NHL Rumours: Hurricanes eye Leafs’ Gardiner

The Leafs’ previously kicked the tires of Dallas Stars centre Vernon Fiddler, whom Stars GM Jim Nill said is no longer on the block.
The Isles’ disappointing Pierre-Marc Bouchard hit the waiver wire Monday, but his $2 million price tag might be too steep.

Buffalo could deal Ott, Moulson and Leino

Leino was a healthy scratch Tuesday after loafing through practice Monday. More disturbing than his practice habits was his nonchalance over getting benched. He shrugged his shoulders and wondered aloud what Nolan expected, as if he needed things spelled out for him after going scoreless in his first 18 games

It’s not that difficult to understand. Nolan expects an honest day’s work for an honest day’s pay. He expects leadership from 30-year-old playing his seventh NHL season. He expects a little jam. He expects a goal every once in a while from a so-called top-six forward. Is that really asking for too much from a guy making $4.5 million?

Leafs are active in their trade talks right now

Garth Snow mulls changes as Islanders try to right ship

“We’re looking at all our options,” he told Newsday on Sunday.

“Obviously, we have some key players not performing at a high enough level.

Rangers too comfortable – need to make a change

“This has got to change. We can’t just go through the motions, win a game, lose a game, and hope [other teams] do something for us, and life is good,” Brad Richards said after the Blueshirts pleaded Nolo Contendere against the Caps and neophyte netminder Philipp Grubauer.

“You dig yourself into these situations, sometimes it’s going to take some time or it’s going to take something to get you out of it,” the alternate captain said. “We’re going to have to get a little uncomfortable here and get out of our comfort zone.

Here’s a clue as to why the Dmitry Kulikov deal with Avs might have fallen through…

As noted by Ottawa Sun uber columnist Bruce Garrioch today – and this is something I’d heard as well – it’s possible that the reason why a deal fell through to bring Kulikov to the Avs is because of his contract status and the KHL. There is word that Kulikov might just take a big offer to go back to the KHL after this season, that he doesn’t love life in the NHL that much. More on that here:

Sens hope to be able to move Anderson

Craig Anderson is doing neither Ottawa nor his country any favors. Last season, Anderson went 12-9-2 with a 1.69 GAA and a .941 save percentage. He was expected to backstop Ottawa into the playoffs this season and contend for an Olympic job with Team USA.

Dater: Avs need more defense but shouldn’t mortgate future to get it

It’s time to seriously look toward the trade market. One media report late last week said the Avs were interested in Florida defenseman Dmitry Kulikov, the 14th player selected in the 2009 draft. He has been awful so far this season with the Panthers, but maybe a change of scenery under Roy’s guidance could get his once-promising career back on track. Still, if the kid can’t even stay in the lineup of the Florida Panthers right now (he was a healthy scratch last week), is this the answer?

Leafs GM Nonis reportedly working phones to find a centre

Not all the talk at the NHL’s board of governors meeting Monday in Pebble Beach will surround the formal agenda.

Trade talk is also on the table.

With only the Buffalo Sabres and Florida Panthers willing to throw in the towel on making the playoffs, three league executives told QMI Agency this week that the chatter has heated up and those discussions will continue when the 30 teams gather.

Helene St. James: Detroit Red Wings should trade Kyle Quincey

A savvy, rangy defenseman is getting closer on the Detroit Red Wings’ horizon, which will afford an opportunity to change the landscape.

Danny DeKeyser is starting a comeback from a separated shoulder suffered Nov. 21, taking to the ice daily and increasing what he does. Realistically, he’s still about two weeks away, but when he is ready, he’ll need to be removed from long-term injured reserve. Right now, that can’t be done without something else happening.

Montreal and Columbus have been talking trade for a number of weeks

Hurricanes Rumors: Trade Talks Turning Into A Circus

By virtue of the title, trade rumors usually turn into soap operas.

When it comes to the rumors surrounding the Carolina Hurricanes recently, it has been a complete farce. Every report seems to indicate the Hurricanes throwing players at whatever team happens to answer the phone and getting hung up on. There’s the Tim Gleason for John-Michael Liles rumors that have been going on for weeks now. In addition, there’s rumors with Tuomo Ruutu and Jiri Tlusty.

Are the Avalanche interested in Florida defenseman Dmitry Kulikov?

According to ace Rogers Sportsnet reporter/podcast host Jeff Marek they are.
Marek, one of the hockey media people I respect a lot, said on the air that his sources are telling him the Avs have interest in Florida Panthers defenseman Dmitry Kulikov, the 14th overall pick by Florida in 2009 – 11 spots behind Matt Duchene.

Is Edmonton Oilers GM Craig MacTavish trying to snag an NHL defenceman?

Edmonton Oilers general manager Craig MacTavish was on his cellphone while his team was skating Thursday morning, and while it could have been his wife telling her hubby to stop for a loaf of bread on the way home, it may have been another GM talking about defencemen.

Certainly, the Oilers could use an NHL veteran back there.

Possible trade options for the Islanders

Given his team’s 2-10-2 skid, there’s room to add just about anywhere, but here are a few names that have been mentioned around the league as trade bait and where, based on conversations with several people across the NHL, the Isles might stand in trade talks:

Trade interest in Kulemin

NHL rumours: Stastny part of Habs’ big deal?

“The Canadiens have been scouting the Avs all year long,” writes Adrain Dater of the Denver Post. “While I don’t believe something ‘major’ is imminent, I do believe Montreal has targeted the Avs for a while now for something. It could be as little as trying to get John Mitchell, or something as big as a package involving Paul Stastny.”

Could the Sabres be looking to trade Ott?

Steve Ott is the only impending unrestricted free agent in the Buffalo Sabres dressing room willing to emphatically state that he’s prepared to wait out the rebuild. Yet the captain has no idea if he’ll be given that chance. “We had some negotiating going back and forth and (former GM) Darcy Regier kind of pulled the plug and said he was going to wait until training camp,” says Ott of some summer discussions. “Then training camp came and nothing was said.”

Trade rumblings

I mentioned last week that the Vancouver Canucks had a conversation with the Washington Capitals about Martin Erat — who has asked for a trade — but the Canucks after some thought decided to pass. Ditto for the Ottawa Senators, who initially showed a bit of interest but ultimately decided Erat wasn’t a fit. …
