NHL EXPECTS TENTATIVE PUCK DROP DATE ON JAN. 19
The National Hockey League appears to be set on a tentative date for puck drop on Saturday, Jan. 19.
In a memo sent out on Sunday night, the NHL suggested that its expectation is to open camps as early as Saturday en route to a 48-game schedule that will commence seven days later.
“Depending on the timing of that process, and the NHLPA’s ratification process that is proceeding on a parallel track (although somewhat slower), we anticipate that Training Camps will open sometime between Saturday, January 12 and Monday, January 14,” read the memo.
“We are hoping that we will be in a position to commence a 48-game NHL Regular Season beginning on Saturday, January 19 (All of these dates remain tentative at this point).”
The NHL and the Players’ Association reached an agreement on the framework of a new collective bargaining agreement on Sunday to end the lockout that has been in place since mid-September. The league’s board of governors will convene in New York City to vote on the new CBA on Wednesday.

According to Carlyle, JVR will start on the wing. With that being said, this is what I expect the lineup to look like. (Not saying that I agree with it)

Okay, I know that Grabo is pretty much the ideal 2nd line center, but why the fuck are we going with Bozak on the first line, again? Seriously, what’s so wrong with trying him with Kessel and Lupul? Christ, Mac was very mediocre last season and I can’t even remember the other guy’s name.. something with a K I think.
I don’t think anyone would argue that he isn’t out best center, why always the 2nd line status? Am I missing something? If Bozak can put up 20/30 on the first line what would Grabo do?
Grabo doesn’t play with Kessel because there isn’t enough pucks for both of them.
I thought Mac was exactly as advertised last year. Pretty consistant and only lead the team in plus minus. His point totals would’ve been similar to last year if Kulimen didn’t drop off the face of the Earth. I would absolutely not give Mac away but he can be had for a reasonable price.
So if we’re getting Luongo, Burke obviously isn’t interested in a rebuild so why not extend Jamie Benn an offer sheet?
He’d be the perfect 1A center with upside and worst case scenario is Dallas matches, it’s not like the Stars have the pockets to push back somewhere down the line. Better yet threaten an offer sheet then try to work out a trade.
If Burke is going to get desperate to keep his job, I expect him to go after impact talent(s).

Yeah, though I don’t get why is ok to bend on Luongo ‘cheater’ contract.
I think after with ‘hooray the lockout is over’ stuff dies down, the media is going to feast on Burke. A bad year and it could get JFJ ugly. Burke’s gotta either do something big or hope the Leafs just happen to have a great year.
However I’d give anything for Benn, the dude bloodied up Iginla. The Leafs don’t need that in their top 6 or anything.
I keep hearing a lot about Evander Kane and his availability. Could be interesting.
I just don’t see the Jets being in a hurry to trade a talented yopung power forward like him. He will be given another chance or two.

Who will win the South East division? I think a lot of people would agree Washington is in contention, perhaps Carolina with the additions of J.Staal and Semin, and maybe perennial underachievers Tampa Bay with new goalie Anders Lindback.

I like this team – I think they have a good mix of skill and grit. Last year was a big step forward. X-factor could be Mueller, if he can return to pre-concussion form, they have a very interesting 1-2 punch down the middle with Weiss. Fleisch can also swing over to the middle if need be.

Really, though, this could be a major toss up. I think Carolina has a shot. Ward is always, but they have major additions to the top six and none have really had time to play together. I think the start of the season is going to be a weird one.
Ya I would agree, also Svatos is coming out to Panthers camp. He hasn’t been the same since some kind of foot injury or something.

Looks pretty good. Poni and Jokinen will add some size and depth up front. I don’t see them taking the division unless everything goes right, but they could be a playoff team.

THE LUONGO RULE
This is another rule from the league aimed at hammering current back-diving deals (front-loaded, “cheat deals.” However, this has changed from its original form when the NHL first proposed it in October.
In the original formula, if a player like Roberto Luongo was traded and retired before the end of his deal, the Canucks (the team who signed him to the contract) would assume his remaining $5.33-million cap early hit in retirement. The new rule in this tentative agreement is different. Now, for any contract in excess of six years, both teams involved in a trade on a contract like Luongo’s would be penalized if he retired before the end of his deal.
To wit: let’s say the Canucks trade Luongo soon. Luongo has played two years of his 12-year contract, the Canucks paying him $16.716 million in salary but only absorbing a $5.33 million cap hit each year. That’s a cap savings of $6.056 million over two years so far for Vancouver. Under this new rule, should the Canucks trade him now and he retires with three years left on his contract, Vancouver would be charged that $6.056 million in cap savings over the final three years left on his deal from 2019 to 2022. However, let’s say for argument’s sake Luongo gets traded to Toronto, the Maple Leafs also would be subject to cap penalties if Luongo retires before the end of his deal.
To wit, part 2: If Luongo were to play the next seven years of his deal in Toronto before retiring, the Leafs would be paying him $43.666 million in salary but only counting $37.31 million against the cap over those seven years, a cap savings of $6.356 million. So if Luongo retires with three years left on his deal (because his salary falls to $1.618 million in the 10th year and then $1 million in the last two years of the deal), the Leafs would get charged that $6.356 million on their cap spread evenly over the remaining three years of his deal.
And obviously, if players under these back-diving deals are never traded, but retire before the end of their deals (Marian Hossa in Chicago), their current teams get charged the cap savings spread evenly over the remaining years of the deal.
Well at least they’re balancing out the karma for those teams who thought they were being sneaky with the loop holes.
Also, can’t the NHL just take all draft picks away from New Jersey for the next 5 or 6 years since Lou Lamerello is the guy pretty much responsible for cap loop holes?
