post a comment to totally rip Barnett, but given what I've seen, I don't think I need to. Mik and lint have pretty much said all that needs to be said.
Proof positive that some men just should not be NHL general managers.
I traded him the first week of the fantasy season for Semin and Parise.
Great pick up for Dallas – potential playoff line up:
Morrow – Modano – Lehtinen
Nagy – Ribeiro – Lindros
Jokinen – Halpern – Barnes
Hagman – Stefan – Miettenen
*Erikson, Barnaby, Lunqvist, Ott
Forwards look good!
And sorry to 92-93, I know how much you were lobbying for Nagy. Who's on your radar now?
what boat?the boat that would send him out of playoffs? no ganey didn'T miss anything…i don't even see why mtl were even rumored to get nagy…mtl don't need another european set-up guyon their roster…they need heart and grit!they also need a center…..it's very good gainey passed on nagy!
HAHAHAHA…..ribeiro on a 1st line in playoffs? it smells like golf to me!!!
i hope the boat reference was unintentional. otherwise, that was in amazingly poor taste.
well i am hoping Smyth will be available in the offseason. but i doubt it. Same thing with Modin, but i think Columbus will resign him. I dunno. My only hope is for Tucker to be traded for some prospects or picks or both and the Leafs to go forward with the team they have now. anyone who is foolish enough to think Peca, Tucker, and Wellwood will be the difference between finishing out of the playoffs and winning the cup can go on being foolish. i just want to see a smart/shrewd move by the leafs – one that would free up some cap space in the offseason to get a top-line UFA forward.
WOW!!! I am going to go ahead and demand Barnett's firing IMMEDIAETLY! I am glad they got rid of Nagy, but I think we could have gotten someone better then Tjarnqvist. And to trade him to a rival???? R u stupied Barnett??????? We better keep Doaner now.
Maybe, but he has a very good chance of being in the playoffs unlike his former team.
Whats really amazing is how Dallas' top two players both have under 40 points (Ribeiro being the 2nd ) and the team still has 78 points.
So adding Nagy is a great move. They really need to boost there scoring.
hey i was calling for JFJ to trade Antropov (18 pts in 28 games), Suglobov (prospect), and Bell (#5-6 D-guy, potential top-4 D-guy, former CHL defenceman of the year), AND a 2nd rounder for Nagy. i never realized Barnett would take so little in return though.
Montreal doesn’t need a guy like Nagy they need a Bill Guerin, Todd Bertuzzi, or Gary Roberts. Montreal is too soft… a bunch of speedy figure skaters.. no gritt! Thats why Emery was not afraid to swing his stick around because he knew no one would do anything about it…. and no one did.
I wonder if JFJ really tried to pick up Nagy. I don’t doubt he’s trying to acquire someone. When the Leafs are one point away from a playoff spot and with all the injuries, JFJ has to do something. I’m just worried who it may be.
I don't understand everyone bashing what Barnett did here. Nagy is a rental player, he's a UFA at seasons end… if he wants to return to Phoenix he can sign back in the offseason. They aren't making the playoffs and Dallas probably will… I'm sure Barnett threw Nagy's name out there to all GMs and saw what was available and he jumped on the best offer.
They get a player and a 1st round pick for a rental player… thats not that bad, no matter who the player is. The whole thing about trading him to a divisional foe means squat, actually if anything it helps Phoenix since Dallas loses their draft pick and Tjarnqvist.
We don't see everything that goes on behind closed doors but I'm sure Barnett got a few different offers and picked the one he thought would help his club… and why not slightly weeken the Stars in the future while they're at it.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
That does sound cheap. Nagy was definately going to walk away from the club tho, so they did need to get something for him. I can understand the motivation for making this deal. However, I would think if he waited a bit longer he could have squeezed a bit more out of someone.
i do agree with you, i dont think JFJ even tried to acquire Nagy or stupidly thought that Phoenix were asking for 'too much' for him (obviously they weren't asking for much if you look at what Dallas gave them).
i also agree JFJ has to do something, but acquiring someone is not necessarily it. I actually think he has to be a seller with Tucker … and THEN and only then be a buyer to try to replace Tucker with a rental player like Roberts. and the leafs dont have to give up much to get him.
Is it still too soon for those jokes…???
That was a beauty trade for you!
agreed.
his draft record is abysmal. in fairness though, his 04 draft pick blake wheeler may be a decent nhl player.
I don't see what's the big kerfuffle either. Were you Coyote fans hoping for 2 or 3 first round picks for Nagy?
what coyotie’s fans?
PLEASE, obviously not intended to be in poor taste. Was not thinking about that tragic event and would never mock something that is so sad.
yah, he smoked calgary for reinprecht, giving mike leclerc(not playing in the nhl) and brian boucher(3rd string in chicago)
sutter wanted better goaltending, but thats alot to give up and since reinprecht resigned. chalk that up as a good trade
Thank you. Someone needed to say that. I'm a huge Coyotes fan and I hate to lose Nagy but let's be realistic. Everyone knew he was leaving. Everyone knows (from past experience) that he will be an extremely difficult resign, I just didn't want to see they got only a 2nd round pick – but I realistically thought it may happen.
Nagy has got tremendous potential and I think will really bloom in a new environment but with only 8 goals on the season and a history of late season injury, a first round choice is looking pretty good to me.
Can any of you critics name the last rental player with 8 goals to be picked up for a 1st round pick AND a character player? Didn't think you could.
All that being said, I do wish Nagy luck at breaking out the way I believe he will (even though I can't stand the stars).
Hey, I'm a Coyotes fan.
…and to answer the previous question – I also didn't think 2 or 3 first rounders would ever happen. Given the situation, I think the Yotes did as best they could in this deal. Remember (ignoring the potential I believe he will soon demonstrate) Nags only has 8 goals this season, a history of injury, and a reputation of being a difficult resign. I think the Yotes did just fine.
Here are a couple:
Chris Gratton and Ossi Vanaanen to Colorado for Derek Morris and Keith Ballard – Steal for the Yotes.
Eric Westrum (I do like him) to Minnesota for Zybenik Michalek. Great move for Yotes.
Tyson Nash (loved him) for Tellqvist. Boy did that pay off.
Reinprect and Sauve from the Flames for Mike LeClerc and Boucher – Still paying off for the Yotes – not so much so for the Flames.
That's just 4 that quickly came to mind. Could you name 4 equally bad ones that happened in the past year and a half (beginning of 05-06 season like those I listed)? And don't include the Nagy trade – I've outlined my reasons in a different thread below. I've never been a big Barnett fan, and have a hard time believing I'm defending him, but let's be realistic here. He has improved tremendously over the past couple of seasons.
Drafts?
Peter Mueller
Kevin Porter
Martin Hanzel
Keith Yandle
Enver Lisin
Just to name a few. Obviously its too early to know the impact of these drafts, but they are all looking quite promising. Also too early to tell about many others taht I did not list. Everyone knows htat the Yotes have had a difficult time drafting that is why Barnett, as GM, recently revamped the entire drafting process – including hiring Rich Sutter to head the operation. And its obviously too early to critise or compliment the moves he made there.
Now I've never been a big Barnett fan, and have a hard time believing I'm defending him, but let's be realistic here. He has improved tremendously over the past couple of seasons. So, the long and short of it is taht I think most people made their judgements about Barnett in his first couple of years and have since refused to even consider what he is currently doing. Again, don't think I'm a Barnett supporter either, I just think he's not getting his fair shake in this blog. The guy has vastly improved from where he started and isn't nearly as bad now as people here seem to think.
