Hurricanes watch begins with rumour of Rutherford’s demise

In light of the news coming out of Raleigh that long-time Carolina Hurricanes general manager Jim Rutherford could be stepping down or moving up at the end of this season, you can expect there will be lots or rumours around the Staal brothers and Jeff Skinner, not to mention goaltender Cam Ward.

That could add to the intrigue at the June draft in Philadelphia. With talk Vancouver Canucks forward Ryan Kesler was available at the trade deadline and could be back on the market come summer, along with speculation about the future of Senators captain Jason Spezza in Ottawa, there will be lots of interesting names and scenarios in play.

Winds of change with Hurricanes?

The chatter around the Hurricanes is that general manager Jim Rutherford might be entering his final stretch at the helm. Rutherford is close to owner Peter Karmanos, but the Hurricanes haven’t qualified for the playoffs since 2008-09. The 65-year-old Rutherford must assume some of the blame for that drought. Rutherford has been too liberal with his owner’s checkbook.

Could the Hurricanes look to move Cam Ward?

Would the Carolina Hurricanes ever consider trading goalie Cam Ward, who has two years left on his deal ($6.3-million salary-cap hit)? They like Russia’s Anton Khudobin and farmhand Justin Peters gave them good work when rushed into the net with Ward and Khudobin out.

Rumors By Bruce Garrioch ,Ottawa Sun

I’ve been told by a couple of teams that Rutherford is willing to trade anybody with the exception of centre Eric Staal and his brother Jordan Staal. Teams will certainly call about left wing Jeff Skinner, but he is one of the NHL’s top scorers and isn’t going anywhere.

LEAFS ACQUIRE D GLEASON FROM HURRICANES FOR LILES, PROSPECT

The Toronto Maple Leafs have shored up their defence, acquiring Tim Gleason from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for defenceman John-Michael Liles and prospect blueliner Dennis Robertson.

The trade is pending a call to the National Hockey League.

Report: Rutherford working phones, wants changes in Carolina

It appears the Carolina Hurricanes are nearing their breaking point.

Or, at the very least, GM Jim Rutherford is.

Looking to snap his team out of its current funk — the ‘Canes have lost five straight and eight of nine – Rutherford is reportedly working the phones and looking to make changes, according to the Raleigh News & Observer:

Peters plays his way into goalie conversation, here or elsewhere

Peters has played so well, the Hurricanes now face some difficult decisions. Having too many goalies is a good problem to have, but it’s still a problem that needs to be solved. Ward isn’t going anywhere, while Khudobin and Peters both have contracts that expire after the season. As important as Peters has been to the Hurricanes recently, he has more value as a trade asset than Khudobin, who has taken nine weeks – and counting – to recover from an ankle injury.

Edmonton Oilers engaging in trade talk with Carolina Hurricanes about goaltending help

The Carolina Hurricanes could be ready to make room in their crowded crease.

The talk Saturday was that Carolina GM Jim Rutherford has been calling around to see what kind of market there is for goalie Justin Peters. The Hurricanes also have netminders Cam Ward and Anton Khudobin.

RUMOURS DU JOUR

Rutherford has been busy. Unlike some other GMs, he hasn’t sent out an e-mail to indicate all of his players are available and hung the dreaded ‘For Sale’ sign, but the talk is you can have pretty much have anybody on the Carolina roster with the exception of C Eric Staal, C Jordan Staal, LW Jeff Skinner or G Cam Ward. The Hurricanes are pushing for a playoff spot in the East, but Rutherford would like to make changes.

Hurricanes looking for shakeup

The Carolina Hurricanes are scouring the market and are looking to make a major move to help their chances of making the playoffs this season.

Hurricanes Rumors: Trade Talks Turning Into A Circus

By virtue of the title, trade rumors usually turn into soap operas.

When it comes to the rumors surrounding the Carolina Hurricanes recently, it has been a complete farce. Every report seems to indicate the Hurricanes throwing players at whatever team happens to answer the phone and getting hung up on. There’s the Tim Gleason for John-Michael Liles rumors that have been going on for weeks now. In addition, there’s rumors with Tuomo Ruutu and Jiri Tlusty.
