NHL To Investigate the Leafs for Tampering
TSN is reporting that the Nhl is going to investigate the leafs for tampering due to Ron Wilsons remarks about Daniel and Henrick Sedin. The Globe and Mail is reporting that the Maple Leafs are under investigation by the NHL due to Wilson’s comments on the club’s interest in Daniel and Henrik Sedin prior to July 1st, the first day that unrestricted free-agents could test the market.
On Tuesday June 31st, Wilson told Toronto radio station The Fan 590 that:
“You’re hearing right now, and this sounds very contradictory but, there’s a real possibility, I would think, that we would be going after the Sedins. Let’s just speculate there.”
Maple Leafs general manager Brian Burke confirmed that the league was investigating the remarks.
“The league has indicated that they are looking into it, so we will have no public commentary at this time,” Burke told the Globe and Mail Monday night.
While NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly did not confirm that the league was investigating tampering allegations against the Maple Leafs, he did say that the Vancouver Canucks have not filed a complaint with the league.
“We wouldn’t normally comment on whether or not we were investigating a club for a potential tampering violation,” Daly told the Globe and Mail.
“No, the Canucks have not filed tampering charges.”

Burke is many things. A cheater, I dont believe, is one of them.

This is such a BS story, reporter jason Botchford of the Province wrote
"On June 30, Wilson was on Prime Time Sports, hosted by Bob McCown on The FAN590 in Toronto. He was asked an abstract question about the difference between North American and European players. Wilson quickly got off track, turned his attention toward the twins. He implied the Leafs planned to go after the Sedins on July 1 when they were scheduled to become unrestricted free agents".
As if to say that Wilson's intent all along was to tamper.Which is just plain dumb considering that if your going to tamper you don't do it thru the media. I mean look at Tampa Bay How do you explain them signing Ohlund to a HUGE contract in less then15 mins. No one sicked the NHL on them.
It doesn't surprise me though that it came from the Vancouver media seeing as how they always play the "Victim" when ever they feel they've been wronged.
here's the other issue That people are talking about, Is the comments that Lowe made when Burke accused him of tampering. The NHL investigated and found no wrong doing. So if they found no wrong doing and people are comparing this case to that of Burke Lowe saga,Then how can they find us guilty if these to cases are the same.
It's All a much ado about nothing.

By NHL rules expressing interest in a player under contract by another organization is tampering.

Can this really have legs considering Burke never even got the chance to talk to the twins. I'm sure had they entertained offers ten other teams would clearly have been in the mix. Everyone else could have connected the dots between the twins and Burke. I'm sure if Ken Hit***** said the same thing on a Columbus radio show it wouldn't be a story.
by no means am i a leafs fan but this story is b.s. all wilson" said that if the sedins were available that i assume that we would be going after them",that's just a comment how's that tampering?
Because by saying your team is interested in a player when their rights are owned by another team you give that player extra bargaining power to try and get a better contract. Wilson saying the leafs are interested on the radio is basically the same thing as Burke calling the twins before they are free agents saying don't sign a contract extension because I am going to offer you one. It does a few things
1.) Takes away the teams right to negotiate without competing against other clubs while the player is still their property.
2.) Gives the players unfair bargaining power (they can say "Give me more money now because so and so said they'll sign me)
3.) It opens the door for someone else to take a smaller step forward with bending the rules if they get away with it.

My opinion someone really hates the Leafs and got a hug bug up their ass against Burke and made this story hit the media – it's ridiculous but had Wilson said "we're going to be active in persuing the top unrestricted free agents I believe" instead of "we'll target in on these guys"…who the hell cares it's a joke that we are even talking about this I think.
But the NHL will probably give Wilson a fine or something absolutely redonkulous.
