NHL rumours: Habs eye ‘big splash’ trade

Ranked eighth in the Eastern Conference in goals scored, the Montreal Canadiens are reportedly looking to acquire a “top-tier” player, presumably a first-line forward, according to The Fourth Period.
Multiple sources told the magazine that general manager Marc Bergevin is trying to make a “big splash” in the trade market.

Bergevin, who became the 17th GM in Canadiens’ franchise history on May 2, 2012, has been looking for a first-line star since joining the team.

The Ottawa Sun says Rene Bourque, who has a limited no-trade clause and two years left on his deal after this season, is being dangled. On expiring contracts, Raphael Diaz and captain Brian Gionta are two assets that could be expendable; top defencemen P.K. Subban and Andrei Markov must be Bergevin’s re-signing priority here.
