Four NHL general managers in desperation mode

The NHL trade deadline may have been the final act for some general managers.

With only three weeks left in the season, all 30 teams tried to tweak at Wednesday’s cutoff to make trades, but a chosen few were more desperate than others because their jobs are on the line if they don’t make a playoff push.

Here’s a look at some GM’s in trouble:

  • Greg Sherman, Colorado: Many believe he’s in over his head and he’ll be the first one gone with coach Joe Sacco. The betting money is former star Joe Sakic takes on the lead role to try to get the Avs back to respectability.
  • George McPhee, Washington: Trying to save his butt, he dealt Filip Forsberg to the Predators for Martin Erat. The Caps might squeeze into a playoff spot, but Forsberg and Russian prospect Evgeny Kuznetsov have been available all season.
  • Jay Feaster, Calgary: Was getting rid of Jarome Iginla, Blake Comeau and Jay Bouwmeester enough to save Feaster? Hardly. A lot of speculation about the future of president Ken King, as well. The Flames’ situation is fluid.
  • Dale Tallon, Florida: He all but assured the fan base the club would make the playoffs this season. The signings of Sean Bergenheim, Alexei Kovalev and Ed Jovanovski were disastrous and the team has taken a major step back.

    I don’t understand Dale Tallon?

    He’s building something nice there…It needs time.

      His drafting has been fantastic. Unfortunately the rest of his GM game is terrible. He’s not great at trades, and his signings have been bad. He’s going the true traditional tank rebuild. It’s going to take a lot of time to rebuild that way. As in probably more like two seasons still. And he’ll have players that bust. Some that impress. But sooner or later his team will be decent.

      Feaster is going to become the next JFJ. He’ll leave in disgrace but leave the team with some great prospects that he helped draft. I almost guarantee that he’s dealing with pressure from ownership.

      McPhee’s move was interesting but not necessarily the worst. Erat’s underrated. Who knows what he could do with actual offensive players. Forsberg was a steap price to deal though.

        Tallon got Campbell for Olesz. Campbell came with a huge contract, which obviously Tallon signed him to in Chicago, but it was still a good move.

        HIs problem was Jovo and Upshall at the money they were getting. It made the team immediately more competitive but a year into those deals, Jovo is declining and Upshall is just not worth the money.

        Kulikov, Markstrom, Gudbransson, Huberdeau are nice building blocks though. Plus they’ll add another top 3 pick this year.
