Toronto Maple Leaf News and Rumors
Overall, this was one hell of a game, and I was extremely pleased with the effort the Toronto Maple Leafs put in tonight, both offensively and defensively. The Leafs first line of Antropov, Sundin, and Blake showed chemistry, while the Stajan, Steen, Ponikarovski line also showed some spark.
According to www.sportsnet.ca, Andrew Raycroft will get the nod to start in the home/season opener tonight against cup finalists, The Ottawa Senators.
According to TSN and their sources; which are usually 100% reliable; Off-season acquisition Mark Bell will be reinstated sometime today; meaning that his 15-game suspension will begin counting.
This would mean that Bell is eligible to return on Nov. 6 against Ottawa.
The Leafs have cut goalie Scott Clemmensen, forwards Jiri Tlusty, Tony Salmelainen, Jeremy Williams, Ben Ondrus, Simon Gamache and defenceman Jay Harrison…All but Tlusty MUST clear waivers.
“The Toronto Maple Leafs will make the playoffs and compete for the Stanley Cup”.
This was the grand promise put forth by coach Paul Maurice. While showing such confidence is admirable, the reality of the situation is that the Leafs like last season will be scrambling for one of the final few playoff spots in the Eastern Conference.
The negative reflux from Leaf fans after the embarassing loss to Buffalo has done a great job of hiding the true issue at hand.
This is for the Leafs board. If it is on the main page i am sorry to the anti-Leaf fans, who will take offense for some reason.
So how do you replace a Kyle Wellwood? You can’t, but as the old cliche says, one mans misfortunes is another mans opportunity.
Well, here we go again. There hasn’t even been a regular season NHL game, and the Leafs are facing a serious injury.
According to Finnish website Ilta-sonomat, the Toronto Maple Leafs are close to signing free agent forward Tony Salmelainen.
If you have kept track of the Leafs off-season you will know that they are vastly improved from last year. They improved goaltending and scoring and kept a good blue-line intact. Many would say the Leafs overacheived last year for such a average team when teams with star power and depth like Carolina finished lower. I think that 6th place is a good prediction for the Leafs because injuries will likely show their ugly face once again.
Is there any way JFJ had a good offseason?? Well look at what he did do instead of what he didnt do.
He went out and got a 40 goal scorer which the leafs definitly needed in Jason Blake
He got a better goalie than Raycroft which the fans were begging for in Vesa Toskala
He also got a 3rd/4th liner which has had a couple of 20+ goal seansons in Mark Bell
He even got a replacment backup in Clemmensen which shows in Black and White that Raycroft will be dealt at deadline.
Most Leafs fans right now have been blowing around quite a lot of trade rumors. So I just thought I would conjure up some possible (sensible) trades that John Ferguson Jr. could do (and probably won’t because he’s John Ferguson Jr.)
