NHL rumours: Stastny part of Habs’ big deal?

“The Canadiens have been scouting the Avs all year long,” writes Adrain Dater of the Denver Post. “While I don’t believe something ‘major’ is imminent, I do believe Montreal has targeted the Avs for a while now for something. It could be as little as trying to get John Mitchell, or something as big as a package involving Paul Stastny.”

The latter, of course, would be more interesting and in line with the “big splash” deal Montreal has been rumoured to be working on. Stastny ($6.6 million cap hit) will be a UFA on July 1, and the Avs own a bevvy of riches up front — the Habs’ area of concern.
Montreal currently has $3.25 million in cap space, so some juggling would be necessary for such an acquisition.
