New Development On McCabe Story

According to Nik Kypreos of Sportsnet (, McCabe has rescinded his NMC to possibly move to the Panthers.

mikster’s note: I’ve commented around (HTR,, McKeen’sHockey Boards) that Bryan McCabe would be the ideal target for the Panthers and that the Panthers would be his ideal target as well. I know for a fact that he has good friendly connections here in South Florida, one a retired player and the other an active player. While I would like to share information with my fellow hockey fans on, I am not a rumor monger and I respect information given to me.

If I were you, I’d expect to see McCabe come to Florida, but don’t cout on Jay Bouwmeester heading the other way. It may very well be either Van Ryn or Cory Murphy heading to Toronto in the deal, with Peltonen.

Just saw this on sportsnet.. and i think Mike Van Ryn for Bryan McCabe would be the right deal

  2. leafy says:

McCabe could be traded within the next 24-48 hours.  Consider August 15th is the deadline to trade Pavel Kubina, before his NTC kicks in.

Therefore, the Leafs certainly want to move McCabe before that deadline.  It's the only way to guarantee at least one of these large salaries will be moved.

Van Ryn is a solid D.  Even Murphy is no slouch.  But I'd really want J-Bo, who would require more than just McCabe to pry away from Florida.

  3. nordiques100 says:

salary wise, van ryn makes the most sense coming back.

the leafs will have to take salary back. its how most deals will be structured involving such a big salary like mccabe.

i believe something more will need to be added by the panthers. something like a 2nd and/or a second tier young player like a greg campbell or anthony stewart.

a really good player the leafs should go after is bryan allen. but i think the cats will be building their defence around him and ballard along with top prospect keaton ellerby.

he is definitely not enough to bring bouwmeester.

leaf nation shouldnt expect much for mccabe. they are afterall the ones who have practically booed him out of toronto.

  4. Rico420 says:

Isn't Jaybo one of those guys like Eric Brewer analysts jerk off over and he hasn't really done anything to garnish that attention?

Van Ryn for McCabe and Tony Stewart in the deal as well.

  5. Kramer says:

This is big big big news!!!!  I hope it happens soon cuz I'm bored out of my wits.

Anyone watching the Olympics?  Love that women's beach volleyball event.  My favorite event of the Olympics next to women's gynastics.

  6. mojo19 says:

Jay-Bo is just like that, but a high draft pick who is still young who has shown flashes of why he was taken so high….It's not time to write him off yet, he could still be a stud.

  7. mojo19 says:

Van Ryn and Peltonen? Rrrrr, not feeling it, but I guess if Cliffy wants to move McCabe that wouldn't be a terrible return.

  8. lukeleim says:

I don't like Bryan McCabe for Van Ryn and Peltonen. This is a terrible move for the Maple Leafs. Van Ryn doesn't have any value and only played 20 games last season, registering 2 points. Futhermore, Florida has 8 NHL calibre defensemen.

  9. mikster says:

I’d take Tlusty, McCabe, and Poni for Bo, Van Ryn/Murphy, 2nd, and Peltonen.

  10. cam7777 says:

Hope they try and sing Stajan's praises and throw him in the deal for Bouwmeester.  McCabe, Stajan and Colaiacovo for Bouwmeester and Van Ryn.  Then try and trade Van Ryn to Tampa for Halpern.

if fletcher could make that happen, that would be okay with me…

  11. Bure96 says:

Dude, that Florida trade is brutal.

More like Schenn, and Antropov for J Bo, which wouldn't make any sense for Toronto either, so that's why a trade involving Bouwmeester and Toronto will never work out.

  12. pezzz says:

    seriously, dream on lol.

It would take Tlusty, McCabe and Poni only for Bo

  13. pezzz says:

Van Ryn is still a solid top 4 d-man, and the Leafs would have to take Peltonen only to equal the salaries. With McCabe, the Panthers would have a fantastic d-corp.

    JBo – Allen
    Ballard – McCabe
    Welch – Murphy
    Skrastins – Boynton

If they do this trade, I hope the Panthers can add a 3rd round pick (or 2nd) and seize Ponikarovsky out of Toronto. He's no 2nd liner, but he'd add a little bit of scoring depth the Panthers lack.

  14. Kramer says:

I think I saw Elvis last night.

  15. cam7777 says:

you're on drugs if you think he's worth that.  you're either highly over evaluating J Bo or highly under evaluating Antropov and Schenn.  Antropov would net them at least a 1st round pick, and probably a prospect if they trade him at the deadline.  Every GM in the league wants a player like Antropov.  Him straight up for Bouwmeester would be fine.  Yes Bouwmeester has all the tools to be a stud, and yes he shows flashes of greatness, but the fact is, he's never seen a playoff game, and he's excelled on a team like Flordida in a market that doesn't give a shit.  He's not Scott Niedermeyer.

Also, this is Florida you're talking about.  Even if the trade was unfair, it wouldn't make it any less likely to happen.

  16. habswinthecup-again says:

Nik Kypreos is almost as big an idiot as Eklund is!

  17. mikster says:

Not really. He is a UFA in 2009. I’d want the main deal to involve Tlusty for the Panthers.

  18. mojo19 says:

Tlusty was a pretty high first round pick only 2 summers ago. He's 20. He's got a ton of skill. The only way I'd move him for J-Bo is if others are included like Mikster originally said, or if Jay-Bo would definitely sign an extension guaranteed with Toronto.

  19. mojo19 says:

Schenn and Antropov for Jay-Bo…hahahaha.I know that was a joke but your still crazy. Florida isn't exactly dealing Bowmeister out of a position of power here. He wanted to go to arbitration they ended up giving him a year, he's pretty much guaranteed to not be back with Florida next year.

If they are interested in McCabe I don't know why it wouldn't be possible for these two sides to work out a deal that *could* include Jay-Bo going to Toronto in some type of multi-player swap (multi player swaps are a Cliff Fletcher staple, something he's known for and a reason why he's already been inducted into the HHOF)

  20. Bure96 says:

Of coarse I was only being half serious, but I just don't really see a trade that works.

In any deal the Panthers would want offense. There defense is loaded, they ned depth upfront or at least prospects.

So the only forward really that really has any value on the :eafs is Antropov. Matt Stajan is pretty good, and has some value, and I know for a fact half of the Leaf fans on here think Bouwmeester is worth Antropov and Stajan.

Why is he worth much more? Let's say Nik Antrpov's numbers are similiar to last years, and he gets 60 or so points, and then leave's as a free agent. Then it's pretty much a year from Antropov, and 3rd line production from Stajan (every teams needs a good checking, but the Panthers need legit top 6 forwards mre then 3rd line centers) for Bouwmeester. J Bo then become's a franchise defender in Toronto (which is still very likely, he's only 24, and is a former 3rd overall draft pick). That would be the most lopsided trade in NHL history. Hell even if Bouwmeester doesn't become a franchise player it still would only be fair if Antropov plays there for 5 years, and score's 60+ eeach year and Matt Stajan become's there captain. And if the Leafs were able to pull off a trade like that Bouwmeester would obviously realize there's at least some hope for the future in Toronto, and would sign 🙂

So I don't think any trade will involve a player on the Leafs roster. And the Leafs have some good prosects, Tlusty could be a solid top 6 guy, and so could Kulemin, but really the only guy there with future all star potential is Schenn. The Leafs want to build around Schenn, so he's going nowhere.

And there not trading a 1st round pick. They know that could mean losing Victor Hedman or John Tavares.

The only trade that could work I think would be Kaberle for J Bo straight up. Kaberle is under contract longer (and very cheap too), but Bouwmeester has bigger upside.

The Leafs shouldn't even consider trading for more defense. You guys are okay on the defense, but might have the offense in the NHL.

  21. Bure96 says:

Antropov for Bouwmeester would be a bad trade too. Both are just as likely to walk in the off season, but Bouwmeester will be a better player for that one season really. Bouwmeester would bring in so much at the deadline, Florida knows that, so why they hell would they trade him Nik Antropov.

And just read what I wrote to what I wrote to mojo19 too, because I don't want to write that out again lol

  22. lukeleim says:

Bryan McCabe and Alexei Ponikarovsky to the Florida Panthers for Mike Van Ryn and Michael Frolik.

  23. leafy says:

    McCabe Update

It now appears the McCabe trade with Florida will happen after Sept 1st.

The hold up has something to do with McCabe's signing bonus.

Sources say the trade involves McCabe + 1 other Leaf player.  Coming back will be at least one player, but it will NOT be Bouwmeester.  Please see link.

  24. Archion113 says:

Everyone realizes that getting more then a bag of pucks for McCabe is a good deal right?

  25. pezzz says:

    Frolik isn't moving.

McCabe and Ponikarovsky for Van Ryn and Peltonen

  26. Kramer says:

I gotta go to a job interview tomorrow.  I don't wanna work, but there's all these stupid monthly bills.

I'm gonna wear my Leafs tie for good luck. and then when interviewer sees the tie, he's gonna hire me for sure because he's gonna be a huge Leaf fan of course.

  27. lukeleim says:

That trade doesn't make sense for Toronto man. Id rather keep McCabe. If Fletcher makes this move, I'll fu**ing lose it.

  28. Bure96 says:

Why does every Leaf fan now think McCabe has value? In ANY trade involving McCabe the Leafs will be taking an overpriced player in return, NOT A FORMER 3RD OVERALL PICK, AND POSSIBILY FUTURE FRANCHISE DEFENSEMEN. If it's a package, no trade will involve J Bo.

  29. mikster says:

Frolik isn’t going anywhere, but if you want him, get ready to include Tlusty and Stajan then.

  30. pezzz says:

yes, he's saying a prospect/pick will come with Van Ryn in TO, but I can guarantee you Frolik isn't moving. He's their best prospect, along with Keaton Ellerby. so he's staying in Florida, 100%.

Anthony Stewart is a very probable choice, Gregory Campbell may as well move with Van Ryn. Or maybe even Kreps. But Frolik, Matthias and Booth aren't moving.

otherwise, it's gonna be a 2nd or 3rd round pick.

  31. papichulo71 says:

    FLA: McCabe
           2nd round pick in '09

    TOR: Van Ryn
            3rd round pick in '09

  32. nordiques100 says:

2nd in 09 went in the luke schenn trade.

2nd in 2010 is out of the question too. that went in the grabovski trade

  33. nordiques100 says:

if this has to wait til sept til this bonus that mccabe is due is over and done with, thats quite a bit of time for either another team to get in on this or this to completely fall apart.

i guess the latter just because the leafs are good at making a mess of something.

the word is van ryn coming back if this actually works out. its really a no brainer. the cats have a glut of Dmen so if they're getting one, they would like to move one out. secondly his 2.9 mil salary for the next 2 years will make mccabe's cap hit easier to swallow.

wouldnt shock me if the leafs were to find a 3rd team to get involved and take van ryn. he is another offensive defenceman they dont need.

  34. mojo19 says:

Ya but its supply and demand. If we get 5 or 6 teams interested and they all start throwing out offers, then all the sudden a bag of pucks isn't a good deal at all. Even if that's all he *should* be worth. know what im sayin

  35. NHLSlayer says:

Hey man, your so quick to send Antropov packing out of town from Florida after playing a year there, but fail to make any sort of claim to backup the fact that Bouwmeester is heading to UFA as well!

So, put the show on the other foot for a second!  If Antropov and Stajan decide Florida is the place to be, and Antropov becomes a top six forward for the Panthers with Stajan toiling around third line.  Meanwhile Bouwmeester doesn't want any part of a rebuild in Toronto after spending his entire career waiting for Florida to rebuild, and he leaves town after a year.  Who got the better deal?
