NHL trade rumors: Flames like Matt Read, Senators looking for top-six forward

Elliotte Friedman brought up Philadelphia Flyers forward Matt Read in his 30 Thoughts column on Monday. With Read battling back from a rib injury, Friedman wrote about how teams respect the player’s toughness. Given that Philadelphia is looking for help on the back-end, Friedman stated without actually stating that any deal with the Calgary Flames for Jay Bouwmeester would likely include Read, via CBC.ca:

If Philly does any business with Calgary, know that Flames assistant GM John Weisbrod has chased Read for years.

* Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Sun believes it would be in the Ottawa Senators best interest to deal defenseman Sergei Gonchar prior to the deadline. However, no trade talks have occurred as of this time:

The Pittsburgh Penguins showed interest in bringing Gonchar back last summer, but nobody has called lately. The Boston Bruins need help for their blueline so they’ll be listed as a possible candidate.

* In terms of the Senators needs, general manager Bryan Murray expressed a desire to acquire a top-six forward. However, accomplishing such a feat will prove problematic given that he isn’t interested in trading one of their three goaltenders or their top prospects, via the Ottawa Sun:

“I’m certainly not going to give up a top young player at this point, but if there’s an ability to acquire someone who can help us as we go forward, absolutely […] I don’t know how you ever get a scorer in the NHL anymore, but if you can get a top-six forward it’s always the objective.”
