The Bruins will have to take measures to re-sign Horton and Rask. They might have to place Savard on long-term injured reserve, which would allow them to exceed the cap by his $4,007,143 annual hit. That might not be enough. The Bruins might have to trim salary.
Bottom-six forwards Rich Peverley ($3.25 million annual hit) and Chris Kelly ($3 million) could be moved to clear space. Peverley is the more likely trade candidate of the two. He had a disappointing season. The versatile forward had 6 goals and 12 assists during the regular season, then 2 goals and no assists in the playoffs.
First, Coburn is a good fit for Edmonton’s needs. He has size (6’5″, 220 pounds), a physical game, skates well, and has some ability to move the puck. He’s primarily a defensive defenceman and plays on both sides of the ice but has a left-handed shot. It’s a mixture that – particularly with a weak free agent crop – the Oilers are going to have trouble finding.
You all know the news by now — the Philadelphia Flyers will use a compliance buyout on goalie Ilya Bryzgalov.
It could be that management already has a plan in place to address the starting goaltending for next season, so don’t be surprised if there’s more to this story soon.
But here are five potential options, for discussion’s sake:
The NHL on Monday moved to close a loophole left in the allegedly airtight collective bargaining agreement by notifying general managers the league would deem re-signing a player following a trade and a subsequent amnesty buyout as circumvention, and thus would not register the contract, The Post has learned.
It is believed the Lightning and Maple Leafs had discussed such a maneuver regarding Vincent Lecavalier, who has seven years and $45 million remaining on his contract, with the buyout thus worth slightly more than $30 million.
Bryan Murray has tried to reach for the top.
He hasn’t had any luck.
The Senators GM confirmed Tuesday he’s attempted to get into the top 10 of Sunday’s NHL entry draft at Prudential Center in New Jersey, but right now it looks like the club will have to be content with selecting 17th overall.
