Bruins explore other options now that Iginla’s gone
With Jarome Iginla now a member of the Pittsburgh Penguins, Bruins general manager Peter Chiarelli is moving on.
He’d still like to add a forward and a defenseman before next week’s trade deadline and he’s pouring through both potential UFA rental players, and deeper investments that would require giving up more in terms of talent and salary.
Bolts getting calls on St. Louis
Whether or not Martin St. Louis would accept a trade out of Tampa Bay remains to be seen, but teams have expressed an interest in the Lightning star.

They can’t afford to trade Nicklas Jensen or Brendan Gaunce or Frank Corrado or this year’s first-round pick. Who they can afford to lose is Luongo.
Boston Bruins would be right up Edmonton Oilers defenceman Ryan Whitney’s alley
Ryan Whitney likes being an Edmonton Oilers defenceman, but if GM Steve Tambellini called him up and said he was going to the Boston Bruins in a trade, I’m sure Whitney’s heart would skip a few beats.
He was born in Boston, went to one of hockey’s better prep factories in Thayer Academy (Jeremy Roenick’s school), attended Boston University, played for the legendary Jack Parker, who just retired. Follows all things Beantown.
This would be the perfect landing spot for Whitney.

With speculation that Iginla could be headed to the Boston Bruins, McKenzie added that defenceman Matt Bartkowski, prospect Alexander Khokhlachev, and a first-round draft pick could be headed to Calgary in return.
Iginla trade just about to happen?
Iginla has been pulled from the lineup for tonights Flames game and Bob McKenzie from TSN is reporting that Jordan Caron and Matt Bartkowski were perhaps on way out.

It wouldn’t be a trade deadline without banter about Ales Hemsky’s availability. A year ago the rumors were put to bed when Hemsky signed a two-year, $10 million extension. Now his name is surfacing, although almost it seems out of habit in media commentary as opposed to actual signs that the Oilers are shopping him.
Could Whitney be a good fit on D for B’s?
Chiarelli told CSNNE.com last weekend that he’s looking for a defenseman as well as a winger to enhance Boston’s roster, and a puck-moving left shot blueliner would be at the top of the list. In a perfect world the defenseman would also serve as the power play quarterback that Tomas Kaberle never was two years ago for Boston on its way to the Stanley Cup.
The perfect name at the top of Boston’s list would be Swiss defenseman Mark Streit, who is entering the final month of his walk year with the New York Islanders as an offensive defenseman. Those within the Isles organization have sent out of the smoke signals that they’re hoping to sign Streit to a contract extension, and they sit only a couple of points out of a playoff spot. Streit has five goals and 16 points along with a minus-14 for the Bruins this season, and six of fellow defenseman Lubomir Visnovsky’s nine points this season have been on the power play.

-Calgary GM Jay Feaster is asking for goaltender Malcolm Subban to be part of any package from Boston. Boston GM Peter Chiarelli flatly refuses to include Subban in any package.

Canucks must move Luongo and close the book on this never ending saga.
What the Canucks do have is one too many No. 1 goalies. They will spend the lead-up to April 3 trying to finally close on the long-anticipated Roberto Luongo trade.
It’s time to shut the book on a saga that has drifted on way too long. If they can’t pull the trigger on a Luongo-for-a-centre deal, consider it a failure for an organization that will have one of its best assets sitting on the bench for every playoff game.
