Odds are Richards or Marian Gaborik will not be back

Included in that evaluation must be whether John Tortorella is still the right coach for this group or whether his message has gone stale. Brad Richards, a shell of his former All-Star self this season, must also occupy the organizational thoughts. The Rangers have one more amnesty buyout available, and Richards, 32, counts $6.667 million against the annual salary cap through 2020.

Rumblings: Could Kiprusoff go to Toronto?

Interesting news Monday evening with a source confirming to ESPN.com that the Calgary Flames have given permission to the Toronto Maple Leafs to speak to Miikka Kiprusoff’s camp about a contract extension.

My TSN colleague Aaron Ward was first to report the news.

Kiprusoff has one more year on his deal next season, which pays only $1.5 million (although it counts $5.8 million against the salary cap), and the suspicion here is that the 36-year-old netminder would sign off on a trade to Toronto only if he can get another year out of it financially.

GM’s quiet as trade deadline approaches

The trade market isn’t overflowing with top-flight talent that could be available but there are possibilities. Washington’s Mike Ribeiro, who knows the conference after several years with Dallas, tops the list if he doesn’t sign a contract extension.

Dallas center Derek Roy can also become an unrestricted free agent in July but the Stars might hold onto him, especially with three consecutive games against the Ducks beginning Monday night. Toronto seems playoff-bound and could keep Tyler Bozak.

Leafs interested in Keith Yandle, Dmitri Kulikov and Jay Bouwmeester

Meanwhile the Leafs reportedly continue to look at bolstering their top four on the blue line. Names such as Keith Yandle, Dmitri Kulikov and Jay Bouwmeester have been linked to the Leafs in various web reports. Bouwmeester’s $6.6 million US ticket through 2014 seems a bit pricy.

Rumblings: Sens goalie Bishop in play

A source told ESPN.com Monday that the Ottawa Senators have received “several calls” regarding goalie Ben Bishop the past day or so.

The Senators, I don’t think, feel pressed in moving Bishop before Wednesday’s deadline. They’re more than happy to wait until the summer to figure out their three-goalie situation with Bishop, Craig Anderson and Robin Lehner.

St. Louis Blues looking to make changes

The St. Louis Blues haven’t been overjoyed with Swedish centre Patrik Berglund or winger David Perron this season, but they might not investigate trading either player until the summer.

They could move Alexander Steen or rookie Jaden Schwartz to centre for Berglund, who’s a restricted free agent July 1.

I thought Berglund might go for Calgary Flames defenceman Jay Bouwmeester, but if the Blues just got Jordan Leopold from the Buffalo Sabres for two draft picks (they plan on seeing how he’ll look with Kevin Shattenkirk, rather than Wade Redden), that likely means they’re out of the Bouwmeester sweepstakes.

Flames and Senators talking trade?

The Senators have an eye toward Cowtown in search for help up front before the deadline.

League sources told the Sun the Senators have shown interest in Calgary Flames left winger Curtis Glencross because GM Bryan Murray would like to get more than a rental player if he does make a move at the deadline.

Source: Blackhawks trying to acquire Islanders’ Nielsen

A source confirmed to the Daily Herald on Saturday that the Blackhawks and Islanders have been talking multiplayer trade with the centerpiece of the deal being New York center Frans Nielsen.

According to the source, the Hawks are seeking help on defense because they are nervous about going into the playoffs with Johnny Oduya as their fourth defenseman.

Flames who could move at the deadline

Here is a look at a some of the Flames players who could be in the sights of other clubs as the trade deadline looms.
