The average age of the Leafs’ defencemen Thursday night will be 23.4 years old, meaning GM Lou Lamoriello could be looking for blue-line help in the off-season. So, come July 1, what unrestricted free agents might help the Maple Leafs?

What are the chances the Blackhawks can make a deal with the Canucks for Dan Hamhuis and Radim Vrbata?
There will be a lot of forward thinking at this year’s NHL trade deadline because there is no shortage of wingers and centres available.
But, for the market to shake loose, it seems either Winnipeg Jets captain Andrew Ladd or Boston Bruins scorer Loui Eriksson has to get moved so that the contenders can turn their attention elsewhere.

Don't see why not. Could benefit the player and the team. Go to the minors and try to find his game. https://t.co/ypi8tS51xq

Lots to think about when it comes to deciding on how to handle the Eric Staal situation.
In fact, there are at least four pending UFAs whose price tag might require a first in order to pry them away from their current clubs: Loui Eriksson, Andrew Ladd, Eric Staal and Mikkel Boedker.
Multiple sources report keen interest in the 29-year-old, much of it coming from the Western Conference. Dallas has been dogging the Rangers for weeks. The Blueshirts perhaps would be able to get the Stars’ immensely talented 20-year-old winger Valeri Nichushkin as part of the return package. Such a possibility would surely tempt Rangers general manager Jeff Gorton.
Eight sleeps to the Feb. 29 NHL trade deadline and here’s a thought. With the Oilers now 30th, what could you get for the Oilers first round — potentially No. 1 overall — draft choice between now and the actual lottery draft?
Calgary Flames GM Brad Treliving: He wants badly to be active and is willing to accept he hasn’t got a playoff team this spring. Teams are calling about veteran forward Jiri Hudler, who is an unrestricted free agent, along with defenceman Kris Russell. There was talk the Flames were going to re-sign Russell but the word is the two sides aren’t close to a deal but he could fetch north of $5 million on the open market and Calgary may not pay that out. Some wonder if Treliving will be able to get a goalie at this deadline.

The Canucks will get calls on defenceman Dan Hamhuis now that he’s back from his facial injury. He’d be a nice fit for a team looking to get somebody solid to help them go deep into the playoffs. He’s suggested he wants to stay with the Canucks but is going to have to take a pay cut if that’s going to happen. GM Jim Benning has indicated his roster is about to get younger.
“They were in hard on Jonathan Drouin… There hasn’t been a lot of results on that front, but I don’t think it’s been a lack of (activity).
