Something Bruin? – B’s reaching out to Alfredsson
For Ottawa’s hockey fans it is downright unfathomable to consider Daniel Alfredsson wearing any other jersey than the Senators’, but Boston Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli isn’t letting that get in the way of trying to make it a reality.
TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun of ESPN reported today that Chiarelli – a former Senators executive himself – reached out to Alfredsson’s camp and spoke with them “at great length” in hopes of luring the pending agent to Boston for the coming season.

Sens and Ducks talking to the Ducks about Ryan
The Senators aren’t alone in their pursuit, but they may be one of the few teams with the assets to make a deal happen. The talk is the Ducks would like to get a defencemen in return if they are going to move Ryan.
“He’s the guy everybody wants,” said a league executive Thursday.

He hasn’t had any luck.
The Senators GM confirmed Tuesday he’s attempted to get into the top 10 of Sunday’s NHL entry draft at Prudential Center in New Jersey, but right now it looks like the club will have to be content with selecting 17th overall.

The month of June is going to be a very important one for the Senators.
Owner Eugene Melnyk has to decide if and by how much he is going to increase his team’s hockey budget. If the verdict is as it should be, GM Bryan Murray has to figure out how he’s going to gamble the extra cash.
And yes, both the free agency period that begins in July and any trade for a much-needed scoring winger is a huge gamble — especially for the Senators, who unlike the New York Rangers and Toronto Maple Leafs, are a small market team that depends largely on scouting and wise choices for their success.
A popular opinion is that, because offers for free agents are once again going to be outrageous, swinging a trade is the best route for Murray to take. And of course a guy like Anaheim’s Bobby Ryan is an enticing option. He’s only 26 and is a four-time, 30-plus goal scorer.
Skating with a playmaker like Jason Spezza, he could get 50.
But along with the $5.1-million salary cap hit for the next two years, what’s he going to cost the Senators? As my friend Bruce likes to say, they’re not going to give him away.
The Ducks, who once built a Stanley Cup winner around a strong defence, would probably ask for Jared Cowen. Murray, who was beaten by that Anaheim team, would have to say no to that.

War of words heating up, Paul MacLean labeled ‘Bug-eyed fat walrus’
Entering the final week of the regular season, many salivated over the prospect of a first-round series between the Montreal Canadiens and Toronto Maple Leafs.
With the potential of Canada’s two most historic teams going head-to-head in a playoff battle for the first time since 1979 — not to mention, the Maple Leafs’ first postseason appearance since 2004 — the series seemed like an ideal first-round matchup.
However, the Canadiens ended up winning the Northeast Division and drew the Eastern Conference’s seventh seed, the Ottawa Senators.

Rumblings: Sens goalie Bishop in play
A source told ESPN.com Monday that the Ottawa Senators have received “several calls” regarding goalie Ben Bishop the past day or so.
The Senators, I don’t think, feel pressed in moving Bishop before Wednesday’s deadline. They’re more than happy to wait until the summer to figure out their three-goalie situation with Bishop, Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner.
Flames and Senators talking trade?
The Senators have an eye toward Cowtown in search for help up front before the deadline.
League sources told the Sun the Senators have shown interest in Calgary Flames left winger Curtis Glencross because GM Bryan Murray would like to get more than a rental player if he does make a move at the deadline.

The Senators GM has been working the phones with the trade deadline set for Wednesday at 3 p.m., but if he does make a move he doesn’t think it will be big.
Murray also remains hopeful centre Jason Spezza will return at some point. He confirmed Spezza likely won’t play during the regular season, but hasn’t been ruled out for the playoffs.

Alfredsson is having as much fun as I’ve ever seen him have around his teammates. His team is winning games and he’s a major reason for their recent success. Ask anyone who has been around this team and they’ll tell you that Alfredsson has been their best forward in the month of March.
This isn’t a 40-year-old passenger; this is a 40-year-old man is who is driving the bus.
NHL trade rumors: Flames like Matt Read, Senators looking for top-six forward
Elliotte Friedman brought up Philadelphia Flyers forward Matt Read in his 30 Thoughts column on Monday. With Read battling back from a rib injury, Friedman wrote about how teams respect the player’s toughness. Given that Philadelphia is looking for help on the back-end, Friedman stated without actually stating that any deal with the Calgary Flames for Jay Bouwmeester would likely include Read, via CBC.ca:
If Philly does any business with Calgary, know that Flames assistant GM John Weisbrod has chased Read for years.
Senators GM Bryan Murray says moving players by trade deadline going to be difficult
The problem is there’s more buyers than sellers. Only the Florida Panthers and Colorado Avalanche are out of the playoff race. There’s other teams hanging on, but they might not be willing to accept the reality they won’t make it.
“I don’t know how you ever get a scorer in the NHL anymore, but if you can get a top-six forward it’s always the objective,” said Murray. “I haven’t identified anybody who is going to be moved.
“There’s only a couple of teams that are going to say today that they’re probably going to trade a couple of kids. (Teams) want to keep the best part of their core and then try to add to it as well. It certainly makes it difficult to make trades.”
